Күн бұрын

When you start surfing, you begin a lifelong journey of self-improvement and chasing that intangible (& non-existent) goal of perfecting your abilities.
During the Beginner stages there are traps which a lot of beginner surfers fall into. These traps, errors in technique which often become habitual, restrict a surfer's potential growth and progression in the sport.
In this video I talk about 4 of the most common beginner mistakes that I see holding surfers back. There are more, of course, however these ones have been showing up a lot lately when I observe others out in the line up.

Love the tips on turning. Would love to see a video on transitioning from a big foamie to an intermediate board. I'm comfortable with pop-ups and take-offs, and I'm finding it challenging to turn my 8 ft foamie. I know it's better to get on a smaller board with a bit of volume, but I'd love a breakdown of turning and going along the wave, or even how to transition from bigger board to smaller :) thanks guys!

After getting back into surfing after 23 years this is solid info. I found keep paddling until you feel the wave pushing you and give 2 more then stand up

I like the idea of trying to help beginners with your videos. I started when I was 5 and at the end of the day all you can do is get out there as much as possible and watch closely the guys that are good. That’s what I did an eventually I was as good as most guys out there. Starting young was a big advantage

That is a great instructional video... great information. You certainly have a talent in explaining & conveying the mistakes well... & subsequently providing solutions for... of which some problems are hard pick up on in the moment (surfing)… hence the potential for ongoing frustration. Good job supporting this great sport!

Great tips! I'm practicing my stance on a home made balance board. I feel like it improved my surfing. Is good for train those foot skills. But the first was the most important. You cant do anything if you don't read the wave properly.

Just got my first board last week (long board), first wetsuit and all other gear collected. Waiting for weather to give decent waves here in Rhode Island. These videos are great so I have things to try when I get out there for the first time with my board in these frigid waters. Sub'ed! I am slowly going thru all your content. Great stuff.

Thanks Kale for putting in the effort to teach this fantastic sport. You are very kind and patient person and your enthusiasm shines through your videos. I just wished there was bit less aggro and territorialism out there amongst some surfers. You can't own the ocean no matter how entitled you think you are to it.

Hi, I have almost finished 15 surf classes from a great coach, each class goes for an hour. So my issues still exist- 1. Not able to read wave 2. Not able to get the soft spot whilst paddling 3. Have skin bruises on my lower chest 4. Nose diving 5. Not able to turn. My instructor has told me the mistakes and solutions for above, yet am not able to achieve my desired result.

Another great vid mate. Not sure if you have already done one but if not maybe you can do a vid on some surfing terminology and slang and also what sections of the waves are called. I noticed at the end of this vid you said I see some wedges out there so gotta go and I’ve got no idea what a wedge is. Haha. Cheers mate👍

Kale, I would like to give a little comment if you don't mind. The music is chill, but I found the music with somebody singing kind of makes it a bit difficult to hear you when you're talking outdoors and there was already wind in the background. I had to play backwards a couple times to catch your words. Could you turn down the volume of the background music when you're talking in your future videos? Or just pure music without singing, maybe?

Ryan The Rock however “tic-tacing” looks quite ugly and is ineffective. You’ll want to be moving up and down the top third of the wave. Side to side pumping is a bad habit. Keep your arms relatively still and not too high

The only thing that works is spending hours and hours everday out in the lineup. Middle break white wash reforms are great at the Huntington Beach pier. You start off on white wash and get up slowly on your knese to your feet. Hop into shorebreak and ride left or right!! Thats how you really learn to become great! I should know , spent my life out there and one of the best!!
