I gatecrash the National Microcar Rally in my enormous Citroen 2CV - words I never thought I would use.
This one has all the oddities: Bond Minicar, Heinkel-Trojan, Messerschmitt, Scootacar, Bond Bug, Reliant Fox (including another Tandy camper), a remarkable Powerdrive, Berkeley three- and four-wheelers, Autobianchi Bianchina, a Lambretta-powered Willam van (not William!), Vespa 400, Lloyd Alexander, Goggomobil saloon and coupe and a Mochet. Also includes some hot Bond Minicar turning circle action, and a visit to the Anson Engine Museum in Cheshire. Definitely worth a visit.
There will be videos upcoming on a Messerschmitt KR200 cabriolet and a Bond Minicar MkG.
This is the first video from that weekend. The second will be on the 1000 Classics event at Cholmondeley Castle.

Sadly looking at the status after you got on the site I don't think we will win, we had it at the beginning but we are right now in third as I am writing this comment and we would need to pull in at least another 2000 votes to put us comfortably in the lead. I am not trying to be a debbie downer but we are really going to have to dig deep to put us comfortably in the lead!

Seemed a lot better attended than this years rally (which was our first in a 2cv). My first car was a Powerdrive at age 16 and then a Bond MkD. The Bond carried me and my mate all over the UK camping. Great car. I so wish I have one now!

I would have thorougly enjoyed that event, my Uncle had a Bond before I was born in '69 and the stories he told about it were so interesting. Only ever seen 2, 1 was about 10 years ago in Darlington and the sound it made was epic, the other was a non runner I saw last week at a classic car auction.

Thanks for a heart-warming smile of a video to go with my Monday morning cup of tea. It's crazy to think vehicles like these were ever made, let alone commercially produced. A little glimpse of a time when full sized cars were beyond the realms of regular folk and a whole market sprang up to meet more modest needs. My Dad's first car was a Reliant Regal he bought in the early 70's simply because it was cheap and he could drive it on a motorbike license. I remember him spending a lot of time peering into the hatch on the front like a tortured soul fighting with a twin-tub. Happy days!

The Museum is about 3 miles from me,the 3D map of the old mining area is amazing. When on tavels around the country,I try to collect bits of rock for my rockery and asked one of the volunteers if they had any Poynton coal. For health and safety, and quite rightly, they would not let me go and look on their slag heap.I asked a local dog-walker if they had seen any coal, and she told me where some occasionally falls onto a local footpath .The peices I found are now in my garden.Regard to microcars I had a Reliant Kitten for 17 years until it was fire-damaged and was used as a basis for a Tempest.Whilst I had that, I bought a Fox ,4 seater with side windows, bought from a friend in Cornwall Ran it for years until it caught fire, had it repaired, then part-exed it with the Kitten running chassis in exchange for a Tempest.

My God, I enjoyed that! There was something quite heroic about those wonderfully daft little cars. Adverts of the day used illustrations that made them look about three times as big as they actually were. I hate to think what long journeys on 1950s roads would have been like though, especially 3 or 4 up. Brilliant vid, thanks for posting. Oh, haven't seen the Invacar around Devil's Bridge recently either!

I had a 2CV many years ago and I am quite amazed to see you overtaking another car I found that to be a bit frightening even if you could find a nice strait road about 2 miles long. I liked the micro cars in the 1960s but was always a bit large to fit into one so never got one .

My dad and I both migrated to 4 wheels via reliant 3 wheelers using our motor bike licenses. At the time dad bought his new it was one up on the neighbours Bond as we had reverse and he had to push his backwards... I rolled my regal right over but it was easy to patch up with loads of resin and glass from Halfords. My brother had an Isetta which lost the back wheel in a long run and my cousin had a Messerschmidt so we have quite a family history with these things.

Micro cars are one of many guilty secrets in my life :) It all started at an early age - seeing a Messerschmitt every morning on the way to primary school plus thumbing through the pages of the "Observer's Book of Automobiles" gazing in wonder at Goggomobils (a favourite of mine), NSU Prinz's, Bond Minicars and then my Dad's mate owning a Reliant van (the one with an open motorcycle wheel at the front) all did the damage. I've never found a cure and this amazing video has fuelled the addiction!

9:10 That brings back memories, the first car I went to work in, only it was red with a rag top. The owner was a guy called Ken who would pick me up at the end of our road for the 22 mile run each morning. If I was late he would switch her off and wait. Then when I arrived, up would come the bonnet and he would kick start the 197 cc Villiers engine. It was cold and wet in the winter but with the top down in the summer it was great. If you don't know why the Bond's were being pushed backwards? They had no reverse gear, if you used a bike why would you need a reverse gear, strange thinking on the part of some moron in government If you had a motorcycle licence you could drive a Bond in the '50's and '60's before the law was changed. I have owned five Regal's I took one to Jersey one year and people stopped and pointed and asked us about it. Thanks Hubnut.

Brought back memories of my uncles Heinkel bubble car which he purchased new! and went on to tour Scotland in. Folk were made of stern stuff in the very early 60's . On the subject of large diesel engines there's a museum not far from where you live called Internal fire, run by Paul and Hazel well worth a look. They have a ' pocket power station' powered by a Rolls Royce jet engine amongst other very interesting stuff.

Very enjoyable and interesting, thankyou. I'm old enough to remember seeing microcars and bubble cars regularily in the early 60s on the A259 Kent coast road, but they disappeared fast soon after. One memory is a neighbour taking me for a ride in his bubble car but us getting stuck in it after parking as he was unable to reverse - had to get someone to push it back for us.

One things I want/need in my life is a trabant 601. Grew up with one living in a hedge at the other end of our village, bloke would never sell it and think it got scrapped (if they can do such a thing to them) just so expensive to buy now days. Fancy one as a close range daily driver. Good turn out for the show lots of interesting sights, you need to buy an "eye spy" micro car book, could probably tick all of them off in one go there!
