This sort of thing happened all the time in the 80's. Women would wake up in the middle of the night and be startled to see a band singing to them. Sometime it was Huey Lewis and the News, sometimes it was Duran Duran, sometimes it was Tears for Fears. If you were really unlucky, you might get Alice Cooper or Taco. And then the bands would finish their song and wander off into the night or sometimes stay for breakfast as in this video. Those were the good days.

Huey Lewis is a fascinating dude. He grew up in San Francisco in the 50s and 60s where his Polish mom got together with Beat poet Lew Welch (who became his step-father) after his parents divorced. He was a gifted kid who skipped a grade and got a perfect math score on the math SAT and was an All-State baseball player who went to Cornell to study engineering. He caught the music bug, hitchhiked across the country and around Europe while learning the harmonica and busking, dropped out of school and worked as a carpenter and other jobs while bouncing around different Bay area bands in the 1970s. He hooked up with Mutt Lange when he was in a band called the Clovers and played with Van Morrison and Thin Lizzy after they disbanded. He had definitely paid his dues when this breakthrough hit came through in the early 80s.

Such an underrated band, with harmonies as good or better than the eagles or the 4 seasons, and a lead singer happy to showcase how awesome his backup is. One thing I admire about Huey Lewis, he is the lead singer, but he never took it like a big head and went solo, EVER! He always let the boys in his band shine, even though he led this band, in their videos the whole band had time to shine in all their scenes

I do agree but in the 1990s when The News' prime ended, Huey was going to release a solo album called "Back In Blue" but it was cancelled due to schueduling conflicts. The song "100 Years From Now" was supposed to be the main single but instead was re-recorded by The News in 1996

This is one of the best choruses in any song ever written. The rest of the band having the spotlight for the main hook was a spark of genius and it still stands out today as one of the best showcases of a band in all of music. The backing vocals were always as strong as the music, and that's one of the things that made this band so great. I will always love HL&TN! Some of the best music ever recorded.

What I love about this song is it's so incredible in its exuberance. Mom and I were running errands, this song came on, and my usually-conservative mom started imitating their high-pitch vocals. By the second chorus, she and I were head-bopping while both of us belted out this song while driving. Great stuff. And such a ridiculous music video! They so need to get these guys back together and do a commercial!

Kay Fey Well, the song was written by Robert John "Mutt" Lange. While he didn't produce this recording, high-pitch backing vocals was a key thing on many of his productions for City Boy, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams, Shania Twain etc. Not so much on his work for AC/DC though, LOL. "Mutt" did however produce Clover, the 70's band with Huey Lewis and keyboardist Sean Hopper as two of the members.

I love this song. --- [1] This is the sweetest, most melodic, & best of all of Huey Lewis & The News' wonderful & numerous hits. "Do You Believe In Love" has a syrupy sweet melody & some of the best tight, up-front, multi-part vocal harmonies in all of rock. --- [2] This song has lots of excellent simple triad vocal harmonies. However, quite interestingly, a fair amount of the vocal harmonies are not just these simple triads, but are in some nice minor 7th vocal triads. --- [3] Indeed in rock, there are not a lot of simple triad vocal harmonies. However, in rock, you hardly ever see minor 7th vocal triads. Really cool. --- [4] This is the best of many great Huey Lewis songs. Richard

@@rommee You are so correct, such a beautiful sound. OK, the following is a bit music technical/geeky, but bear with me. --- [1] I just did a quick analysis of the "photograph" phrase in the bridge. --- [2] Just prior to "photograph", it seems that the background harmony singers sing an E major triad with the B (the E major triad's 5th) on top. --- [3] On "photograph", they go to a B major 7th quadriad (chord) & with the Bb (the B major 7th's major 7th) on top. --- [4] A major 7th chord is so rich sounding because of the audio/sound tension between the root & the major 7th (one-half of a step from each other) playing simultaneously. --- [5] In most rock songs, a major 7th chord is not frequently used. However, it does show up every so often, just like here at "photograph". Thanks.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humour.
