It's all about the history for the last segment in Taipei, Taiwan. Eddie spends an afternoon on Shenkeng Old Street soaking up deep-rooted local traditions. Next, he hits up the Randall Cunningham of stinky tofu restaurants, explores ancient Eastern medicine with cupping therapy on his thrown-out back, and finally kicks back with a tea ceremony. Then it's back to New York-and on to Miami next.

Maybe it's just because I love food, travel, hip hop and real life characters, but this show is my fucking jam. I'm glad munchies is re-uploading this 'cause I didn't get to watch it on Vice.

Just for the record, though the city was a mining town before it was turned to a tourist attraction, the charcoal flavour in tofu did not came from the water. It actually came from the emusilver that is used. Normally, tofu uses food grade lime or bittern as emulsifier; but in Sheng Keng, traditionally, they use burned straw. That is what gives the Sheng Keng tofu that special taste

Uprated, shared. Another interesting one. Hormonal problems, fibroids = soya. I can't handle it, unfortunately. Lots of stuff in this one. Here in France, a lot of stuff like the "cupping" is at least partially covered by basic universal health care. Mésothérapie, acupuncture, homeopathy, sophrologie, lymphatic drainage, physical therapy, chiropractors who use pressure points on the neck to give you the feeling of a long weekend vacation of rest, and plenty of Asiatic doctors who tend to be excellent. I've taken friends visiting from the States around to have eye checks and glasses, dental care, et c. Enough about France, I like it here. Again, I would have had at least a bite of everything shown here, even the tofu. I agree with what you said at the end, very much -- one culture is not better than another, just it's own thing. I studied Chinese herbology decades ago, formally, and still refer to my materials. Just cleared up a tooth abcess in two days, will just go next week to a regular dentist for a classic check. Very informative despite the rudeness often, ha ha ha! Thank you. You are what you are, Mr. Huang. Salute!

It's great that your health care actually covers eastern medicine. Acupuncture uses the concept of using "chi" energy pathways to target problems, this concept (even though very old in chinese history) is hard to be acknowledged by the scientific world mainly because the concept of "chi" energy is still not well known. Today more people are starting to understand "chi" from the increase in awareness of new age spiritual topics such as meditation (which is basically manipulating your chi energy), but again like this video said, both Eastern and Western medicine has its benefits.

@CuteCatFaith 9 жыл бұрын
jms Yes. For some reason I found acupuncture in the USA and France terribly painful, but the first time I had it, it really helped move a flu along. I understood what they are going for. Pressure points are useful, and I like curing my own headaches or migraines in minutes myself, alone, and quieting a fussy baby or kid in a meltdown. I see people doing all the wrong things. I found a chiropractor here in France who does an eight-minute touching using the weight of your head, and I only had to pay 15 euros extra myself. Worth it, as it felt like a long, restful four-day vacation weekend. I mentioned it to some pals and same as with me, first try, they were clear and rested. I learned long ago how to feel where a person's chi is blocked. I don't even have to ask them to undress or actually touch them. Never fails. I don't advise how to resolve it, ever, but they consult and I hear, yup, they feel better, easy to help. It's very painful and confusing when you're blocked somehow. I actually learned about pressure points from a Native American.

Some comments to expand on Eddie's observations, from a Westerner who's lived in Taiwan for 30+ years -- * Stinky Tofu: I am completely in a minority when I say I don't understand the big deal. It's a decent tasting dish that makes the whole neighborhood smell like a toilet. People who like snacking caviar in an outhouse can appreciate it. * The 1,000-year old eggs (or 100 years, whatever) are called pi-dan. "Dan" here means egg. This, with tofu, is a fantastic help to a hangover. I was told by a girl whose family owned an egg business that originally, horse urine was used to soak the eggs in to turn them greenish-clear, but now they use chemicals. Not sure which is more unsettling. * Chinese-medicine doctors can be as quacky as Western ones, although the latter will be more expensive. Had a back problem, went to a"famous" Chinese doctor for two months, nothing. Found a different doctor, fixed me. Pay attention to your body, not the myths. * As The Man says: cultures are just different, not better or worse. Lots of Taiwanese view the USA as the promised land. I'm very happy in Taiwan.
