When it comes to convertible 15-inch laptops there aren't many choices, but one of the more popular ones is HP's Spectre x360. There is now a 4K OLED option for sale right now, but it has some trade-offs compared to the non-OLED 4K model like less powerful CPU and GPU. That's a downer, but at the price now lets you get a really impressive laptop for not a lot of money. But has HP maybe become TOO fancy with these new gem-cut designs? Let's find out.

Thanks for the lovely review. The comparison between varying specs of the same model is a superb concept - Kudos! Meanwhile, the one trade-off that I do wish would happen is switching out that not-so-relevant micro-SD card reader for a 4G LTE support option. However, I do acknowledge that the Windows support for this function is sub-par, especially given the observation that every other new update essentially kills the LTE support function. To be honest, though, that wouldn't be a deal breaker for me - I absolutely love the performance of the 45W H processor and the dedicated GPU.

That's why I like smartphones! They saw that accidental touches would be an issue, and never worked towards getting rid of bezels. In fact, they expanded side bezels! ...wait a second.

Another thing I like about top and bottom bezels is, the bottom one can allow the screen to be higher up which offers a better viewing experience, and the top one makes it more top-bottom symmetric.

I'm pretty pleased with it. I purchased it about 2 days ago. I was going to go with the surface book 2, but the price to get the specs made me go with this.

I changed my mind and took it back. I now have the envy x360. It was half the price and I am very pleased so far. Specs are the same except it is 8 GB instead of 16. Finger scanner works better as well. Honestly it seems more responsive compared to the spectre, but they are both great.

I have a last gen Spectre x360 with the AMD Vega chip. I love the design. The bezels don't bother me. If they could change anything, maybe make the screen 16x10 to stretch it out height wise. Also, i can't live without a num pad so I'll always look at HPs as long as they keep that feature! I do want the new Gem cut models. Maybe I'll upgrade next year...

I am typing this comment on a week old HP Spectre x360 15" with the OLED display and Nvidia MX250 I picked up over the holiday. I went with the better display route because it comes with Thunderbolt ports, so if I ever need the extra GPU power I can hook up to an external graphic card and go from there. Right now I can't afford a fancy external graphic card but I can still run it with an old cheap slower external card but with output to multiple external monitors, and run the laptop with 2 external monitors + 1 OLED, whiling running the faster of the two GPU (MX250 in my case) to do all the heavy lifting.

Is this a good laptop for an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student? I have not used SolidWorks too much, but I also use MATLAB. But I don't use them too heavily, but may start using them medium-amount in the next two years. Right they are on offer at $1,100. I like it because I believe I could do both take notes and use Solidworks, and it seems to have good durability. But I would love to get your opinion, thank you!

I bought the 2020 model of the HP Spectre X360 15-inch notebook (convertible) as an upgrade to my HP Spectre 13 bought in 2016. I have been impressed with the new design although I replaced the supplied 1 TB NVMe M.2 32 GB Optane with a Samsung 970 EVO NVMe M.2 SSD. Installing Artix Linux was straight forward; slowly documenting the post base installation and configuration during the next week. By the way, the 4K UHD AMOLED display is nothing short of amazing.

Does HP's warranty cover any OLED screen burn? My last two Samsung phones including the one I am currently using has had screen burns. What concerns me is that HP is using Samsung's OLED screens but Samsung isn't using their own screens on any of their laptops.

The bezel at the top is for the IR windows hello camera. I dont see how you dont mention that when the other manufacturers left it out for the thin bezel design. I have the last gen model and it works perfectly. I love using windows hello

Lenovo S940 has some of the thinnest bezels on the market including the TOP bezel. It has Windows Hello IR. Everyone is solving this problem: Dell, Lenovo, even Razer. HP can do it, but it's also the Wi-Fi antenna and not just the camera here that is causing these thick bezels.

I feel that a lot of the reviews on you tube are made from the books or they just copy each others opinions, in specs it looks awesome, but I got the2019, gtx 1050ti, i7 and it isn't as smooth as I was expecting it to be, and the thermals can get really intense. On the other hand I really don't mind the touch pad, I LOVE the fact that its got thicker basils because given that its a convertible it helps avoid the accidental screen touches and I think the stylus that comes in the box is really bad, very slow response to it, don't know if its the device or the software, and with that being mentioned I strongly believe hp should work harder on the drivers and the soft aspects in general.

A big pro for OLED displays is they’re sharp and the image is gorgeous. But, the big con is that static images will burn-in, especially bright red ones. I have an OLED TV, I love it. But, it’s fairly easy to avoid static images on a TV. I just don’t see a way to avoid them on a computer. I’ve also had a Samsung tablet with an OLED display for about 4 years and burn-in is now noticeable when the screen is projecting a gray scale image. I don’t notice it being annoying, yet, but it’s there. I have a suspicion that people are going to be disappointed about this OLED vulnerability on their computer screens.

Samsung have put a huge amount of time and resources into this panel to prevent OLED burn in issues. The even stopped making OLED laptop screens for a while so they could concentrate on getting it right. Obviously only time will tell but from what I've heard they have pretty much resolved the problem.

Well, the main drawback for me using the 15.6" is the unavailibility of a cd/dvd rom. As many supported device driver CD s that i had became useless and i had to look for the driver softwares online

I have absolutely no need for thinner bezels! Why is that a thing? If I want thin bezels I'll pick up my smartphone, but on my laptop I'd prefer the best possible Wi-Fi reception, and something that prevents accidental touches when in tablet mode. I think this design is stellar!

HP needs to upgrade to the newer i7-9750H and nvidia GTX 1650, but for some reason they are sticking with ULV cpus at least here in Canada for now, shame. I'd consider the new XPS 15 but reports from users on reddit show it is still throttling even at low temperatures.

Honestly, I prefer the HP Keyboards (key travel and full island size keyboard (not chiclet)), compared to Dell XPS 15. So that's another factor apart from all the fancy specs, keyboard is really important especially if you're into programming/coding etc.

I bought the new dell and I love it. You only hear the negative comments on reddit. The laptop only throttles under a CPU and GPU load, it will not throttle under CPU only loads. (I haven’t experimented with undervolting yet)

@@sammorgan8765 while some throttling is expected, from some reddit posts, the frame rate drop was rather significant going to single digits, not acceptable. I could see them dropping a bit, but no so much. It's rather simple, there is no thermal room in the current XPS design. Maybe Dell is waiting for 10nm before redesigning the XPS 15. That's gonna be awhile.

You can get the Spectre with an i7-9750H (6 cores) and a GTX 1650 4gb with an AMOLED screen.

@@micah9462 Oh is a minor update recently then, but it doesn't change the fact that the bottom is nearly impossible to open for maintenance and the RAM is limited to 16GB only

Has anyone with this hp x360 computer been successful installing a new SSD? I have tried Samsung and Western Digital SSDs. Neither of them will show up in the BIOS or even diskpart. I think HP terminates the port for non-HP serviceable SSDs.

Hi In March 2019 i bought the HP Spectre x360 15”. In the first 2 years I’ve had it, the screen has been replaced 3 times. The lighting on the screen is awful at the best of times. If I’m looking at a predominantly white background (ms word or excel), the lighting is very uneven and ends up giving me eye strain. The screen has been replaced because of these dark vertical lines that keep appearing - starting from the bottom of the screen. I have a 3 year guarantee on the machine, and HP have offered to either replace the laptop with something else or give me back my money. I like the overall build of the x360 however. My question is, does anybody know of the 2021 version has ironed out tie screen problems (the problems I’ve had are apparently known design faults)?

I have this laptop and while there is mostly good, the trackpad is not very accurate and the fans are constantly on. For some reason, the fans turn on immediately when plugged in and the device/charger can get very hot. Speakers can get tinny when on almost max volume. Display is great, speed is great for editing photo/video, battery life is also decent. Hoping this will last me another 7 years like my old MacBook Pro did.

@@xalmak changing the battery settings to "better battery" reduces the frequency of the fan coming on but I still haven't found a solution for when the laptop is plugged in

@@rahmamarei7203 now that I'm out of college, I don't use it as much, but it seems they have fixed the fan problem when plugged in. However, now the opposite has happened where the fans don't come on as often when it's using a lot of processing power. It's never turned off or anything due to that, but I'd be aware of that. Its totally good for browsing the web but I recommend looking at other options if you ever get into more intensive things.

Anything with a processor preferably at least a 6 score. And at least 16GB of ram, but the more the better with After Effects. A Dedicated graphics card could come in handy because AE does have some instances where you can use hardware acceleration. Lastly a SSD, preferably an M.2 SSD. Limit your searches to these 3 things and anything you find will be good for you.

@@arvinchen2610 It used to run hot even if I don't do anything heavy. Then after I did some bios updates, it's very solid. I really love it now.

Both are very similar and high quality laptops but HP's design won me over. If it helps, I've had no issues with the trackpad either.

@@rahmamarei7203 Hey, I've used it during my freshman year of college; mostly using word, PowerPoint and sometimes times screen o matic. It does all of those smoothly. The fans wake up when you do alot at once like split screen, writing papers, watching youtube, music playing and what not. Not too loud but you notice it. Battery life is good, and I use 4k live wallpapers! However if you're just gonna write papers and browse the Internet, save your money and buy a chromebook lol. Don't get me wrong I love this laptop, it performs very well and it looks amazing; but your paying for the 2-in-1 feature, the 4k screen and the pen. I admittedly don't use the tablet that much and really just bought it cause I usually just want higher end stuff lol. However, i have been playing around with Davinci Resolve and it seems to keep up alright. So your good. Just DON'T EXPECT ANY GAMING. Lol that didn't work for me. Bottom line: If you wanna splurge go head, if you wanna make a smart financial decision, just buy a chromebook IF your JUST going to use docs, shop, and watch KZfaq. Hope you enjoyed my extremely detailed review! Lol

Im just watching that display wobble while your doing the review.....Typing with a screen thats shaking from every button press is just a deal breaker, I agree about the design, its tacky and not offering much. 4K in a 15 inch? Nobody needs that or the resource drain that comes with it....

I hate OLED, is true that is the most colored display, and better resolution and contrast, but after some time all displays starts to have color burns and there's no way to stop,

Burn ins were a problem some time ago but controlled pixel shifting prevents color burn ins. This is pretty much the standard now.

@@rainerrain9689 wait forget everything I said. I updated the bios through hp support assistant app and now the fan's completely quiet (unless running extremely heavy tasks ofc, but the moment I stop, the fan turns off) :). Ok HP's redeemed! :)
