Today we're shooting out some different drum room mic options! Trying out 4 different mic styles (large & small diaphragm condensers, dynamics, and ribbons) in 4 different positions - we'll see what sounds cool and take note of the differences between them. We'll hear the mics dry and then walk through some processing together (EQ & compression). Enjoy and let us know what your favorite was! Great video, and love your beautiful studio! The best room mic set up I have seen was from an engineer named Moses Schneider. He placed two mics side by side right next to each other right in front of the kick drum facing away from the kick drum toward the opposite far wall of the drum kit. With this set up the room mics are basically doubling the distance of the room because the mics have to hit the far wall and come back the same distance to the mics. The best part is that there is no flame with the close mics because they are right in front of the drum kit just like the close mics of the kit and are in phase with each other because they are side by side close together. It would be interesting to hear this set up in your room!

First, great playing and your studio is amazing! Also impressive that you didn't spill your coffee after falling in the snow! All the examples sound fantastic. If I had to choose I'd probably go with the 414's. Really love how the kick and snare sounded after you added the 1176. No idea what groove you're playing at the end but I know I dig it! :)

Sounded like it may have been an homage to "Scentless Apprentice". I was a bit surprised at the width you got from the medium spaced 414s in omni. Sounded great. A little surprised you didn't call out the opposite imbalance (right shifted image) in the ribbons. Good room sounds. Cool vid.

I have a royer 121 ribbon clone in the closet that sits right behind the door when you close it. The closet is full of random shit lol, but it gives a big sound. Man that thing sounds great.@@grayboxnashville

thanks for watching Mike! The goal of this video was to compare room mic options in isolation, but you're correct that hearing them in the context of close mics and overheads is super important. We'll definitely consider that for future videos!
