Here it is a quick and easy way to improve the temperatures of the HP RTX 3080, I recently noticed that the temperatures and especially the one of the memory has started to reach 110C, which is way too high and decided to do repasting and replacing the thermal pads with higher quality ones.
Please use 1MM thermal pads for the memory chips!
1.5MM for the VRM

Hi, I got a refurbished omen w/ 3080 and I’m liking it so far. The GPU reaches a max of 70°C when playing just Diablo 2 Resurrected for now. Probably not the most demanding game but I want to play some elden ring. I noticed the card is very dusty though so I will clean it when I get a chance and reference this video if I have heat issues down the road. Thanks!

Thanks Ivan. Coffee is on its way ;-) Could you please list the thickness of the pads and the according components in the comments? That would help me figure out which thickness goes exactly where. I´ve got 1mm on the VRAM and an 0,5mm on the other side of the pcb module. But where does the 1,5mm goes? A picture with text of the thickness would be very appreciated. It will be my first gpu modding there I want to have it done by first try (and do not want to reopen the graphic card several times). Thanks

An last (but not least...) how much pads do I roughly need from each size? Do not want to buy too much or too less (and do not want to invest too much money, because I could then better had invest that in another card instead). Thanks again

I bought a used alienware 3080 two fan model off of ebay for $450 that was used for mining two weeks ago and the guy must have done this mod because when I got it my vram temps were around 80c and the core was around 80c. I undervolted it to 812 millivolts at 1755 mhz, set a custom fan curve, and the core now runs around 70c, so 10c cooler although the vram is still at 80c which is fine and lost very little performance, not enough to notice. So now the fans don't go over 50% and it's quiet and not too hot. It should last several years like this and I'm glad there are videos like this for when I need to repad and repaste it.

@@HardwareSense I planned to buy a 3080 for months after ethereum mining died waiting to strike when the prices were at their lowest but I got real lucky that the 3080 was pre-modded. These are really hot cards but it's under control and I'm keeping a hawk eye on the temps. I had gotten a new 3060 ti in January 2021 for $620 that took 8 days to find anything that wasn't a 3090 in stock. I'm glad those days are over. I'm giving the 3060 ti to my 80 year old mom to replace her r9 290x.

Love this one and the last one....but question..... Is the high 90s temp on the hot spot and memory still ok? At some point, is it fair to say that the ventilation in these Omen cases are just horrible? At least on the 30L. I run 112c on the memory junction temp and high 90s on hotspot, currently. I get a ton of stuttering and frame drops when the temperature is pick up. I watched your first video on this card months ago, and have wanted to do this mod, but I'm still under warranty. HP wants me to send the entire machine back, but do you think HP will even look at the memory and hotspot temps? Will they even repad/repaste? I don't want to waste time with HP if they're not going to fix it, but I also am very hesitant about trying it myself and voiding the warranty 😏

It gets too hot if you get stutters and frame drops, that means that the base clock is lowered by the card due to thermal throttling Send it back to HP and have it replaced.

Let see i did the previous mod but I bought some 1mm pads that were way too hard and it was getting to insane temps.then I bought some softer pads and it's better VRAM temps but overall 10c higher temps

Does it have to be thermal pads. Or if you are really good with it can you just use a thick application of thermal paste instead.

Is this with stock voltages? I have to undervolt mine to 1650mhz at 725mv and the fans still ramp up to 100% and temps go to 84 with hotspot of 104c. If I leave it at stock it just thermal throttles to around 1600mhz anyway. I think I'm going to have to do this mod.

Hello sir, thank for the video. For my case i had changed my thermal paste Arctic mx6 + pads for nothing the fan are very noisy @ 60% speed (Corsair 7000D airflow case don't help)😢 . Hello! I just got 2 of these rtx 3080’s by hp for cheap because HP hardly applied any thermal paste and they would crash under load. After repasting it I can run furmark and games in general without it crashing but the hotspot is 20c+ higher than the normal temp and reaching around 95-105c. After power limiting, undervolting, and cranking the fan curve I got it to a max of 95c but I’d like to give this to my friend and he doesn’t really know how to do this. Would replacing the thermal pads really help? My vram temps are alright but I’d like to knock that hotspot temp down.

Even after all the experiments I did on this card, the hot spot remains the hottest, the memory initially was super high, but after the thermal pads and all dropped 20c, but the hot spot reaches 100c, I think the overall execution of the whole cooling solution was not well engineered.

Perhaps a little late to this video, I just got an HP OEM 3080, and as far as I can tell I have pretty good temps on everything and the card runs nice and quiet, its less than a year old and my case has good airflow. I dont have any way of immediately getting thermal pads as I have to order and wait, but do you think its worth swapping out only the thermal paste and applying it around the vapor chamber as you did, or should I do thermal pads as well?

I think dumping more heat from the video memory into the heat sink and thermal mass of the card should also mean there is less potential for heat transfer from the GPU Die as well. Q=m*C*(deltaT)
@HardwareSense
@HardwareSense Жыл бұрын
There is a lot of truth about that, but still the temps are well balanced between the GPU, memory and hot spot.

Wonder if I should do it. Using FurMark at stock, I'm getting 74C gpu, 92C memory and 103C hot spot. But the fan goes to near 3000 rpm. I'm hoping to reduce the noise in my build. (I'm reusing this GPU in a custom build mini itx)

I opened the cooler and just replaced the thermal paste plus paste to the metal to vapour chamber. It's now super quiet. Gpu and memory is the same, but hotspot is now down to 97C and fans are way lower at 2000rpm. Turns out stock thermal paste was horribly applied. Half of my gpu didn't have any thermal paste contact. This why there's a big hotspot temp difference. GPU boosts to 1965 MHz, 2000 RPM fans (very silent) and 75C core, 90C mem, 97C hotspot. Totally happy with my card now.

@@HardwareSense yeah that's why I didn't suggest a custom 3080 as it was near impossible even if you set alerts believe me I tried. But as far as cyberpower prebuilts(including other prebuilt brands too) it was the easiest way to get a 3080 and wasn't THAT hard as they didn't nearly sell out as fast. I got my cyberpower a few hours after the sale started(during near the peak of 3080 prices) and I was still able to buy! HP 3080 is better then no 3080 you're right.
