Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish, Alvin Ailey School Dance teacher and former Alvin Ailey dancer, began experiencing hip pain while teaching a class. The pain increased and began to interfere with her teaching ability. She was referred by a fellow dance teacher to see an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip pain at Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Edwin Su understood how important dance was to Elizabeth and decided a total hip replacement would be her best option. Now Elizabeth is back in the game, dancing and teaching in time for a new performance season, with special thanks to Dr. Su.

Thank you so much for posting this. I've been crying every day thinking I would have to give up dancing after my hip surgery. Dancing is my life and seeing this makes me think I won't have to give it up. This video means so much. 10 days until surgery and hearing everything will be fine wasn't enough. Seeing this however changes so much.

Thank you very much for sharing this experience. I am a dancer, acrobat and bboy too, I am 38 years old and I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis due to congenital dysplasia. In November I had surgery on my left hip, the pain was completely gone. Now I'm about to have surgery on my right hip, but since the surgery I feel a big difference and I'm sure I can dance again. When all this is over I will also share my experience since for someone who moves these types of traumatic processes are devastating not only physically but psychologically as well. To those who are going through the same thing do not lose hope. Greetings from Argentina

I am three weeks post-op THR { ant} performed at HSS. Day-one I was walking. I have already walked about five miles without any pain to the incision site. I am using a cane for stability; however, I don't need it. The service provided to me was nothing less than outstanding. I went in walking in an angle with my knee locking on every other movement and came out standing tall, walking upright and no obvious knee issues.

@@MrIrrepressible, I cannot even tell I had a hip replacement. It’s been since October 2018. Feels like the hip I was born with. I even had a full scoliosis spinal fusion November 2019. I was hoping my leg discrepancy was gonna be more even after my spine was done, but I still have one leg slightly longer than the other. I wear a little lift thing in my left shoe to bring my left leg more even to my right. My back is actually better too, and I’m so happy that my hip was done, and all healed before that major surgery. The hip surgery took just over and hour. The spine surgery was 12 hours. 🙄

What's going wrong with your THR, Stacie? I recommend a Facebook group called Total Hip Replacement News, where you can ask questions of those of us who've also had problems. It's a great group that's not covertly run by device companies. You might also get checked (via a blood test) for allergies to the metals used in joint replacements. If you're allergic to nickel (as 1/4 to 1/5th of the US population is), one of the metals used to make the "cobalt chromium" alloy used in so many medical devices, your body's reaction to the alloy will cause big problems, necrosis, implant loosening and other problems that seem vague and systemic, but are a direct result of the nickel hypersensitivity. Your family doctor can order the test from a group in Europe called MELISA, but if you're in the US, it might be easier to use the test done by a company in Chicago called Orthopedic Analysis. A skin patch test isn't sensitive enough to detect the problem. You'd need what's called a lymphocyte transformation test, and to my knowledge only Orthopedic Analysis and MELISA do it. You get your doctor to order it, then you go to a local lab. You can find out more about the actual test and how to get your blood sample to the companies on either company's website. Sometimes, if your tissue dies in response to the underlying allergy (called a Type IV hypersensitive reaction), infection has a nice place to settle (in the necrotic tissue) and then later the doctor will diagnose you as having an "infection," when the infection is actually secondary to the dead tissue, caused by the implant. This can also happen, even if you're not allergic to anything, but have a cobalt chromium alloy. Cobalt is a neurotoxin, cardiotoxin and soft tissue destroyer and since the mid-1990s this cobalt-chromium-nickel-molybdenum alloy has been used about half of THR devices. A way to tell if there are toxic levels of cobalt and chromium in your blood is to ask your family doctor to order you a "serum cobalt" and a "serum chromium" test. These are two blood tests that your insurance should cover. The OA and MELISA tests your insurance probably won't cover, and your orthopedic surgeon will tell you allergies to metals are "exceedingly rare," because that's what the device companies tell all the surgeons, though I believe that's absolutely false information.

@@ALV-gs1xg I'm so glad to hear that! I too have one friend who's had a Birmingham for about a decade, and he's doing great, aside from developing polymyalgia rheumatica. He plays tennis and feels no problems from his BHR, but is aware of the potential for cobalt toxicity, so he knows for what symptoms to look and has his family doctor order serum cobalt and serum chromium testing twice annually, as well as ordering a 24-hour urine cobalt screening for him once a year. I wasn't as lucky, when I had my two cobalt-chromium metal-on-metal THRs. Mine weren't the Birmingham, but they were of the same design (a cobalt alloy head, articulating against a cobalt alloy socket liner). I hope you're playing lots of tennis and never have to get revision. @@FrancesScottFurryandFree I am sorry to hear about your issues. I am aware that non BHR hip resurfacing has been very problematic. I don't play tennis. It's a great game but very hard on joints. I practiced martial arts for many years. I'm absolutely certain that's why I required bilateral BHR. I was told post surgery NOT to practice any "impact" sports. I still practice martial arts but avoid full contact or bag work. Although I had my surgery here in the US, I wasn't concerned with FDA practices. I was more concerned with its long history in the UK and with Smith and Nephew over there. The data was very impressive and I also know many individuals in the UK with success stories. Nothing will ever be as good as "human hips" but I'm very happy with BHR. I think BHR is now the only FDA approved resurfacing in the US. Best of luck to you!

This Video suggests: ”No problem, we can fix you!" For me, the absolute wrong approach or attempt! Our Body is designed for certain MOVEMENTS and ABILITIES. If it hurts, give it the NECESSARY time to heal. The ability to fix itself is for the most part already given! - Why overdo? Why exaggerate? - I love DANCING myself. EVEN ballet! - Side note. If not mistaken: every 3rd Ballerinas get hip issues to some degree till hip-REPLACEMENTS, in their early-mid 20s. WHY? - On the other hand, this Video also shows exactly what to AVOID!
