Huey Lewis and the News are in the mood to celebrate, joking about their age as they prepare for the release of what is almost certainly their last album, titled "Weather." At 69, Lewis, who has performed in bands for most of his life, had no intention of slowing down, but his diagnosis of Meniere's Disease - a hearing disorder which has affected his voice - has made the decision for him. John Blackstone reports.

Meniers is a strange disease. It is often accompanied w debilitating vertigo. Often times there are fake noises that the ear is always hearing, like crunching leaves. So he doesn't have typical deafness. It often sounds like trying to hear through a broken speaker. So even if there is no actual hearing loss, the other sounds drown out what he can hear. But there are days, weeks...that the noises subside. Those are the days that he should take full advantage of, and go out and listen to everything he usually misses. Cutting the audio nerve is a potential cure for the maddening noise, but it will guarantee true deafness and may not eliminate the noise. People have become suicidal when it is really bad.

I've had Meniere's for over 25 years. It took me out of work and into early retirement. It's a very debilitating condition. I've lost a great deal of my hearing. The ringing is constant. The vertigo is episodic. It can fluctuate from mild to severe. Each day is different and you can never tell. There is no warning before an episode. Some days are so bad I'm spinning out of control and vomiting... can't even get out of bed. Thank goodness it's lessened somewhat over time. I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I know what you go through Huey!

I'm sorry for what you're going through and I understand. I have tinnitus ringing all the time, but what's worse is that I have lymphedema which swells up your body because the lymphatic system isn't working. It's terribly painful and can lead to cellulitis and death. When we were younger, we never imagined having these problems, did we? Things we never heard of before a diagnosis runs our everyday lives now. Take care.

I loved Huey Lewis and the News as a kid in the 1980s and won't ever forget the Back to the Future cameo. It's really sad to see his condition sideline the band indefinitely (perhaps forever). They are one of the very few music acts that not only released great albums, but also avoided the rock-n-roll cliches of nihilistic egoism or drug and alcohol abuse. Here I want to thank them for their contribution to music history.

Very nice gentleman who, once he got off his phone was cordial and kind when we ran into each other while I worked there...I was so glad to have that opportunity to tell him how much I enjoyed their entire body of work, having just listened to a lot of their hits on YT the week before...serendipity is a real thing when your heart loves music so much. Godspeed, Mr. Lewis and group...I look forward to the last or next album release. Well done guys!! Timeless beat and songwriting. How lucky is that, now that he's unable to hear music on stage. Wow. We are losing some of the most iconic musicians we know and love. A lot to father time. Retirement Elton John, and now forced retirement to Peter Frampton (a nerve disease) and now Huey Lewis. We just lost Neil Peart of Rush last week. This is sad. What makes this bad is that a musician and music lover can't listen to music. I love music more that almost anything. I can't imagine not being able to enjoy it. I wish him and the band all the best.

I love him his music really helped me during a difficult period of my life When I was in the hospital up in Yale in New Haven Connecticut I was up there because of physical contact problems I had and other behavior issues I was going through when I was younger about 7 or 8 years old during free time they had his album sports on A Vynil record and I would listen to that record and it made me happy during those difficult times when I was feeling sad or angry or upset and listening to sports and thriller on a Vynil record helped me through those dark times thank you Huey Lewis for your music for helping me get through a rough patch in my life 😭❤️🙏😉😊

I used to be a renegade. I used to mess around... Huey Lewis’ music takes me back to my childhood, and always sparks a great emotion when I hear that band! He’ll have some time off now... but Huey will take that talent and character with him beyond this mortal coil. That’s the power of love.

Funny, I was just listening to Huey Lewis's album on my commute last Tuesday. He and is band will always be one of my very favorites. When he performed at Universal Studio's Mardi Gras concert, I never missed it. One of the greatest performer, along with Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, that ever put an album out. Sorry to find this about him. "Bad is Bad"

The first time I saw them was Spring, 2018 in Tulsa and they put on an amazing show!!! I even got a fist bump! I do believe this was their last show that he was able to perform before his Dallas show where he could not perform properly. A wonderful memory and such an amazing concert. This really sucks. We love you Huey!
