If I were still collecting cards, I would dump all of those expensive shiny modern cards (especially the early players who haven't proven anything over a career) and buy old cards (Ruth, Cobb, Mays, Mantle etc). The modern stuff always loses its value when the hype is over, while the old stuff ages like fine wine. I've seen this before. Just some advice from an old dude.

I hope collectors realize we're going to have a "junk PSA era" if collectors continue to get cards with high pops graded.. I mean market corrections will be made. Either the raw cards will go up to match the value of PSA 9's and 10's or the graded cards themselves will fall... When it comes to some cards the rule is a PSA 9 or 10 not the exception..
@Hero-3
@Hero-3 3 жыл бұрын
Agree w the pop. That shouldn’t way heavily on every card. Some cards yes but not every card.
@Swoop187OG187
@Swoop187OG187 3 жыл бұрын
@@Hero-3 Of course not with every card, however we have a significant issue in the hobby with fools getting modern junk graded and selling the junk at a premium. Look, a pack fresh modern card is expected to be a gem-mint card, and I don't need PSA to confirm that the $5 dollar card I just pulled out of a pack and put directly into a top loader is a gem mint card all for the low price of $20 bucks and a nice holder... PSA cant just make a raw $5 dollar card - which should be gem-mint - worth $100 bucks based purely on their confirmation. It doesn't make any sense - the card SHOULD grade a 9 or 10 so how does that make the card scarce or significant or belong to a special club?.. I mean PSA 9's and 10's are absolutely common when it comes to modern cards, they've become the rule and not the exception so a modern raw card valued at $5 dollars shouldn't get a significant premium or multiplier just to confirm what is expected.. Nor would any actual experienced collector pay $100 bucks for a modern card valued at $5 bucks raw... I mean in just about every situation a card should be valued at the cost of the grading fee in mid-grade (more like a 7/8) alone to justify having the card graded otherwise it's a lotto ticket, and unfortunately too many "collectors" like to play the lotto, and both the winning tickets and losing tickets physically exist and are flooding the market, I mean from an economic perspective at least you can throw away a losing lotto ticket, lol - no one is going to throw a card away - even if it got a disappointing grade... Look, my point is that the market is absolutely saturated with cheap modern graded cards - cards that should obviously be gem-mint that are being invested in heavily and this junk that gets a 9 or 10 has absolutely no business whatsoever fetching the premiums they do, and they're only fetching the premiums they do because there are a bunch of casual collectors and investors that are paying these premiums.. I mean no experienced collector is ever going to pay $100 bucks for a modern base card valued at $5 bucks raw which graded to a PSA 10, and sooner or later there will be a market correction reflecting that... And don't get me wrong, there are plenty of cards where it makes absolute sense to have them graded, however the grading fee alone shouldn't play a role in the cards value.. I mean if you have a rare modern card with significant value you should get it graded to validate it's authenticity - not the grade, and in most cases significantly valued cards are rare cards and it's the rarity of those cards that dictates the value and the grade plays little to no role whatsoever when it comes to modern cards.. Look, if you have say a 2021 Donruss Ryne Sanberg Patch Auto - serial numbered 1/15 then there is absolutely no difference between a PSA 8, 9 or 10 because the card is so rare that if you really wanted the card then that grade isn't going to dictate how much you are willing to pay for it - that all goes out the window because when a card is serial numbered xx/15 beggars cant be picky - when you have an opportunity to buy a card that rare and you can afford it then you buy it and grade doesn't dictate it's value, it's rarity does. Now of course it makes plenty of sense to have vintage cards graded, because obviously grade is pretty much all that matters when it comes to vintage. I mean clearly the older the cards are the lower the average grade is going to be and the more scarce they will become, so obviously a vintage card that grades a PSA 9 will hold significant value when the average grade from the set is a 6.5 - not just because of the rarity but the demand for any high grade vintage card - common, star, superstar or HOF'er it really doesn't matter because there will always be a premium added to the card, and then the star power and popularity of the card and player will add value... Of course this is why high grade commons are in demand - it's the grade that makes the commons valuable - not the name. And look, If you really want to make bank on cards and you're confident in your grading abilities then you can make some serious money just finding vintage commons, having them graded and auctioning them off... What I do, I'll buy anything vintage commons, stars - just as long as it's pre-1980 I'll buy it at the right price then I will go though it all, look at the pop reports and grade and focus on those 2 factors alone.. I mean of course it's always fun to pull vintage superstar HOF'ers regardless of the grade, but some of those commons in high grade can be worth more than some of these superstars in the same exact grade, and a lot of collectors don't know that. So yea, you can make a living buying and selling commons alone... Also, those that are looking for high grade commons have more than enough money to spend, I mean you have to have money to even attempt to put a high grade er PSA 9 or 10 vintage set together. I mean if you're in that position to even attempt it then it's clearly about the challenge and not the money, lol - so yea these "high rollers" have no issue with paying $$$$ for commons - yes 4 figures for some....

@@philsbarbershop4229 Well it really depends on the card(s), era and your intent. Are you collecting, investing, flipping? I mean outside of collecting and flipping I personally would stay away from anything slabbed from the "junk wax era" - at least the "common" stuff because their values are not sustainable long-term at all considering 95% of copies are unslabbed and 90% of those that have been slabbed are in high grade - also those pop reports will certainly continue to rise over time as more and more of them are slabbed, and most will grade out to PSA 9's and 10.. Unfortunately junk wax cards are a dime a dozen and junk wax era product is more than abundant but if you're talking vintage or other scarce sets, yea I would certainly pay attention to pop reports - but just about anything desirable post 1980 is generally high grade to begin with and overproduced.. When it comes to modern cards (post 2000), look keep in mind they're much more scarce than junk wax era products however, like junk wax era products the strong majority will grade 9 and 10, but vintage is a different animal - vintage is where professional grading and pop reports matter, because back in the day cards weren't manufactured as collectibles or investments - they were toys and like toys many were lost or destroyed over the years - not only that but cards of star players were popular back in the day hence frequently traded hence abused so anything vintage and in high grade - especially stars/hall of famers is gold.. What's high grade? well IMO, an average card should grade to it's year, so a 1960 Topps for example should grade a PSA 6, a 1965 Topps a PSA 6.5, 1970 a PSA 7 and so on.. So anything graded higher than it's year is very desirable hence money in the bank (even commons), and pop reports matter because some cards are "short prints" (SP) meaning they're far more scarce than others of the same set, and some cards have "running printing flaws" - meaning the strong majority of that particular card share a common flaw, whether it's centering or a print anomaly etc so finding a high grade copy of that card is almost impossible - the 1979 Topps Ozzie Smith Rookie is a fantastic example of this phenomena - that card is seriously impossible to find centered or close to centered and there are only a few PSA 9's and 10's because of it... So if you're investing vintage is always fun but pop reports matter significantly more than modern or junk wax era cards. So yea, pop reports do matter depending on the era, product and card - but like I said - keep in mind that when it comes to junk wax era and modern cards there are still tons and tons and tons of them out there and the pop reports are going to continue to grow and as they grow obviously supply and demand will dictate their value.. I mean serial numbered cards are the way to go because you know how many of them have been produced and obviously the lower the better - but again I would certainly reference the pop reports even on serial numbered cards just to see what the average grade is on the particular card because there could be common flaws and a high grade copy could be exceptional... Look, just keep in mind that supply and demand determines a cards value, and keep in mind that when it comes to junk wax era and modern product the overwhelming majority will be high grade - PSA 9/10, however vintage is a whole different ball game, no pun intended.... Thanks for the reply and good luck!

@D. John There is always deals like that.It comes down to how legit the player is too. I bought a Patrick Marleau card for around $25 5 years ago and it is worth around $200 now.The difference being he broke a record during that time and the hobby exploded.Had he not broke that record his card would be wroth maybe $100 I assume at most. I bought 2 1972 Topps #310 Roberto Clemente In Action Pirates HOF PSA 9 OC for around $40 each. On ebay the psa 8 sells for $300 to $500 at the highest and no 9 or 10 has been sold in 3 months. You are right though some of the most mass produced cards that sell for $200 now you would never think you would see the day and some still do not. One example of that is my 1991 Topps Stadium Club Brett Favre #94 RC Rookie PSA 9.That card is LUCKY to sell for $100 today.5 years ago I probably paid around $40 and even with that explosion the card barely went up in value.

Done scientifically, this was great. But, what didn't come into this very much is that typically with a trade, at least one of the people has an emotional motivation for wanting the card, and that tips the scales bc that person is at a disadvantage. Where it helps is if that emotional tie is shared by other collectors so that the card increases in value.

It's crazy to think Trout is undervalued right now, but he totally is... And he's leading the league in AVG, OBP, OPS, SLG... You know just being the GOAT, doing GOAT things while the "investors" go after the sports center headline players...

@@ozsportscardcollector4720 Trout just statistically had his best month out of 54 months at the MLB level. Even for him it wasn't business as usual. I'm not sure there's much to be concerned about with a collection of a guy who's already a HOF lock. The facts are, Acuna is awesome, but probably overvalued at the moment and Trout is probably undervalued as he's already done what Acuna has done for 10 years. Trout is a great buy right now. Acuna is great, but purely from an investing standpoint, Trout is safer with more upside. I think that's what Chase was referring to.

@@ozsportscardcollector4720 Trout's #s are x15 as good. That what 10 seasons of being the best does. I agree that if you're investing giving everyone the secret hot tip isn't what you really ought to be doing. As for breaking records, if the Vegas Dave sells again today, it's worth more than it was 1/2 a year ago... So there's more value there. A trout flagship base 10 is selling for $4,200 right now. Bat Down Base 10 is selling for $3,100. I think putting Acuna $1,100 away from a trout rookie is absurdly overvalued. Acuna is 4 months ago at 1200-1400 for that same card... Did Trout's cards move that same notch? Nope...
@1CentSportsCards
@1CentSportsCards 3 жыл бұрын
@@ozsportscardcollector4720 the pop report shows that there's only about x8 of the Trout's to the bat down. And due to the fact that the Update card loses value due to it not being his first Topps RC rookie you can't compare those two. The Bat down has to serve as the true RC so yes, there are less of the bat down to the trout. the fact is, even at 8 times less, neither of the two cards are hard to find in a 9 or a 10 and with the bat down price history it's way too volitile of a card to consider it undervalued while it's peaking. I love both cards, and if Trout retires today, great investment. If Acuna goes on for 7-15 more years at or near his level right now, great investment. But if Acuna gets injured - he's been on the IL twice the last two seasons - and those numbers dip, there's risk at the price he's at right now while there isn't a lot for Trout even if he was never to play another game.

Without life stresses (no job presumably, or rent) or money concerns, if you have the finances and the access to data (its all available online) and input from communities (social media) then making calls on Jordan and Acuna and Haaland (although he got it wrong on Haaland being in the "UEFA Finals") isn't rocket science.
