A nice piece of equipment I use rarely but when I do I find really useful is my HP 339A Distortion Measurement Set. Built in the 70's this unit has a precision sine wave oscillator and distortion measurement section. One of the things thats really nice is the oscillator and the notch filter are tied together and the notch filter auto-nulls to make measurements really easy to accomplish. Lets take it apart!

That was a nice breakdown video of the Hewlett-Packard 339A Distortion Measurement Set. Some details of construction quality were not mentioned, so a few extra thoughts about HP's fine instrument might be helfpul. The HP 339A (as with all HP T&M equipment) was constructed to very high quality standards, easily at the very top of the industry with regard to product quality and integrity. Few (probably none) electronic instruments commercially available anywhere in the world surpassed HP's product durability, reliability and overall quality during this period. The HP 339A chassis was HP's famous second-iteration, modular, "System II" chassis, a machined, cast-aluminum chassis-rails system for absolute rigidity and structural integrity, as well as ease-of-access for service and component placement. This is a full-module version of the system. The standards in dimension also allowed these instruments to be stacked and modularized without an issue of misalignment. Each screw used in the 339A is stainless-steel "Posi-Driv" type machine screw, designed for maximum quality and strength, and no expansion screws of any type were ever used in the "System II" chassis. This "System II" chassis was a derivative of HP's industry pace-setting universal "System I" chassis system first introduced in 1961. This chassis construction was built to such standards that the instrument was put through a rigorous series of "drop tests" and other strife-testing, along with environmental, altitude and salt-spray tests for durability. Each component circuit board was electro-gold plated, a costly and time-consuming extra measure of detail indigenous to nearly every Hewlett-Packard instrument manufactured during this period from the mid-1960s until nearly the year 2000 (after which some critical instruments continued to be manufactured with this same standard of quality). Gold-plated boards virtually eliminated the oxidation/corrosion issue so much a problem with most commercial products built to a lesser standard. HP took the further step of tropicalizing circuit boards and connectors to withstand high humidity and moisture issues. All components were underrated and 100% incoming-tested for quality assurance, and each component was the highest quality available for the purpose. In short, HP equipment was expensive, but it was built to last a lifetime. Hope this information gives further enlightenment regarding the fine quality of the HP 339A. --Tom Tyson (ARHPG)

You should take hi-res photo of it before putting it back together. I love looking at photos of new and old gear - next best thing after poking into one of these by myself :-)

Hi, my 339A function SW seems not working well. Volts reading is OK. But turn to Distortion functions , the reading seems is out of working. Thanks.
