The issue is with the lore specifically having to do with the custodians is not a lot of people know their lore. because they aren't created like spaceman people have assumed that leaves the door open for female custodians even though ever since their first appearance all the way back in second edition, we have been told time and time again that they are males. The Horus Heresy Vol. I: Visions of War page 143: "These men are my bodyguards, their lives forfeit to the guarantee of my physical unity. Of their loyalty to me there shall be no question nor doubt. I, and I alone, shall have the authority to stand in judgement over them. No other commander shall they have in battle nor in service. None shall bar them from me and none shall hamper or stall their mission. So it is decreed." 8E Codex page 14: "they are chosen from sons of noble houses and the process of their recruitment and creation is not known to anybody outside those creating them.... ....they are to the emperor the space marines are to their genefather " 9E Codex page 8: "Members of their own families would not recognize them, should they be alive to see what has happened to their son, nephew or cousin" everyone can say the recon mean Lord doesn't matter, but the bolter has always worked like the Bolter has the space means have always worked like the space have there are certain fundamental parts of the canon, such as the emperor being stuck on the golden Throne no matter how much you reckon it has to stay the same for the universe to function. Its not about retconning something, which is bad enough and GW's practice of doing that is fairly extensive. However, its usually for a good reason. This doesnt SEEM to be a good reason other than to drum up controversy to boost clicks and views. Which is a shitty practice GW has done before... not to mention their two biggest investors blackrock and vanguard who exert their influence of companies into causing drama and injecting "woke" messaging in products. The more I think about it, the worse it actually gets. If GW really wanted to expand on it's female characters and factions, they could have expanded on the Sisters of Silence lore, fleshing them out and making them their own army. Something akin to the Grey Knights but a custodes tier/style army, etc. THAT would have been great, actually. an anti-psyker / anti-warp, specialist version of custodes sort of thing. IT could have been awesome. But instead, GW chose the laziest, most pandering, most transparently bullshit way to handle things and completely shit the bed in doing so.

The irony of female Custodes being announced during the worst rule set and win rate the faction has ever had isnt lost on me. The other soft implication of "There have always bern female custodes" is that they have never done anything worth noting in the long list of lore thats been written about them. "Theres nothing saying fenale custodes also born from the high lords of Terra." The express purpose saying they were born from the "SONS of Terra" without explicitly deriving alternatives means that they were ALL male. It wasnt "sons and daughters of Terra" for a reason. To try and do mental gymnastics and try to read between lines that arent there is peak pandering. And somehow, Palpatine returned.

GW has been retconning since Rogue Trader switched 2nd edition. It will be retconning ten editions down the line. There are so many good reasons not to like modern games workshop, like the ludicrous expense, the loss of stores as places to share the hobby, and the speed at which minis are declared invalid. This is bottom of the pile and really not a big deal.

I don’t mind the change per se, but I DO question the timing. This comes on the tail end of 2-3 years of intense gender identity politics within pop culture. Just seems like GW is trying to get on the gender bandwagon, IMHO.

What's up with dislike ratio on the vid? I do not like the change personally, but arguments here are resonable, and nothing outlandish was being said. I don't like the change because of two reasons: One, is that I hate retconing and shoehorning stuff into settings in general. It's forced, lazy and made like crap. Like the Hood Guard guy said, if they were after something like that it SHOULD be covered by some more extensive material, than out of setting twitter declarations, to give player an interesting story and basically any sort of connection and justification. The second one, is obvious ideological motives forcing things noone asked for into the setting much older, than most people currently working in GW on it. I don't like this, because it muddles down main motives of the setting and new "talented" writers and designers use their diversity card as an excuse for bad writing and lazyness. Because I agree, that female custodian character could be introduced in an interesting way that would please the most people, if it was handled and written well, or at least better than girlboss fantasy atomic bombs on Terra, which is simply stupid. There is nothing wrong in adding some girls into custodes, not because some geneseed mumbo jumbo, but because it simply doesn't undermine custodian motives. They are each unique warriors, crafted by the Emperor or his secret technologies, therfore unlike with Space Marines, there is no point in showing here how backwards and non understanding of the process, science and everything that goes behind it the Imperium is. Those guys go beyond those motives anyway. It would be a tragedy however if it was something introduced to Space Marines, and it surely looks like testing the waters, how much can the setting morph, and how much fans are going to tolerate. Adding female space marines, would undermine the main aspects of 40k - the feeling that you are not a person, you are meat for the meatgrinder, to be thrown into war. Space Marines are not magically picked with modern morality rules of equality, equal chances, they are picked because they are physically superior, and the best platform to change into a superhuman, in a freaking space regime, which is non-changing since 10k years. It would be bad, because it would require even more and more suspension of disbelief. In sports, females have separate categories for a reason - physically they are weaker and I can not imagine anyone in grimdark universe to pick those as candidates for SM. In the universe where 95% of recruits die during the process, and it's still called a success. So it's unfitting. Female custodians are not, because they have different vibes - they are not superhuman SOLDIERS, but individualistic heroes, and where there is individuality, there can be variety.

Its not that they want the female custodes that bothers most people I know. Its HOW they go about incorporating them. Why couldnt they have fleshed out the lore of the stodes and the sisters and come up with a more logical evolution of the stodes starting to recruit from them? Couldve have been some legitimately interesting concepts and stories explored there. Instead you get some asshat tweeting, since the beginning theyve always been there. Thats what upsets most people I know. Its lazy and disrespectful to all the lore and stories that have come before.

They have actual said the Custodes are a Brotherhood, and there has been no mentioned of it anywhere before. It also don't make sense, as a women would be weaker than a man. Yes, even with genetic modifications, as there is a limit to what you can do until you have just made a man instead. Increase the bone density, muscle and hormone production a remove the female gense, as we don't want them to start counter the process during the teen years. And what you get is a person that looks like a man, acts like a man and retains no female traits at all. Then the question is why do it ? From the lore side it makes no sense to use more time and effort to do this, as recruits are not a issue and the failure rate is so much higher. From a mini and game side it makes no sense. As there is nothing left that would show they where even female, as they wouldn't have an feature showing it. We can also see in lore they are weaker. None of them have been mentioned, and the one in the codexs is even a weak and new one as we can read by her name. So it's clear it was only done for one thing. To please the turists. We have seen what that has done to other hobbies and franchises that slowly have died or lost it's magic. And as fans we already see this happening now with people starting to call others names if they don't cheer this on as something good.

Bruh, this is one of the most level headed takes on the whole situation. Completely agree with you that a novel is preferred for the retconning of the lore. I can also understand that the silent majority are upset at being gaslit into the lore. But IMO, they should just focus more on rolling dice and their pile of shame. If they really feel strongly about this, then they should vote with their wallet just as if with any other consumer product.

Female custodes, lorewise does it mean the could be in the future half regular human half custodes in the future? Unless the lore said they can't get pregnant. Personally, that's a cool addition. I saw a lot of kitbash female astartes in the past, so it is not totally new idea in the community.

From what I understand, GW has wanted to add female custodes for a long time. I don't know why they didn't do this early on in their HH series. That started almost 20 years ago, well before this global conversation on reheated Rosie the Riveter topics became the meta. I'm fine with the concept, I agree that there is plenty of lore wiggle room for the concept; the timing is lackin. Dig the channel, we out here!

Alright, i will put in my two cents. If you are someone getting bent over female Custodes, than you need to see a therapist. Now was GW approach good? As many have said no. But will it really effect the game overall? No.

Said it before and I'll say it again: this is a stupid hill for people to die on because the game is ridiculously loaded with retcons that utterly overshadow this; Necrons, Stunts, Zoats, the 5th chaos god, Primaris marines the fucking primarchs coming back... Female custodes and/or space marines is a drop in the bucket.

Whether you like it or not, you are using semantics to justify a major groundbreaking lore change. You can do better. We both know this isn't some simple and tiny lore change. Don't try to pretend otherwise. Give this event the gravity it deserves.

I don't mind a female custode provided they have a strong solid back story support it, which i doubt with current projectory. Honestly, a Space Marine Champion of Tau'va is more plausible than female custodes.

I think the timing was questionable but if they treat the existing lore with more respect from now on, such as giving femstodes a backstory the fits in somehow, this could be done pretty well. If they do it right, this could be a great addition to the lore.

I think ABD is probably digging through his desk for those Master of Mankind notes. The people complaining about language use in previous literature forget one of the cardinal rules of Warhammer: It's all in-universe written from a person's perspective. Blame some scribe who messed up the first codex and is going to get servitorized now, blame the Inquisition for meddling, blame the Custodes for having their own propaganda, whatever.

New people get into 40k and get angry about a retcon. Well what about that time Space Marines weren't super human, could have half eldar members and Primarchs weren't even a thing. Hell Horus was just a human general. The story evolves and things are changed or added up. ADB wanted to add female custodes in stories for almost a decade. I would say that the Emperor not obliterating Horus soul at the end of the Siege was a bigger and more impactiful recton than adding female custodes to the setting.

I think no one has realized one possible thing. The new lore doesn't dismiss the possibility of that so called "Female" Custodes WAS a noble son. Making them not just female but the first Trans Custodes lol! They could be genetically and atomically male but identify and use female pronouns ;). Imagine the response from that.

Thank you. I was very pleased by this news. I am so tired of everyone constantly telling me “go play Sisters of Battle”. If the shoe were on the other foot, and there was only ONE entirely male faction, and GW were now adding more men to the game, would these same people still be complaining? I haven’t heard a single woman voice complaint about this. Having female Custodes doesn’t affect the game or even have an impact on the lore. The kind of people that are going to quit the hobby now because there are more women in the game now I am happy to see them go. This hobby is for everyone and GW has always been quite clear about that. The people saying this “goes against the lore” and “ruins the game” are being incredibly hyperbolic and disingenuous.

I think, that lore changes aren't needed, because the author of this video is already buying GW products. All I want to say, I think GW wants to do is make as many female figurines as they can and make as indistinguishable from males as much as it can. This probably contradicts common sense and make all process pointless (because your Female Custodes will look almost like male when in helmets). No dislike fot this video it is good to knew opinion of others.
