I agree with Hoosier Hardware that HP's decisions to make everything on this system so proprietary have rendered it not worth upgrading. Sadly, I went this route a couple years ago because it was the PC that I could afford and I thought it would be a good foundation for a future upgrade. I'll list all the details of what I did below, so you don't have to... Or, at least, know what you're in for if you want to upgrade one of these systems. If I had to do it over again, I would just build a new PC at this point. During Best Buy's Black Friday sale in 2019, I picked up an HP TP01-0034 (Intel Core i7-8700 with a 256 SSD) for $479. I planned to upgrade the video card, but sat on the sidelines until the crypto craze came to an end and GPU prices came down to 'normal' levels. At that point, I knew the 180W PSU wouldn't drive any of the relatively current GPUs. So, I scoured the internet and found there are two (proprietary) HP PSUs that could be bought for inflated prices when compared to standard PSUs. The options are the 400W PSU (L04618-800) and the 500W PSU (L05757-800). Both can be ordered from HP at partsurfer.hp.com or from other resellers. I went with the 500W PSU (~$150 shipped vs $105 shipped for the 400W PSU). Installation of the PSU was plug and play. Next up was the video card. I ordered a GIGABYTE Eagle OC GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8GB as it is a 'shorter' length card with only 2 fans. The card barely fits in the case. However, HP's absurd board design places one of the two 4-pin power supply cables for the motherboard nearly directly in line with the video card. When both are plugged in, the plug obstructs the video card from fitting straight in the slot and pushes the card on an angle that I was not comfortable with leaving that way. I ended up de-pinning the plug and cutting down the plastic connector to no longer come in contact with the video card housing. I re-pinned the cable and wrapped the wires (separately and then together) with electrical tape to keep them directed away from the GPU. WARNING: If you are not knowledgeable with working with electronics that store electricity, do not try de-pinning a PSU. The case now has the needed power and a more current GPU. It runs current games smoothly and with good frame rates; however, this highlighted the next problem with this PC. Airflow. It has none. That is a requirement with modern GPUs. They need good airflow. This case doesn't have it. And, as other's have commented about HP's production of e-waste, this is another example; this PC's motherboard only has a single fan header and no place to mount a second case fan. At this point, I'm either going to get creative with the case and find a way to retrofit the case to support a 2 fan setup that run off of a single 3 pin fan header (and free up the air intake) or I'm just going to build a new system and carry over the components that are worth keeping. If you have one of these systems and are thinking of upgrading it, you now have more information of what will be involved. Good luck and happy gaming!

I got a hp pavilion TP01-2000na I just wanted to make it be able to play a few games, nothing bang up to date, just maybe some of my 360 era titles in better quality and higher fps, would somthing like a gtx 960 or gtx 1060 (i dont think they require power supply) with some added RAM be plug and play ?
@markm.3740
@markm.3740 Жыл бұрын
@Cal McAuley Both of those look to be drawing 120W max, which I wouldn't think leaves enough power for the rest of the system. You might get equal performance from a more modern card that has a lower power draw.

Gotta remember these weren't made as gaming systems but home desktop systems. I picked up the i5 11400 variant and it's pretty nice to use as a normal workstation. Sure they're upgradable but most end users won't ever perform an upgrade. At most I see end users upgrade to dual channel ram instead of the single channel they ship with.

There really is no excuse for their anti consumer business practices. They contribute to pigeon holed hardware replacement to hp or equally overpriced 3rd party resellers as well as increased E-waste. I usually dodge hp because of these practices, but there was the hp tp01 1023w on clearance at Walmart for $249. I snagged it with expectations to make a plex server or gift it to my nephew to game on. Of coarse my nephew wanted and received it. It was no issue slapping his pcie powered 1050 ti into it, but because of hp proprietary shenanigans he is pretty much topped out. I plan to gift him my 1070 ti, but now I have to find an adapter to use with an aftermarket PSU for my old GPU.

Somebody who only needs a general purpose computer would save money and get a better build quality if they got a used core i series system or even core 2 quad system. But yeah I understand most wouldn’t know how to perform upgrades to those systems either. You save a lot of money being a computer geek 😅
@ChrisWMF
@ChrisWMF 12 күн бұрын
You can get an atx adapter for these now for like 10 bucks. Also my opinion is they just wanted to be cheap. Strip down all the extra bells and whistles from a normal motherboard and power supply and they save some money on both. They have engineers who would do that to justify their existence.

Buy a sfx psu, the 4pins plugs are 2x 4pins cpu. Jump the green and black cable on the ATX 24pins cable. For the proprietary plug leave it disconnected. My psu screwed only 2 of the 4 screws and I might have to drill holes under the case for airflow.

Buddy, I have a few questions, you mentioned that it comes with an Unbalanced Pair of Memory Sticks. You didn't mention if this affects Dual Channel Memory Performance? I assume a must upgrade is to replace one of the memory sticks to 4/4 or 8/8 and make it balanced and that will improve memory performance? Just for fun can you actually test to see if it really truly 'boots' with a no6pin video card? Never assume. Maybe the HP motherboard bios has something that prevents booting. We need to know if it boots fine with an RX560 and a 1050ti. Is it plug n play? Its not a gaming pc so its kinda normal for Dell and HP and Lenovo to cripple the motherboard. I assume tho that with time the aftermarket community in ASIA will create the Power Supply Adapters necessary for the motherboard but then you will still need a Wheel Cutter to cut out the back of the case abit. The integrated graphics on that cpu is pretty decent its not too far behind a 1030. Passmark shows 2128, wheras a 1030 passmark score is 2620. Which should be more than enough for Indies Games and GOG Games. Of course please take into account thats raw performance. The 1030 will pull ahead even more because of its 2gb of ddr5 plus if the game is optimized for invidia drivers than you get a boost there as well. I just checked Microcenter, Westmont IL Theres over 25 brand new gt1030 ddr5 2gb in stock for $105 plus tax Pickup the pavilion, pickup a replacement ram stick, and pickup a 1030 and that should hold u over for a good long while. Dont assume video cards are coming back anytime soon. They mite never ever come back. Thanks for the video buddy.

i bought an acer n50 nitro pc with a r5 3500 about 978$ cdn and it was the cheapest to get a somewhat decent gpu for my rig , put my 1050 in my son's pc to replace his 1030 i paid too much for. i also switched his R3 3100 for the R5 3500.i have put all the remaining parts in the acer pc and my youngest daughter asked me to have it ....... so, Buying prebuilt for the gpu didnt work as expected. and now my other daughter is like i want one too so i'm not out of the woods just yet lol . the acer pc also has some proprietary connectors for sata and psu, the cooler is also with screws not in standard configuration and the dvd drive( yes they still exist lol) also has some proprietary cabling pluging in a dock to slide the "laptop looking" dvd drive in. it has a 1tb hdd and the mb has a m.2 slot but i have to remove the hdd bay and the dvd drive bay since both cover the system where the m.2 slot is . i bought the original prebuilt at a nearby staples store . it seems to suffer from the same 1 8gb stick disease as mostly all prebuilt i've seen so far. now i have a all black generic gtx1650 4gb gddr5 with a big sticker saying " don't touch " on the gpu fan that even gpu-z cannot identify who built it with the lookup button lol XD. it's looks is almost like buying a chinese card knockoff from aliexpress lol

as a PC technician who sales off-lease rigs to clients, due to it being eco-friendly. I only sell HP, Dell, Lenovo rigs to users who aren't power users. So simple office use, or web browsing or Facebook kinda tasks. Since usually the off-lease rigs I offer to clients are dead end systems and usually proprietary parts inside. If a client doesn't want off-lease then I'll go to a local SI for a new build, however, in my years of dealing with clients, I've only had to sell a brand new rig like 2x. The rest I've sold to users on a budget..and they aren't gamers. I don't have any gamer clients, since for the most part gamers, work their rigs harder than a web browsing rig or media center rig. Usually also, gamers know what they are doing with their build "usually". I know there are those who are newbs in the DIY rig building space, so have to factor that also. My own rigs have been either build by my own hands, or a local SI. I haven't gone to an SI since 2008, since I like the feeling of accomplishment after building a rig :)

Pavilions are those machines you only buy if a) It's on a murderously good sale and b) you have no intention of ever upgrading it. I bought one about five-ish or so years ago. It was an i5-8400 with 16GB of RAM, 128GB SSD and 1TB HD. But like every Pavilion, it has that gimped, non-standard 180W PSU, a proprietary motherboard and a case that can only easily use those motherboards. Outside of doubling the RAM and eventually installing Linux, I didn't touch a thing. I could edit and render 1080p video comfortably and 4K if I didn't like myself that day and didn't want to use proxy clips. Still being used today -- I passed it along to my mother. Works like a champ for what she uses it for. That said, I never recommend HP pre-builts purely because of the proprietary dead-end nature of any individual model. Pity, because they generally aren't garbage build quality...you just can't grow the machine with you. Ironically, the garbage build quality gaming PCs are actually more useful long term.
This $69 Gaming PC is INCREDIBLE
