You could have also used Scotch 33+ electric tape to protect the gpu and CPU. It doesn’t melt and it’s decent at transferring heat.

I put Liquid Metal Ultra years ago on my laptop (Yoga 2 Pro, i5-4200u with the 3200x1800 screen) and quickly noticed the heat didn't soak into the keyboard area and overall the laptop stayed much cooler while the exhaust got uncomfortably hot lol. I also noticed it was faster because it was free to turbo all the time and killed about an hour of battery life, although you can easily argue that an hour of productivity was saved. Love that laptop and still don't see any reason to get a new one 6 YEARS later, coming from someone that never had a laptop for more than 2 years.

Damn straight son! I'm still over here with me (not so trusty at the moment) good ol Acer Travelmate P645-MG Ive been troubleshooting it for the past weeks since it fails updating windows which is awesome because your CPU is tied up at 80-100% usage until the message pops up that you now may restart your system. But still, I think I got it fixed now, waiting for the magic to happen atm and I think if it takes this one like a champ, this bad boy is still plenty for the stuff I do for like 2 maybe even 3 years. Gotta replace the battery tho, itd at 33.8% wear and boy, you feel those 20Wh missing. Edit to add: it got the I7-4510U in it @2.79GHz. 2C/4T performance to the max lol

I think the best way test liquid metal is to use a fixed fan profile before liquid metal application and then after re pasting with liquid metal that same exact fan profile should be used to see the difference in temperatures. Most of the times the fans dont even ramp up when liquid metal is applied, that's why we dont exactly get to know the exact temperatures drop that we achieved..

I'm using Lithium grease (lithol 24 in my case) around the dies , creates a great barrier so nothing will spill out and is removable in case if you need to. Also it probably aids in thermal transferring since it still touches both surfaces. I think for laptops its a better option than nail polish

The only downside -which is quite annoying- is that when I close my screen, it looks like the laptop doesn't recognize it and doesn't go to sleep. The only way is to manually turn it off or put it to sleep. I do believe I reinstalled everything correctly but I may have missed something. Do you have an idea of where it might come from? Cool vid! Pretty interesting to see other branded laptops being taken apart. I've worked on a lot of Dell and Apple laptops. All a very similar in nature. Gaming laptops always have a lot of tech inside. Surprising, imho Macbooks are easier to work on from a hardware point of view (Superior quality parts + less moving parts = less potential problems!). Always replacing system boards, heatsinks, fans, LCD panels and ram with Dell hardware. Also it is a good idea to disconnect the battery prior to commencing any work inside the laptop! :)

I would be concerned with longevity. Bare copper tends to soak up the gallium of the liquid metal, therefore 'drying out'. Though I'm not sure how fast gallium diffuses into copper.
@ThisGraziato

@@cl4ster17 I've seen a lot of videos and read a lot of experiences of many users before using it. For what i can tell, the corrosion is absolutely minimal in the long therm (it's absolutely worth it and doesn't hurt performances). If you have an aluminium heatsink, it's another story: the corrosion would be brutal and very fast!

Hey, I'd be interested to see a follow up on this video. When I was looking into putting LM on my laptop (MSI GS63VR), the general consensus I got when asking around on forums and reddit and stuff was a pretty resounding IT'S NOT WORTH IT YOU'LL CORRODE AND SHORT YOUR LAPTOP etc. Quite a few people suggested that even if I did a good job of protecting nearby components (with nail polish and tape or whatever), liquid metal is so volatile that it would inevitably scatter throughout the laptop and short something that shouldn't short--it would brick the laptop. I thought that was farfetched, but I also needed my laptop to be reliable, so I just used Kryonaut and have been happy with the results. It would be cool to see you open this up at some point down the line and see what the application looks like. And, to put the above-mentioned haters to bed, it would be funny to see you do a shake/shock test to see if that causes any of the compound to go running loose. Cheers!

1st mistake: nail polish. Proper silicon conformal liquid has much higher thermal resistance. About 125-200 degrees. Which will turn into hard crystal after applying around the gpu die, protecting the components around the silicone from LM. 2nd mistake: I'll admit this was one of the cleanest application ever. However, you should never get the syringe anywhere over the motherboard. Put some LM in a glass bowl or something, soak the q tip in it then apply with the q tip. A microscopic, single ball of that LM can be the death of the motherboard. 3rd mistake: always double check your heatsink after setting it down for the first time. Pull it up then check for spillage in case there was too much LM. Use the plastic nozzle provided with the syringe to suck in excess LM or wipe off with a q tip if already spilled. Then put the heatsink back on

Please note that I expect the TIM to go through something akin to galvanic corrosion since the GPU & CPU share the same cooling solution. It may take as long as about 6 months, but the thermals and small voltage differential will cause the TIM to convert over to solid, immobile material. I had this occur on my HP ProBook 450 G3. Had to scrape and sand the GPU copper slug and use normal TIM to resolve this.
@cl4ster17
@cl4ster17 5 жыл бұрын
Your explanation is completely wrong. There is no electricity flowing through the heat sink and there is no chemical reaction going on. What happens instead is the gallium will diffuse into the copper, decreasing the gallium concentration of the liquid metal (essentially an eutectic alloy) thereby increasing its melting point to the point where it is no longer liquid at room temperature. To counter this process you would need something like nickel plating to act as a diffusion barrier.
@Michael-OBrien
@Michael-OBrien 5 жыл бұрын
cl4ster17 except that the CPU and iGPU dies in the same setup did not experience any physical change. Diffusion into the copper is to be expected, but when the rest of the galinstan-like alloy converts to a solid and temps gradually rise 30 °C, there is more substantial change happening. It is plausible that a voltage differential caused by static buildup due to the air flow through the fans causes this. You don’t need much to have a galvanic reaction. Especially at elevated temperatures. Please note that even the gallium did minor etching into the AMD silicon die at the same time. If the cause is from a charge differential, then I would expect the iGPU & CPU in that setup to experience the phenomenon as they are in the middle of the cooling solution, which is where my discrete GPU is.
@Michael-OBrien
@Michael-OBrien 5 жыл бұрын
To reiterate: gallium diffusion into the copper slug does not account for converting the rest of the liquidous galinstan-like allow into a solid.

A piece of advice to anyone new to applying LM: Do not push the syringe and squeeze LM directly on your CPU/GPU die. If your syringe goes kinda unsmooth and/or you lose control on your hand, you may end up in a total, hard to clean up and dangerous mess on your motherboard.

So instead of using Thermal pads, would the carbon pad be better on the ram as it's not as thick. I wonder if plastigauge could be used to measure the gap like we use for quick checking crank/rod cap to journal gaps on engines?

A carbon pad might still be too thick. I would go the safest route and just use thermal paste on the RAM.

@@cl4ster17 That's why I talked about using Pasticgauge to get an idea of what the clearance is for the ram to heatsink is. plus the carbon pad is way thinner than normal thermal pads.

Hey. I have a quick question. Does your Huawei MateBook X Pro also have constant coil whine? Mine has it even when only browsing and using Word on battery-saver. Thank you. All the best from Denmark, Yousif

You should be fine but if this bricks on you I’d look at the contact points on the PCB surrounding the CPU. I’ve seen shorts at these spots before 👍

Does anyone know how to reset the bios password? I was going to try removing the CMOS battery to clear it but not sure where that battery is on this laptop.
