HSV GTSR W1 Maloo review: $1 million LS9 Aussie ute!

I'm a bogan at heart. But the day spent fanging one of four 2017 HSV GTSR W1 Maloo utes around was pretty much one of the best days of my motoring career. This is arguably the pinnacle of Australian engineering and I'm so glad to have been given the opportunity to have a drive.
This exact car sold at auction a couple of weeks before we collected it for $1,050,000, it's literally worth more than most new Ferraris. And, you've got the chance to win it! It's being raffled off - watch the video for details on how to enter.
In the meantime though, Paul Maric devours a bunch of LS9 goodness in the HSV GTSR W1 Maloo ute!

Take the engine out and sell it by itself. The car itself is poorly made. A million dollar car with halogen globes. Omg please!. They treated their customers with contempt. Good riddance. The day they closed, the government breathed a sigh of relief. Such a blight on the country. , they were leaching on the patriots.

This is one reason why Holden was my favorite GM subsidiary and why I was so disappointed to see it cancelled. We were lucky to get a few to trickle through the US as Chevys and Pontiacs but never in this body style. And my God, that engine just sounds amazing. Cheers to whomever wins this beast.

Paul, Love your work and I loved this review of a great ute. A magnificent and historically significant car, no doubt at all. Being such a small run and specialised vehicle I don't know if it deserves "pinnacle of Australian engineering". It was used for a very short time, came from 'Murica (NOT Oz) and sold to an elite selected few. Hardly qualifies it as an Aussie's aspirational car. For this and a swipe at the title of "pinnacle" I think the more deserving Aussie is the Barra Turbo Six. The final incarnation in 370Kws showed what a mass produced FULLY Australian chunk of engineering could really be - for Joe average! Thanks for the great work Paul - keep it up! (P.S: Fancy lumbering a ute with dangerous rain tyres as standard. A set of Michelin PS4s or Pirelli PZeros would have been much more appropriate and appreciated and given damn near as much fun in the dry and now slid of the road when it rained!)

Hi Paul. I understood that the 4 W1 utes were taken off the overall sedan build, so 271 Aussie W1 sedans. Then you have the press car on top of that which was meant to be crushed but ended up being sold. But I didn't know GM made an extra batch for Australia, I thought the story goes that HSV scrounged around to find 300 LS9's from warehouses etc. But if you look online, LS9 crate engines are for sale so GM must still be making them, all confusing to me.

I don’t reckon it’s simply the headlight tech that’s the sole contributing factor to headlight performance. The size of the headlamp housing and reflector plays a role. My VFII redline Ute had headlights which are as good as many LED and XENON units. I put that down to the large size of the lighting housing and projector format.

I wouldn’t pay $1 for that interior. Beautiful engine. Nice aggressive exterior… that’s where the good bits end, but they’re probably the most important ones.

They said in the video that this was number 4 of 4. Generally number 1 of a limited edition run is the most valuable, but in this case, number 4 would be the last HSV/Holden ever made. If that's the case, they auctioned off the wrong car!

in hindsight whatever the automotive companys wanted as a subsidy from the government would be well worth it for all the expertise and engineering skills gained by manufacturers and subsidiaries in this country, the last holden was a really good piece of automotive engineering particularly with those L v8s from gm usa

also why did you leave that car cover in the tray to bounce around like that, irrespective of how the raffle people presented the car to you, put that bag in the passenger compartment. it's a collectable piece. i don't know man, you kinda didn't pay this car justice with this video in my opinion. Still though, thumbs up for the fact that you got your hands onto it.

We used to have the Chevrolet Lumina in South Africa, it was basically our version of the Commodore. Unfortunately they were discontinued in 2013. I always wanted the sedan version, but buying a second hand V8 in SA is not a smart thing to do.
