In this video, I'll cover the HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF and I'll perform a full teardown + re-assembly of the machine. Once complete, I'll do some benchmarking and gaming to test the GeForce 1050Ti that came with it.
In the video, I will first completely disassemble the machine, then re-assemble it and install a few upgrades. Once the machine is back together, I'll run some benchmarks with Geekbench and we will check how it performs in Microsoft Flight Simulator and GTA V.
You can use this video if you want to replace your CPU, RAM, SSD, video card or anything else.
My EliteDesk 800 G3 has an Intel i7 7700, a Nvidia 1050 Ti, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM and a 256GB NVMe SSD.

Hello... What a great video! It's very instructive. But, i'm wondering, would it possible to replace the stock heatsink with either Cryorig C7 or Noctua L9i? Both have a backplate that must be installed on the back side of the motherboard..
@jensdbe
@jensdbe 3 жыл бұрын
I think that the only option for such heatsink would be to remove or to bend down the lifted mounts on the bottom of the case. As you can see at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pJd1h8Rk0rCcZX0.html These would prevent you from mounting that backplate or the board would end up too high. Keep in mind as well that the case is limited in height so you might want to check if your heatsink+fan would fit in the limited space.

Can you use this EliteDesk model to run VMs, and do out-of-band management? What upgrades do I need to make for these to work? Or which micro server is ideal for these capabilities?
@jensdbe
@jensdbe 2 жыл бұрын
The specs allow it to run a bunch of VMs, depending a bit on your needs and how resource-hungry they will be. Out-of-band management is not so easy. You could install a second network card but if the host-OS is down, you would still not be able to reach it. The approach I have for a regular PC which I used as a NAS is to have it connected to a smartplug (which I can remotely enable/disable) and set the BIOS to always boot after power loss. Thay way, in case the machine is locked up, I can at least remotely reboot it :)

The EliteDesk 800 G3 has only a 180W power supply. The most consuming graphical card it comes with from the factory is a GT730, which takes around 40W. A 1050 Ti takes around 75W so that should be within the safety margin. A 1070 on the other hand easily does the double (~150W) so that's really too much for that PSU. You would also miss the 6/8 pin connector that such GPU needs. Upgrading the PSU won't be an easy task as well I'm afraid.

Bet you've already answered this somewhere but here is where i am in a pickle. I have a G3 800 SFF currently running without a GPU. I checked the specs on the GTX1650 LP and on a stock system that doesn't go with the specs. First, the PCIe slot is limited to only 35W supply to the graphics card while the GTX 1650 pulls a whopping 75W at max draw. Second - Now somehow even if you end up installing and getting it to work and definitely not at full potential of the GPU, youre still gonna need to upgrade your power supply so it can handle the load of the GPU at even 75% of the full power. And i am talking about the SFF in the video. Same problem with the 1050ti. The only cards that go in safe limits are the GT1030 and the GT 730 unless you get another PSU which supports higher Wattage output (you might need to swap out the case too) and then run a full sized card instead which draws power directly from the PSU instead of relying on the power from the PCIe slot.
@jensdbe
@jensdbe 9 ай бұрын
Upgrading the power supply will not increase the power that the PCIe slot can deliver. Also for cards that do have an external power connector, they count on drawing up to 75W from the PCIe card as far as I know. I do see that it is documented to have a maximum of 35W supported for the PCIe slot but as this one was doing fine with the 1050Ti, I would expect a 1650 to work fine as well. Wouldn't be the first time that I try this with success. 180W in total should be fine for GPU, CPU and the rest of the components like mobo/RAM and SSD.

To each drive you will need power and data. Power comes from the black connector on the motherboard (with red/yellow/black wires), data needs to be connected to the blue SATA ports on the motherboard. If you don't have enough power connectors, you can easily split that. For additional SATA ports, you can install an extra controller in one of the PCIe slots.

Hey man great video, planning on using this as a base of a raid server with parts from other old cheap computers Would you reckon with some sata power splitters, sata data splitters, another 2.5/3.5 drive cage, I could chuck 4x 2.5 ssd's in the front? Plus use a raid pcie card with m.2 cards? Also with it being an LGA1151 socket and the i7-8700 from another PC i plan to scrap parts from, would the i7-8700 work in this with a bios update?

Make sure the power supply can support all the disks which you want to put in there. For the CPU, I don't think 8th generation is supported. You can find the supported CPUs over here (page 10): www8.hp.com/h20195/V2/GetPDF.aspx/c05378305

This is just part of the CPU architecture, not really something that needs to be explicitly enabled. You can check the current CPU speed in Task Manager for example. Try and run something heavy and check the variation clock speed to verify.

I guess the easiest would be to get a bracket that allows you to put your 2,5" drive. Some of them exactly match the size of a 3,5" drive. I used one of these to upgrade my Mac Pro 4,1: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jNiSocmKzM2tmZ8.html

It's definitely intended for being put horizontally (no stands on the sides) and it feels sturdy/strong enough to handle a proper weight. A classic CRT might not be the best idea but even a decent sized LCD should be fine to my idea.

@jensdbe
@jensdbe Жыл бұрын
In the standard case, you need a specific HP PSU as a standard form factor does not physically fit. In another case, it should work to use another PSU but you would need a convertor from the standard ATX to the HP-proprietary connector. All in all, if you plan these kind of things, it might be more interesting to sell the whole PC and buy another in the tower version (or a custom PC)

The most consuming graphical card it comes with from the factory is a GT730, which takes around 40W. A 1050 Ti takes around 75W so that should be within the safety margin.

As far as I know, a 1060 needs at least one additional power plug. You might be able to supply enough with a convertor from regular moles to 6-pin. A 1050 Ti, like I had in it, doesn't require this.

Hello, very good video. A few weeks ago I got this same equipment, I am happy with it, it is fast and fluid. I bought it with an i5 6600, 16Gb RAM. I have been seeing some comments about which GPU would be ideal with this equipment, but my concern is that the maximum consumption that the PCIE x16 port allows is 35 watts. Now, according to your criteria, which GPU would be the ideal? Taking into account that the PSU is an 80 Plus Platinum 180 watts. Some GPUs have been recommended to me but they exceed the permissible limit of watts allowed by PCIE. Have a nice day.

@@jensdbe in simmilar pc it was some lenovo sff with i5 4570 also with 35w limit on the pciex and it was deffinately throttling the gpu, it was low profile gtx 1050 non ti 2gb. I tested the same cpu +gpu + ram combo inside desktop pc with haswell motherboard, difference was huge atleast 30& less fps with the sff, it was easy to visually notice the throttling. After that i tried to lower the cpu power draw, disabled the turbo and thtrottled cpu to 2.5ghz speed with the multiplier, results were the same, it wasnt problem with the psu as the sff system was drawing max 100-120w under load, yet the desktor was drawing 150+ watts so there it was the measured difference 20-30 watts and propably the reason was gpu not getting enough juice. But it worked without any problems, just crippled gpu performance.

It's very hard to find a 1060 or 1060Ti in low profile that would fit. Also power demand would be an issue I think. A conventional PSU will not fit. the PSU and connectors on the motherboard are fully customised. If you're looking for this kind of upgrade, I guess selling the PC and getting something else as a base would be the easiest :)

You’re better off buying an HTPC case that will accommodate the components. Just to give you an idea, you’ll need to map out a layout for a riser and stand-off to mount the GPU horizontally. As far as the PSU, you would need to cut out an upper or lower portion of the case to allow for dimensions which can be covered with a fabricated tray. The real problem is the dimensions again which leaves ITX as the only solution. So now if you don’t have a rear I/O knockout, you’ll need to create an access for your new shield. Finally your new board will need to be wired to the front I/O. You can buy header connectors, and trace the pin out to splice and join the two. The PSU will be the hardest, and to keep a cleaner look you’ll have to install elevated feet so that the recessed tray doesn’t ruin the aesthetics.
