With all the talk of the Arena Shooter being dead and gone in 2023, these communities keep this classic multiplayer game mode alive and well and prove the Arena Shooter is THRIVING.

Holy heck - i didn't even realise Prodeus and Dusk had MP - they've been on my wishlist for ages haha. F me. GGs for showing Pad + UrT! Anyone remember TrueCombat:Elite? (every time i watch one of your vids i remember a multiplayer FPS that i spent way too much time playing way back when i had reflexes!)

Arena Shooters, as I see them from my perspective, are like how Real Time Strategy games had been doing a few years ago. A genre that had been at the top of the gamers' minds and lives now kinda left behind by the times. RTS as a genre has been experiencing a new silver age, and many new promising games are about to come out soon. Arena Shooters in comparison, mostly live off of community servers in old games, or remakes/remasters. However, there is still a healthy crop of boomer shooters coming out, and who knows maybe one of them can catch on for a community to play. I had no idea Prodeus actually has populated multiplayer and I plan on checking that out, I love Prodeus.

I've never really played an RTS, but it doesn't really seem like something that I'd stick with. I am completely willing to be proven wrong, though. I used to have zero interest in FPS anything. Now I have over two-thousand hours in Team Fortress 2 over a period nine years. Lol

I genuinely HATE this trend of "wait, your game doesn't have 1,000,000 playres ACTIVE ON MONDAY? Is dead" Sure, you need players to well... play, but the moment a game reaches 100+ players, it's FAR from dead in my opinion. Thanks for this list! Gotta get ready for my next lan party haha

perfect video for what i was looking for, for some reason i was getting endless video essays about how afps are dead and with same points that have been preached to death, when searching for a video like this, i was just looking for good number of options, to show my coworkers and hopefully get them into ctf, we already somtime play cs 1.6.

CocaineDiesel is based on the Warsow source code (Qfusion engine). The bomb gametype was originally developed as a Warsow gametype which quickly took over the rest of team based gametypes other than clan arena. I still can't believe iD didn't implement it in QL. It kicks ass both as competitive and pub gametype.

Nice list, one more quite active shooter worth mentioning is Krunker, pretty unique in its own right since you play it through the web browser

I bought reflex arena because of this video. It's on sale right now for 99 cents. The 4 pack is 3 dollars. 0 players online unless some discord people jump in. I wish more people played.

We still have regulars playing Fadeout: Underground. It fluctuates but we recently had 12 players on CTF mode. It's an arena shooter with some unique movement mechanics and weapons. 2 of us are even working on new maps for it.

Personally Half-Life 2 Deathmatch with custom maps with friends on a LAN has to be one of my favorites. I'm not sure that can be categorized an arena fps though; I just like derping around in that game.

Thanks, that's a great video. What about quake world and quake 2, that still have some communities playing? And what about quake live? Most of q3 fans moved to quake live, including promoders, clanarena players, etc. There's a strong core of players who don't want to switch from quake live to quake champions (myself included). FFA, duel and TDM modes are still quite popular in QL and you can find players to play with. And last but not at least, the quake 3 mod that's most alive today - the DEFRAG. Not too big community, but it has a few hundreds of players, and more than 10k maps! Servers and leaderboards are alive. Regular competitions are organized. Often a new competition once a week! Freestyle sub-community of defrag is in its renaissance now.

I always loved All Out War 2 - a mod for the doom 2 sourceport Zandronum. But it was a while dead, might be still the case, I would need to check again. was a while

I loved diabotical but, at least in europe, there are like 2 matches for wipeout and if you can't join them you have to wait for like 20 minutes and it makes it hard to play because of the lack of people, it's a pity, I hope it ends up in steam or something to revive it somehow

What I dont understand is: Why the boomer shooter devs feel like they have to have retro graphics? Why we cant have a boomer shooter with modern graphics? The problem is not the graphics, we just dont want to play 5min looting and 5min searching for an enemy in call of duty

Serious question: How do all these free games make money? Servers cost money to keep running, so are the devs paying their own money out of passion for the games?

They don't make money. They're made for the love of it. Maybe some have people donate to them but servers are usually hosted by players and not dedicated servers.

I wouldnt call these "going strong" unfortunately. Most of these communities dont have players unless a big enough event can be put together. Maybe a server from time to time with a few people online Quake Champions is the most populated game on this list as of right now.
