1 thing i like about the HP Stream series of laptops is a full 8+ hrs of battery life, but when updating Windows, run disk cleanup, you'll probably need to plug in the power adapter. thats from running a 2016, 2019 models. a Dell inspiron the same screen size has great battery life if it has a SSD.

Yeah I really appreciate you doing those live streams because there's nothing more beneficial than seeing something in the wild. Even getting to experience your frustrations with it, was they telling experience about what the consumer of a low end Windows app might need to deal with.

The information about the display and its limitations is good to know. It seems like you've had a bit of a rough time with the initial setup due to Windows 11's update process, but it's good to hear that once everything is up to date, the performance becomes more acceptable for basic tasks. I was particularly interested in the gaming performance. It's not surprising that this laptop isn't a gaming powerhouse, but it's good to know that older games and game streaming seem to be viable options. However, the throttling issues you mentioned during the 3D Mark stress test and the overall lagginess on Windows 11 are definitely concerning. The fact that Linux runs smoothly on this device is intriguing and might be something I'd consider if I were to get this laptop. Overall, it sounds like the HP Stream 11 has potential, but it's currently held back by Windows 11's performance on low-end hardware. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with us. Your review has been quite insightful.

Thank you for such a thorough review! I purchased this specifically to complete my certifications online. I didn’t need bells & wistles. I just need something that was compact and can get the job done! I’m coming from a MacBook Pro 16 which was rather cumbersome. I sold it a month ago. I plan to get an Air, but I’m not completely sure. So, I decided I wouldn’t rush this time (I purchased that MacBook randomly while I was in Best Buy and I regret it now) I didn’t want to waste my money again. I’m excited for this little guy to come in the Mail! 😊

I find it funny how Windows devices in this price range, or even up to around $400-$500 with USB-C are Data only, when LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE CHROMEBOOK with USB-C is ALWAYS Full service-- USB-C Power Delivery, Data signaling (5Gbps on most, one or two up to 10Gbps) and Displayport Alt Mode, so can do USB-C to HDMI or Displayport out, max resolution depends on the chip. Also Lon, how do these fair over longer term use? You mention it has 30GB of free space after the 3 hours of updates, but with roughly every quarter, or half year of updates, WIndows generally keeps the old WIndows files on the device, so for the average Joe who doesn't know to run a disk cleanup or something to remove old Windows files after the update goes well, 64GB eMMC isn't enough for the C drive that is soldered on, no? microSD can expand the personal storage, but it can't be used for boot, can it? Almost feel like the $25-$30 for a 128GB microSD is better served to save and get a device that has that already on it.

Yeah this is a major problem in the smartphone space especially. Even in the Android space, 90% of the videos are about the five or six most expensive phones available. Even though only 10% of the public uses those phones. Of course the bigger problem is probably that the reviews are so tainted by an endless push for constant consumption.

Got the HPStream 11 second-hand for GBP 110 (133.31 USD), from CEX. Small and usable, matches its Pavilion 15 big brother. Bought a cheap Windows Retail product key Upgrade to "Windows 11 Pro" GBP 5.99 (7.26 USD) from Electronic First FZ LLE, no problems, fast upgrade install, no long updates. Battery life fine, still under OEM warranty until December 2023, works OK, but some graphics glitches running Chrome browser. I am fond of retro software - MS Office 97 works brilliantly (+ lightning fast!) on the small screen, well, Winword and Excel, anyway, were made for small screens 26 years ago, and apart from the help32 files being disabled, create documents indistinguishable when printed. May get a Windows 10 Pro Retail product key for GBP 4.99 (6.05 USD) If there are future problems.

I have a i7 2600, 8GB, GTX1650 which I have kept going so hoping the get something out of this little laptop. One idea I have is to by a small laptop fan base. I had one on a old Dell D400 which cooled it down by 10c. Will see what happens.

To add, now received. Took about 1.5hr to update and a few reboots. Booting up takes seconds. Removed S mode. Best game which runs is far cry 2. There is thermal throttling. Soon as CPU hits 60 degrees it struggles. Some games had to be uninstalled. May invest in a notebook cooler. Going to see if I can run games off a SD next as there are a few more I want to try but currently only have 4GB space free. Uninstall quit a few pieces of software I did not want. 365 was using 5GB of space. Just OS along you are looking at 15GB so about 45GB space to play with. Overall. Very impressed. Build quality is ok.

Third input. Cooler helps whilst gaming. With cooler fan stand max temp under heavy usage 65 degrees. Without its 73 degrees. 8 degrees decrease makes a different for gaming. @vgamesx1
@vgamesx1 2 жыл бұрын
@@brandonchutt312 No it's certainly more than that, a type C controller alone can cost $2 or more, although in bulk at 1000s of units it is a lot closer to $1 + a few of supporting components and of course at standard markup that would make a device around $3-5 more expensive.
@vgamesx1
@vgamesx1 2 жыл бұрын
@@brandonchutt312 Go have a look on mouser or lcsc then, they all sell chips at roughly the same price and you can only get something for so cheap, you might be able to talk them down to another few cents, but nobody is going to take a loss or merely break even simply because you're willing to buy a 100k to a million of it... Also, I gave a fairly generous estimate, if you look around a bit there are plenty of far more expensive type C controllers that cost $3 or more even in large qualities, so $1 was actually on the cheaper side.

I have the previous year's version of the HP Stream 11 which looks identical to this one but is running Windows 10. I intended to buy it for occasional use, but there are a few issues that prevent me from using the Stream 11 on a more frequent basis. 1. Maybe it's just my laptop, but I find the trackpad to be awful. Two-finger vertical scrolling and two-finger right-click actions barely register, even if I increase the trackpad's sensitivity. I have to use an mouse with this laptop in order to use the laptop at all. 2. The screen only tilts back maybe 45 degrees. I almost broke it when I first used it. 3. The battery seems to lose its charge when the laptop sits powered off for a few days. If I charge the laptop to 100 percent and I don't turn it on for a week, it'll have maybe 84% battery life remaining when I turn it on. I also encountered this behavior on my previous HP ProBook 430 laptop that was running Windows 7, but none of my other laptops have done this over the years, including my current Acer Windows and ChromeOS laptops. 4. When I bought the Stream 11, I knew that it had a TN display, but over time I've become increasingly dissatisfied with it. I would never buy a computer with a TN display in the future. Contrast and viewing angles leave much to be desired and I have to crank up the brightness to the second highest setting, which kills the battery life. 220 nits is just not enough.

The mandatory web installation and updates is a good idea because imaged hard disks from the factory are SO out of date, and most new owners skip the updates for a long time. Also better to get 3 hours of installation out of the way so the laptop will run at "full" speed on Edge. I just watch Netflix on my iPad and push buttons on the low end laptops as required. Oh - I did finally UN-cheapen my approach to Windows and buy an i7 Surface and was shocked how un-painful the update process was with an i7 and a real SSD. I think rather than blame HP, or even MSFT, we should really blame Intel for giving us such crap Celerons ,while for the last decade Apple has been overtaking them on ARM chips culminating in the introduction of the M1. My old Stream 11 is more of a turtle than my Mediatek ARM powered HP 11a Chromebook. BUT Windows has SUCH a longer support life than ChromeOS. Google needs to start committing to supporting ChromeOS for 8 years not just 6 which only creates mountains of e-waste.

Apple makes money by controlling it's users. Intel makes money by selling hardware. It's not entirely Intel's fault that their hardware is sometimes not very price-competitive with the hardware subsidized by a local monopoly.
@erzascralet48

ChromeOS DOES support 8 years of updates from any device that launched in 2020-- The ARM powered device you got (8183 I think) was launched on Chromebooks in 2020 with the Lenovo Duet first (first as the Helio P60T, then 8183, now rebranded THIRD time as Kompanio 500) and that device gets updates through June 2028. I don't mind this approach, as the performance has an expiration and it's transparent of a good, supported experience. Yes, WIndows is supported longer, generally, but they don't really test it with generations old processors and the experience makes you want to get a new device anyways. With Windows 11, if you have a 7th Generation Intel chip (Celeron or i7, doesn't matter) that released late 2016, early 2017, it CANNOT update to Windows 11, and Windows 10 ends support itself October 2025. So Chrome is in the same 8 year ballpark as Windows now for support.
@mdubb4855
@mdubb4855 2 жыл бұрын
@@erzascralet48 Google has a very limiting rule on the 8 support cycle. It starts with the sale or maybe with FCC approval of the first Chromebook or tablet using that chip. So the first to market starts the clock, even though it may not be in stores yet, and even though other makers may not use the chip yet.

Is that full download of Win 11 going to happen on any newly activated machine? I can see the updates happening, that's fine. But a full download and install of Win 11 seems absurd.

Microsoft ought to update the minimum system requirements of Windows 11 for OEMs to this [BASIC] CPU: quad-core processor of at least 2Ghz RAM: 8GB of RAM GPU, a DX12 capable graphics chip STORAGE 128GB SSD/HDD DISPLAY: 1366x768 IPS [CERTIFIED PREMIUM] CPU: a 6 core processor with at least 3GHz of performance RAM: 16GB (dual channel) GPU: A DX12 (12.1) capable graphics chip with at least 4GB of VRAM STORAGE 512GB SSD DISPLAY: 1920X1080p IPS any manufacturer that makes this kind of junk is ought to be ashamed of themselves

Pity the specs are so low, Win 11 needs at least 8gb to run decently. A few more frills for an extra $100 and could have a winner.

I had no idea these things were still being made lol. They're barely able to handle Windows software. 11 inch models are really more meant for Chrome OS software.

I'd say it's working as intended. Windows never worked well with Atom cores, because they're so weak that half of the CPU is tied up with information harvesting, while the other half runs the OS itself.
@WhenDoesTheVideoActuallyStart

Maybe the new 1c/6t Alder Lake parts will run it better? One big core not being burdened by the OS would go a loooong way to make it responsive.

I don't like these low end computers because you eventually runout of harddisk space updating windows over the years. Had one of these 2 years ago.

Windows on lower end hardware has always been garbage, hardware like this really needs to come with a lightweight Linux distro like Solus, or Mint DE pre installed by default.

People like to state that Linux fixes everything, but it would be almost as bad on Linux, the eMMC storage (or 5400rpm drives) is what drags all these netbooks down into garbage tier devices, it's basically an sdcard and if you recall it's sorta usable, but Linux doesn't exactly run great on something like a RBpi with an sdcard either, unless you get rid of the gui and use it headless, it certainly helps, but you're just polishing a turd, whereas if the eMMC was replaced with a proper sata SSD then a low-end atom/celeron and 4GB of ram is perfectly usable on either OS and honestly at $250 there's no excuse for OEMs to be cheaping out on type of storage.
