Huawei were using an open source version of Android. This may no longer be the case as they have been developing their own software from scratch (with no reliance on Google) personally this is good but it'll be difficult in western markets where you have either apple or Android

Harmony OS, uses the same open source code as android but is a separate OS and Harmony OS Next is basically Harmony OS using a unique source code and that's why it won't support Android APK apps, and as it stands now the Beta version used by developers shows that it is much smoother than Android and IOS and has advanced AI features, so yes it is a big heck of a deal.

Harmony currently is just a Android skin you're right, but Harmony Next refers to their kernel rewrite which isn't based on Android, though it might have some compatibility with Android apps and features
