It's wrong to call people autistic and assume they have autism. But for future reference, the way that you phrased it with the "there's nothing wrong with Isla" is a bit tactless. There is nothing wrong with autistic people full stop. We're just a little different :) Not hating though EDIT: Also, the problem here isn't really Isla being called autistic, as there would be nothing wrong with that and I'm sure you'd love her just the same if she was. But, there is a problem with the fact that people are calling her autistic as an insult, as a teenage girl at school, I often hear the word "autism" get thrown around as an insult and online and it is so incredibly hurtful. Perhaps with your large platform, you can discourage people from staying stuff like this, not just for Isla (although she's such a sweet girl and you have every right to defend her), but also for the autistic people who do not want to be thought of as these strange aliens. :)

I just want to comment, I dont think theres anything wrong with what Isla said about being autistic, she actually worded it very well and I appreciate her sensitivity around the subject however, Sarah, please dont say things like 'there's nothing wrong with Isla' because having autism doesnt mean theres something 'wrong' with you, you are just different and percieve the world differently. I just want to give you the opportunity to understand that it can be damaging to use connotations such as 'wrong' or 'bad' with autism, autism can be a really cool superpower like Jace's eye superpower, it doesn't mean there is something 'wrong' with him and I noticed you reworded that question I suppose because the question was 'is there something still wrong with Jace's eye' and if thats the case, I hope you can see that by you wanting to reword that question for Jace's sake, then it would be nice for you to not use such connotations with autism or learning difficulties. There would be absolutely nothing 'wrong' with Isla behaviour if she did or didn't have autism and you being so defensive over those 'assumptions' can also be taken negatively as if its offensive to be asked if you are autistic. Another way of looking at it is if someone asked Isla if she was homosexual and then you said 'there's nothing wrong with the way Isla behaves, shes not gay! It really irks me when people ask that' If someone asked me if I'm gay when I'm not, I just say no and leave it at that, because its not offensive and its not a bad thing or wrong thing in any way. I hope you understand how this can come across. Btw the specific part I'm referring to is said at 52:57. Just a heads up for when future referring to developmental disabilities.

I’m so glad you commented on this! As someone with autism and adhd I found it quite alarming the word ‘nothing wrong’ being used in relation to autism! Being autistic doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you! I feel like societies understanding on autism and neurological disabilities is so slim, we’re never going to beat the stigma
@laylaheneaghan1331
@laylaheneaghan1331 Ай бұрын
I agree and I think the fact Isla herself addressed the questions so sensitively with the understanding there isn’t anything wrong with autism and that she didn’t offend those who do have it but she was simply addressing she isn’t shows how kind and emotionally intelligent she is and thoughtful with her words I would say that says a lot in comparison to many other 12 year olds just because she likes Lego and dresses etc doesn’t make her immature she really is lovely
@Kekw79028
@Kekw79028 Ай бұрын
@@laylaheneaghan1331 I really do agree! I think it probably helps that being a female and autistic is more commonly seen on tiktok and so maybe she's had some exposure to autism that doesn't look stereotypical, and therefore can see that being autistic doesn't make you an alien, also the fact that their friend they go to theme parks with is autistic is very worrying that Sarah can make such statements online regarding that something is 'wrong' with autistic people and therefore, maybe Isla also is sensitive and more educated on the matter having a friend who is on the spectrum makes her less judgemental and hold stereotypes against autistic people. I think Isla is fantastic at conveying her emotions and really appreciate her sensitivity around the topic. She's a very wise young girl.
@Kekw79028
@Kekw79028 Ай бұрын
@@CharlotteIvyI completely agree with you! However considering Isla is the next generation for our young people and that she handled the topic so maturely and sensitively makes me think our future generations will beat the stigma. Unfortunately, Sarah still seems to have the mindset of the 70's and therefore still sees autism as an insult and offensive. Those generations won't be mainstream for much longer though! Just look at the acceptance for LGBTQ+ communities. Young women like Isla are going to propel the acceptance of everyone and it's amazing to see such a young person be so wise around sensitive topics.

I do understand the defence for Isla and the comments around autism. But I'm going to come at the comments from another angle. So I've got a 13yr old, who in my eyes I've never thought she had any sort of alternative needs, never saw any clues of being on the spectrum etc, but let me tell you now, its such a massive variety of things that can all add to being neurodivergent or on the spectrum. My girl has small things throughout her life that I would of absolutely said we're just normal quirks. Turns out after hormones hit she saw a few struggles (minor things that all added up to become overwhelming things to her) and she's been with a therapist for anxiety, who's put her forward for autism spectrum diagnosis and adhd. So it's very often no way near as big of differences as we once perceived... she's absolutely a normal 13 year old x

@CarlieMaria28 I mean she's not asked for the check, as she had no clue about it either. It was more she was struggling with anxieties a little and after in depth talks we found she has many little traits of both. It's honestly no way near as obvious as people once thought, nor as obvious as TV and movies make out

Sounds a lot like me growing up, I was just seen as a bit different or “quirky” and I ended up struggling a lot once I hit my teens, I left school early and never successfully returned to education. In my late teens autism was mentioned to me but I never pursued a diagnosis until my daughter was going through the process and I decided to after realising how much she was like me as a child. The understanding of autism in women and girls we have now is only very recently discovered about 10/15 years ago it was believed autism was very rare in girls. Now we know it’s just as common for boys and girls it just presents differently. Not to say that Isla is autistic, only a professional could make that decision but there’s definitely still a lack of understanding of what autism looks like in girls

I love Isla, always have done, but one thing I LOVE about her is she’s not in a rush to grow up. Isla, I’m almost 16 years old and have the same thought. I still dress like I’m an “8 year old” as what other people like to say. I’m also homeschooled and when I was in school I felt the pressure of being like all of the other girls in my class to “fit it” , but since leaving school I’ve seen my true colours. I act how I want, I dress how I want, why? Because I CAN and YOU CAN. It’s so crazy seeing how much peer pressure school has on children, even as young as Isla. Isla, you’re perfect just the way you are. And don’t let ANYONE change that. And I also had an eye patch when I was Jace’s age too. I had a lazy left eye, but never wanted to wear my glasses. But for some reason I just grew out of it and don’t need glasses anymore 12-11 years later. Love you guys so much, been a fan since 2017 ❤

I applaud Isla for being her own person & doing her own thing. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with still wanting to play with dolls or toys at the age of 12! There is no reason to rush growing up because speaking from experience, it isn't that great. I honestly wish I wouldn't have been in a rush to grow up. I remember getting together with my younger cousin to play with her dolls when I was 12 & I loved it. A plus to homeschooling is not having the pressures to fit in & grow up at a faster pace like I experienced in regular school. Isla, you are perfect the way you are! You are a sweet, kind, all around lovely girl. Don't pay attention to the haters.

Wow would never had thought for a minute Isla is autistic (have family members on the spectrum so very familiar with the traits). You do you Isla! My 18 year old daughter has been to one party in her life (wasn't a fan), and also sits home at weekends with her boyfriend (he's almost 19) and plays board games, also build lego, and have even sewn matching pj pants and made teddy bears. Nothing wrong with being who you want to be. I'd rather my kids be themselves than a sheep.

Isla don't grow up to quick just be u. Trust me growing older isn't as much fun. Just continue playing with lego or water till u want to stop. Esme you seem to have grown up so quick but it's great ur a great role model for isla and she can talk to you. Izzy the oldest the more sensible one but every day is different. Follow your dreams. Hi! Just wanted to say if Isla wants to do acting, she defo should do some acting lessons, it’s sort of a hard thing to just jump into when you’re older, since at auditions there’s lots of people who’ve been doing it for ages. If she starts lessons or private lessons she could learn monologues and have a good chance at getting auditions in her future if it’s something she’s interested in! Also it’s fun and good learning experience and confidence building anyway! Best of luck to her though, you can tell she’s a really sweet person!
