Went other way. I knew the price and I came to see it get trashed. It's a good headset and not bad for the price. Aimed at business and VR lovers. You've gotta really love VR at this price point. I've spent that and more on a single one. I own pretty much every non Vive headset. In fact, I've never owned one ever. Got a reverb G2 sitting brand new unused lol. I'd probably change lovers to obsessed lol.

I'm still rocking my HTC Vive from 2015. I've upgraded the lenses with the "gear VR mod" from fresnel to smooth, added prescription lenses from VR Optician on top of that (courtesy of a special 3D-printed mount from Etsy that supports both sets of lenses), the Vive Wireless mod, the "deluxe audio" headstrap, and I've fastened a pair of batteries on the curved back of the headstrap with Scotch Fasteners (basically super velcro) so that the entire thing, batteries and all, is contained on my head. The whole thing is heavy, but balanced, so it feels much less restrictive than the weight alone would suggest. And now that I've gone wireless from the PC, I can't go back. My Frankenstein is still the only combination that I've seen that is (1) wireless and (2) natively supports the Steam store out of the box (specifically Sairento and Half-Life: Alyx). I want the Index, but it isn't wireless. The Quest 2 looks great, but it doesn't natively support the Steam store. So for now I'm stuck with my Frankenstein headset.
@syrsly273
@syrsly273 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of games on the Steam store are ironically Rift only, and if you use a Vive, you can't 'natively' play those games. However, if you use Virtual Desktop to play SteamVR with your Quest 2, it's completely wireless and acts like a Rift on Rift games and like a Vive on other games. It's the most convenient, comfortable, and inexpensive solution. I say this as I regularly use my Vive and Vive Pro Eye and only use the Quest 2 every few weeks at most. In my case, the Quest 2 is simply too small for my face/head. I want to get a better strap for the Quest 2 and try using Index controllers with it soon.
@amdreallyfast
@amdreallyfast 2 жыл бұрын
@@syrsly273 I'll try looking into that. Thanks for the idea. I'm just concerned about the processing power required by games that assume a wired connection. Can the Quest 2 handle that?

The only companies that get enough advertisement to sell their VR to people who dont game are facebook and sony (oculus and PSVR) every other vr product is pretty much advertised within the vr or gamer community only. As @Sofian said, the Focus 3 isn't gimping the XR2 SoC like the Quest 2 is, and it also has more power going to the fan that is cooling it off. These use the battery faster. The issues/limitations of the design mentioned in this video definitely prove it isn't intended for consumer use, even more than the high price does.

@djprogramer973
@djprogramer973 2 жыл бұрын
It's BEEN showing it at a pathetic level. They don't even try to copy each other anymore. The HTC Vive made sense, the inside out tracking was a win but everything else about the Oculus has always been the appeal. Facebook is some how still on top while being one of the worst supporters for it. You get a well made headset with hidden unwanted features, then you have this steaming pile in the corner. It's honestly bringing me to tears. The market is toxic at this point, the consumers are fine but the competition is close to none existing. It would've been fine if any other company could've competed but HTC has failed beyond belief.
@djprogramer973

@@notlNSIGHT I understand that but unlike with something like consoles no other competing headset is able to stay in the loop. "I don't like the Quest, what are my other options?" "Crappy and no support" The market used to be Oculus Vs Vive and even though it kind of still is it's not as lively as it used to be. Metaphor: A game where one person wins all of the time is a game that no one wants to play and eventually it's no longer as engaging. A flat market might as well be a dead market. The PSVR is still a thing but idk.

@@djprogramer973 At least, there is something new possibly coming up from other companies, such as Varjo, Lynx (Kickstarter), Arpara (totally Chinese), but I doubt those will make a serious competition any time soon. However, some of them might end up being actually decent and affordable, and without the flaws of their competitors. Also, microLED tech is maturing, and that should be a huge improvement in weight, visual quality and battery life. I had some hopes on Pimax a long time ago but, unfortunately, they are far from being a serious competitor to Oculus and HTC.

@@camelCased Ya by all means I can't wait to see what they produce. I just think that Facebook caused the whole market to be set back a little but it's also not their fault that the competition failed. Hard to compete in an unbalanced market. Facebook has money to burn and is playing the long game. In these early stages they are backing their hardware at a loss (oculus/meta). There are few competitors, so right now it's easy for Meta to crush anything that comes along (who else can sell $1000+ hardware for $400?). Once they have dominated the market and destroyed the competition, then we'll see their real plan and pay the real price. Aaaaaaand, it's no secret their overt intentions to control every aspect of the hardware, software, and YOU.

That would mean a massive loss since Quest is around $800-$1300 without profit from data collection. HTC collects data from the US to sell to CCP at a rate that they can't compete against facebook. Also, HTC only makes enterprise-focused products.

I was out as soon as you said LCD, in a time when owning an OLED TV at home is fast becoming the meta, those washed out black LCD panels are looking very old hat. For that price tag I'd definitely want an Oled screen, and 120hrz at that!
@Thezuule1
@Thezuule1 3 жыл бұрын
There has to be a reason all the VR headsets have moved toward LCD. I assume it relates to response time, pixel persistence, etc. Black levels are only one part of the equation to make the experience feel good.

@@Thezuule1 yeh I absolutely agree, I just wish the tech would catch up, after enjoying true blacks on the Q1, LCDs are still taking some getting used to especially on horror games which is what I mainly play. I appreciate LCD screens had more to offer in terms of advancement regards frame rates, resolution etc, maybe when Oleds catch up that will roll out again in future headsets, although I'd bet my house the real reason that tech isn't available yet is because Facebook want to keep cost down at the moment to encourage uptake.
@Thezuule1
@Thezuule1 3 жыл бұрын
@@dirtytechno4948 the thing though is that none of the new headsets that have come out or are slated to come out seem to be using OLED panels. There has to be some reason behind the scenes if even the premium level PC headsets are sticking with LCD displays. I assume it's some technical thing that just makes them more suited for the kind of low latency stuff you're trying to do with a VR headset. If you're really sold on OLED there's a always Pimax gear but I don't know of anyone else who makes an OLED headset atm.
@dirtytechno4948

@@Thezuule1 just did a bit of research and yeh its got to be a costing issue, the latest Samsung S21 has a 2400 x 1080 pixels, 424 PPI AMOled screen that runs at 120hrz, 2 of those would that would piss over any existing lcd display, Colour range, refresh rate, lag and even lower power consumption it wins in all departments, but two AMOled screens (ideally for IPD slider) in a VR headset would drive costing up massively, that's the reason why it's not the meta, the production process is just too costly at this point for it to be viable, a good all rounder is what VR needs right now to keep things cheap and good value, and that is LCD. For now we'll just have to wait. I'll checkout that other Oled thanks for the info.
