We use these in networking. This is how we use something called a circulator. It allows for bidirectional optics or fiber use. Meaning you can use a single strand of fiber for send and receive vs using a pair of strands of fiber (one for transmit TX and one for receive RX)

I would assume it further splits the beams, since it makes 2 perpendicular bits of the original beam. You’d likely have to do it on a different orientation so they don’t overlap and make 3 beams with a combined center one
@palomaran1999
@palomaran1999 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a big expert, but I think that the beams would not split again. After the first split the beams are already polarized, so (as long as the two crystals are positioned in a way that keeps the crystallographic axis parallel) the second crystal would not be able to split each beam because the incoming light would already be polarized. Not really sure though

Someone else mentioned that this is also known as Iceland Spar which the Vikings used to locate the sun on cloudy days for navigation purposes. Another moniker for the calcite crystal is Viking Sunstone. Calcite crystals are pretty common and are actually one of the most abundant mineral, but it does not commonly grow as one large crystal as seen in the video. When it is of the same quality as the one presented in this video, it is known as Optical Calcite (or Iceland Spar/Viking Sunstone as previously mentioned). Iceland has some of the largest deposits in the world of Optical Calcite hence the Iceland Spar name. There is only one mine in USA that mined for Optical Calcite located near Anza-Borrego and The Salton Sea. It was operated by a small team (I think 6-20 people) during WW2. The calcite was needed for it's double refraction properties in the production of the Norden Bombsights.

I was so excited to visit the ankansas diamond mine park as a kid. After hours of digging, I found a calcite crystal, which kinda looks like a diamond at first. I was super excited and thought it might be a real diamond, so we took it to the main desk. The lady behind the counter explained what it was, then my dad asked if calcite was edible for some reason. She said "I guess it won't hurt you" and my dad ate it. And 6 year-old me cried. That moment has been seared into my memory for almost two decades.

So when you put a polarizing filter in front of it and rotate it, you see the two images alternating?
@yumeng4686
@yumeng4686 9 ай бұрын
Petrographic microscopes (the ones you use to look at rock as thin sections) actually have multiple polarizers. First filter comes in and you can't see the calcite. Second filter oriented at 90 deg compared to the first polarizer, you start seeing rainbows from the calcite due to its high birefringence (which is the difference of its two refractive indices).
