25 years ago, the bloody war in the Balkans ended with the withdrawal of Serbian troops from Kosovo. The conflict between the Orthodox Serbs and the Muslim Albanians who inhabited Kosovo ended only after 78 days of NATO bombing of Serbia.
The war between the Yugoslav army and the Kosovo rebels left 13,000 dead, most of them civilians. The insurgents, demanding independence, attacked the police and the military, who instead staged ethnic cleansing in Albanian villages, turning them into widows' settlements, killing most of the men and boys there.
Although Kosovo, which is not recognized by Ukraine today, is no different from any other peaceful country in Europe, its streets are filled with people who still bear the scars of war. Not all criminals have been punished, and the investigation of war crimes is still ongoing. hromadske traveled to Kosovo to talk to survivors of the 1998-1999 war on how to live afterwards.
