MomijiHyuga804 she airplanes the lyrics on the screen and once it got to the chorus she was like “hang on, I don’t understand this part.” Then the girl was like, it’s ok we’ll explain it at the end.” She told us to stop air playing before the song ended and then we had this whole debate about it putting out the wrong ideas on Catholics. And some girl was like “yeah, but half the people don’t even care about what the song is about, if it’s a good song then it doesn’t really matter.” Then the bell went.

For anyone wondering, the video is based on actual events that were happening in Russia at the time Hozier made this song. At the time, there were these horrendous attacks that were taking place against members of the LGBTQ community in Russia. There had been an increase in attacks carried out by essentially Neo Nazi gangs against LGBTQ youths. They posed as other LGBTQ youths in chatrooms and message boards to lure 14, 15, 16-year-olds to places where they thought that they would be safe and they attacked them and filmed those attacks and would torture them on camera and post those on social media. As a gay guy I get goosebumps everytime I see or hear this song because it represents how lucky I am to live where and when I do. (I live with my extremely homophobic family so it's not all sunshine and roses but at least I'm not being tortured and have the freedom to leave one day!) Much love to everyone listening to this song!

i'm from a catholic school and a member of a poetry club. The teacher showed this to us and told us to decipher both the lyrics and the music video. It was a bit awkward at first but for people who is into poetry, we should be open for almost everything. I treated this as a new perspective back then. I still love this to this day

People will conveniently use their "religion" to persecute against others. It's been that way since humans started religious beliefs. Most every religion preaches to be a good person, but a lot of bad people like to ignore that.

It's not even about sexuality. Here is a direct quote so stop saying what you think it's about without researching. Lyrically the song is one large metaphor comparing a lover to religion. "Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life." Speaking with The Irish Times, Hozier said about matters of the heart: "I found the experience of falling in love or being in love was a death, a death of everything. You kind of watch yourself die in a wonderful way, and you experience for the briefest moment - if you see yourself for a moment through their eyes - everything you believed about yourself gone. In a death-and-rebirth sense."

It's because every human has a hard coded, genetic primordial fear in their DNA. That is the fear of the unknown. This applies to EVERYTHING that is different from what YOU KNOW based on your perception of reality, and how your unique experiences. This is why I fucking hated highschool. It's litearlly one big circle jerk of jugement. Every one has their group of frinds that are somewhat like them, and if you don't fit in to their "click" you are outcasted by that group and most of the people in it. This even applies to the adult world, which is fucking sad as fuck. You would think most in highschool would grow up, and be like "THAT EXPERIENCE WAS FUCKING AWFUL! Let's be more open to our fellow homosapian." But no, we judge what we don't understand, even if it is subconcious, and not conciously. Looking at this issue down to it's absolute raw, unfiltered core is horribly depressing.

Being born in 1965 I grew up with a grandmother who convinced my parent's that I was going through a phase,when i wasn't out growing the phase i was then ill and needed treatment, when that didnt happen the family said i had a problem that needed fixed. All of this confusion was horrible at a young age. Worse than me just being gay. At 14 I finally had enough and accepted being gay,I embraced it telling my family i had no problems, they had a problem accepting me as who I was a gay teenager who was very ok being myself. My parents finally came around and accepted me as i was. The rest of the family didnt matter to me. My younger brother was my best supporter through it all. Many years latter it has become more accepted by society but still many years to go.

The lyric is a trope of a common criticism of Christianity, not a reflection of the message in the video for it. According to Christianity, you are born with original sin, making you "sick" and god will then punish you for how he created you, unless you follow his commands on how to be forgiven, in other words, according to Christianity, you are born sick, then commanded to be well.

I’m Christian, I feel so terrible for anyone who’s been discriminated for their race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, etc. due to the church. It’s the literal opposite to what we’re supposed to be doing. The Bible says love everyone, including gay people. I don’t know how there’s so many Christians who think they’re better than everyone else and get to condemn people.

@@anamelchior7194 the stupid thing is that the bible doesn't really condemn homosexuality. there's Genesis 9:20-27, Genesis 19:1-11, Leviticus 18:22, 20:13, etc. But these are strictly directed at the sons of israel, descendants of abraham. Most were instructions given by Moses specifically to the hebrew peoples. And a significant part of Christ's legacy was making it so that these rules did not apply to the gentiles, or non-jews. The only occurrences of condemnation for homosexuality in the new testament are 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, 1 Timothy 1:10 and Romans 1:26-27. In these cases, however, they are truly meant to condemn 1. Male Prostitution, 2.Pederasty and 3. The Cult of Isis people really need to learn their fuckin history. it really bothers me how many christians walk around committing countless affronts against their religion. there's nothing about christianity that outlaws homosexuals except an ignorance about which parts of the bible actually apply to you.

s ü n. k i s s ë d, The song comes in two parts: an adoration of Hozier's female lover and an indictment of the church. Hozier begins by singing about an imaginary girlfriend who "giggles at a funeral," and who "knows everybody's disapproval." He regrets not having "worshipped her sooner." Hozier is strongly attracted to this woman, whomever she is. In the next stanza, he claims that "[i]f the heavens ever did speak / she's the last true mouthpiece." He believes that if God exists, He would speak through this woman. And compared to her, he believes church to be a "bleak" place, that spits out "poison" at those who attend, telling them that they were "born sick" in sin. This girl is more desirable than church and, he thinks, a better way to understand the meaning of life.

@usuallyconfused 4 жыл бұрын
@Cátia My honest belief is that God doesn't exist. This doesn't mean I want you or anyone else to change their beliefs but to say that a life without God is empty is flat out incorrect. I have morals, same as anyone and my life is by no means empty. You asked "what is your hope in life?" and although the question was not directed at me, I feel the need to answer it. My hope is that I am able to impact the people in my life in a good way and that in the unlikely event that I ever have children, they inherit a world they want to live in, not a world full of evil like the one my generation inherited. You also said that people " living their best lives depressed anxious suiciding or going down into a spiral of evil." Depression, anxiety, suicidal tendencies are evils in this world, but to imply that living that way was a choice is wrong and evil in itself. I have many friends who struggle with suicidal thoughts, depression, and other mental disorders and I can tell you that it sure as hell wasn't their fault. People who struggle with that do not deserve it in any way shape or form.

You know, the ones where they sentence you to life in prison, or worse simply because of the fact you are gay. Or the ones where 91% of the population nationwide are against gay marriage? Truthfully now, ASSUMING you live in a westernized country you are priveledged enough to be able to live you life without REAL systematic oppression or prosecution, yet it is still something to overdramatize. A few bad seeds doesn't mean you are 'oppressed by the system'. Wake up. (and just incase you start talking about the persecution of the gays and blacks in the USA, take note on the words 'modern society') And Emma Lucas... Yes, that's true. But seriously, of course LGBTQ are going to be up on the list of number of "HATE crimes". That's like saying 'did you know that 1 in 2 racially motivated crimes are against women'. It's sad, and I wish both crimes didn't exist in our society but it's a strange point.

My lover's got humor She's the giggle at a funeral Knows everybody's disapproval I should've worshiped her sooner If the Heavens ever did speak She is the last true mouthpiece Every Sunday's getting more bleak A fresh poison each week "We were born sick", you heard them say it My church offers no absolutes She tells me 'worship in the bedroom' The only heaven I'll be sent to Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it Command me to be well Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life If I'm a pagan of the good times My lover's the sunlight To keep the Goddess on my side She demands a sacrifice To drain the whole sea Get something shiny Something meaty for the main course That's a fine looking high horse What you got in the stable? We've a lot of starving faithful That looks tasty That looks plenty This is hungry work Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life No masters or kings when the ritual begins There is no sweeter innocence than our gentle sin In the madness and soil of that sad earthly scene Only then I am human Only then I am clean Amen, Amen, Amen Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life

This music basically just explained everything wrong with religion. And also the reason why i Dont follow religions. they prohibit things that are unrealistic. Ex: don't sin don't do this and that when it's impossible. i only rest in jesus christ. he does the work through me. I don't have to be good or sinless or follow laws. He died for me and everyone's sins. I quote Ephesians 2:8-9.

10 years ago, this song came out. 10 years ago I was 9. I knew something wasn’t right. I knew I wasn’t normal. I didn’t know what it meant to be gay. Today, I saw hozier live. I sang this song with hundreds of other people. I’m out. I’m no longer forced to be religious. I came into a religion and a relationship with god that is pure. I am loved. Hang in there folks. I am living proof that it gets better.
