Permanent solution (without disassembling anything): the same thing happened to me, what I did was wash, without disassembling the calculator, with abundant isopropyl alcohol, that does not damage the electronics, it only cleans it, injecting the liquid through the keys closest to the screen . The problem is that the screen and keyboard contacts are in that area, with accumulated dust and dirt, the contact does not work well. I repaired my calculator yesterday December 02, 2020, at least it worked for me. Good look, thanks for you video.

SIR: you saved my calculator! I had that exact issue. 2 strong rubber bands did the trick. Thank you so much. I was missing my “polonaise inverse” calculation system! Almost opened it but it looks like it is a very delicate surgery . Cheers.

I HAVE 2 48'S I USE AT THE OFFICE. ONE QUIT WORKING SO I WRAPPED A RUBBER BAND AROUND IT SO I WOULD STOP PICKING UP THE BROKEN ONE. AFTER WATCHING THIS VIDEO I ONLY HAD TO DOUBLE UP THE RUBBER BAND I ALL READY HAD PLACED ON IT, AND BAM, BACK IN BUSINESS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING THE VIDEO.

Oh for crying out loud, you're right???!!!! I was the one that got you started using the HP??!!! That shows me how my memory is starting to go??!! I'm pushing 40 you know??!! I picked up another one on E-bay for a real good price. You can do the same when yours finally decides to give out. But at a cost as you mentioned:,....loosing all your data.

Thank you for sharing this video. I’ve been accumulating older HP and TI calculators as a bit of nostalgia and wasting money. I recently bought an HP 22s, which appears to be in perfect condition, but the right column buttons don’t work. Once again I bought something with problems 😖. Luckily I stumbled on to your video and tried the trick. It worked 👍

Thanks! My HP48G have been out of comission for a year - and its only 24'ish years old. I've missed it like an old firend, and now its back =) Amazing what a little bit of pressure in just the right spot can do.

Thanks a LOT, my companion of 20 years is alive! My ON button is lower than the rest, I thought it was damaged when the calculator was stored with all my household stuff for 2 years, but just touching the area above the C button sorts it out, I never thought of that!

There were times when my arithmetic keys didn't work and times when they did work! It almost seemed like the time of day had something to do with it! Resets using the keyboard and the R button didn't help! And, then lo and behold, as suggested by this video, pressing the calculator face below the screen turned on the arithmetic keys. Amazing!

Thank you for the great tip!! I love my HP 48G for everyday calculations and have had it since 1996. Recently the on/off button had stopped working properly, but by applying the pressure to the faceplate as you said, its working again. Thanks and I hope I can get another 26 years out of this calculator. It's the best! Thanks again!

That helped a lot. I've got a stack of 6 48's that didn't work before I saw this. Now it's only 2. I really don't understand the "dislikes." Either you knew this about the 48 or you didn't. If you did, so what? If you didn't, you learned something useful in 2 minutes. Get a grip, dislikers!

Hilarious that mine just started doing this about a few months ago and I started to look for a replacement but they are still $200 + on ebay, this solution solved my issues 100% (I was having the same problem and also with the upper row right most 2 keys). I'm pretty sure I bought this calculator new in 1996. What a beast!

Great Tip! Long years ago I had 48SX & 48GX, both died because of "Keyboard". Were you are pressing there is the Contact between Display and Circuit. It's made by a small piece of Rubberband. Rubber gets harder in time. A Mixture of 50% - Acetic Acid CH3COOH 30-(80)% and Spiritus C2H5OH 100% makes Rubber soft again. I GUESS, only 2 drops of that Mixture between Glas / Metalcover will run onto the Rubber produces acrid fumes and might force the Rubber back in support of its inherent electrical Contacts. Damage is scarcely to be expected because of nearly no Water and no Oil in the Mixture. But I have no HP 48. Perhaps someone likes to test it.

@somarpr 8 жыл бұрын
+VierLinden-hi.de Acid is ionic will damage in the long run the circuit board and the electronics as its conduct electricity. If you can open it and taking the rubber stuff out it may do the trick if you can open it and take the rubber out!

damn youtube, I love you. That totally freaking worked. Now, does anyone have any idea how to fix this permanently (without the ghetto-looking rubber band around my HP 48GX)? This calculator is a work of art and gives me such pleasure using it, but would be diminished with the rubber band. Currently just a slight press in that area cures the problem for a bit. Might just take this in to an electronics repair store... :/
