Jacob Gallus was lid van de Weense hofkapel en werkte rond 1586 als cantor in Praag. Ondanks zijn korte leven was hij zeer beroemd en liet zo’n 500 werken na. Stilistisch bekeken is Gallus bijzonder veelzijdig en hij laat op Venetiaanse leest geschoeide meerkorigheid op wonderlijke manier samenvloeien met het contrapunt van de Vlaamse polyfonisten. Tekstexpressie wordt versterkt door woordschilderingen of gewaagde chromatiek. Het Huelgas Ensemble is de best denkbare ambassadeur voor Gallus’ schitterende polyfone fusion.

Very artistic performance of these late-Renaissance Motets! All singers exchange their voices with perfect synchronicity under the appropriate leading by the excellent conductor.

It seems that piece has been recorded only by the Huelgas Ensemble on this CD: www.discogs.com/Jacobus-Gallus-Huelgas-Ensemble-Paul-Van-Nevel-Opus-Musicum-Missa-Super-Sancta-Maria/release/1762420. I can't find that recording on KZfaq or Spotify and most Amazon sites show it as unavailable, but I did see one copy on eBay: www.ebay.com/itm/Jacobus-Gallus-Opus-Musicum-Missa-super-Sancta-Maria-CD-Dec-1995-Sony-Mus/223791902355.
