HS2 won't be high speed between Manchester and Birmingham

HS2 will start at Euston rather than Old Oak Common - but between Birmingham and Manchester it will not be high speed, Sky News understands.
The rail line will stop in Manchester, but from Birmingham it will switch to use existing West Coast Mainline track.
It will therefore not be high speed after Birmingham - effectively confirming days of speculation that the northern leg of the controversial project has been shelved.

If it’s the toss up between a slow, but reliable, train service, or an unreliable service that has one fast line between London and Birmingham, I’d rather have the slow, but reliable service. 100 billion should be enough to provide reliable train services across the whole country, with enough spare change to build 50 new hospitals, and solve the housing crisis.

This is awful. Noody wanted HS2, millions of acres of forest and countryside ripped to shreds for £100b...those scumbags in charge of HS2 should be made accountable, those companies who are building it and ripping taxpayers off should be named and shamed. There is no reason HS2 should cost anywhere near that when other, much larger countries have done it for less. 🤬

I can only imagine how much that land is worth now to some shady character from the compulsory purchase scheme involved with hs2.. Maybe the land will become a second home "palace" to an mp or two or maybe an mp or two could make a few million on the side like, ya know, mp's privilege.

What about the millions of acres of forest and countryside taken in the Mototway building programme - that's OK of course because the Road Lobbey gets what it wants and spend what it wants - no one ever questions the cost. Scrapping HS2 is the most shortsighted decision taken by this administration. Lets hope the Government keeps the land it has purchased and protects the HS2 route as a rail corridor for when we come to our senses and decide to build it after all.

So many people are focusing on this 15-20 minutes improvement in journey times, but that would not have been the main benefit for people in the north. Railways are tightly coupled systems, this means that congestion in one part of the network can have an effect on rail travel throughout the whole network even parts that are 100s of miles away. This is the main problem HS2 would have helped solve - by moving many express trains to a new line, this would have increased capacity, and reduced congestion on the existing infrastructure in the north. So even by doing nothing else, the completion of HS2 would have automatically improved rail travel for all of us in the north of the country.

It would save an hour from Manchester so London to Manchester in one hour would have been good , people keep saying 15 mins 🤷 yes saving 15 to birmingham only, the trains from Birmingham to London are awful as it stands rickety cattle wagon type trains it will be a big improvement, of the trains were better people would drive less too

Stick with them. They made a brave decision today and there will be more to come. Hs2 was a labour project that the conservatives had to deal with. The north are going to get upgrades to bus and local rail services so it's not a complete loss

They should have spent the money on local transport options. Upgrade the third-rate train services that already exist in the North. Get more buses and light railways/trams up and running. Work on automating parts of the rail network to kneecap the unions. Plenty of options and it seems the government has taken the wrong one at every turn.

Should never have been started once they realised it would not be possible to connect it to St Pancras and the euro-tunnel. Whose going to pay more to get from Birmingham to London 10 minutes quicker? Travel from Birmingham or Manchester direct Paris/Brussels or Amsterdam would have been much more attractive.

This plan was thought up by British Rail in the 1980's but was not considered pheasable, the line now being constructed by HS2ltd would never or was not planned to go to London St Pancras and Europe as there is no call for trains from Birmingham and Manchester to go to Paris when there are perfectly good Airports at Birmingham and Manchester, HS2 is just a part of the WCML to allow faster trains from the North and Birmingham to London only

I am very much in shock as I am from Bangladesh which was ruled by British from 200 years. They have made 2600 km of railway till 1947. It is so well constructed some are used even now... It's a shame the country was so well ahead of it's time gave up the lead and now have fallen so behind...who would Imagine their railway track looks like that in the video and struggling to make a line.... Seems like they were just busy building castles....and now sending money somewhere else

The HS2 line is being constructed from the Delter Junction at Water Orton just out side of Birmingham as far as Lichfield as part of Phase 1 where it will connect onto the existing WCML for trains to travel to Manchester and the North

UK projects suffer from rule following and pandering. People compare HS2 with other countries rail systems but what they should look at is how they built them. In the UK I have seen report s of a HGV overturning, the holdups can last days whilst inspections are done and reports are written, this can delay many thousands of peoples time and money I passed a tanker than had gone off the road through a barrier and was on it's side. the road was open, 3 hours later an my return journey the tanker had gone, the next day the barrier had been fixed, not the UK obviously, I was in Spain.

Curious! Rishi has now stated the northern section of HS2 to Manchester has been cancelled. The money is to be spent on a range of regional transport improvements and national pot holes. However, there is no money currently available to build the HS2 extension or urgent NHS improvements or staff salaries. So his promises to redirect the funds leave the question....When will all these new proposal take place ...in 50 years time? Finishing the HS2 to bankrupt Birmingham will take years and in any case will stretch government funding over years, so cancelling this project would not release funds for years.
