In today's video, we go over the results of opening 20 booster boxes of Obsidian Flames and associate values with each pull. With this set very Charizard heavy, a lot of excitement and buzz surrounded its release. However, with some of the most amazing pull rates we have ever seen, Pokemon prices on singles for Obsidian flames have tanked dramatically resulting in booster boxes having very little value associated with them after being opened. How much money did we lose by opening 20 booster boxes of Obsidian Flames? Let's talk about it!

A lot of people (not saying you) are complaining about how much lower the best cards in SV sets are compared to sword and shield. They just don't realize how hard it is to pull the best cards in the SWSH sets. The fact you averaged almost $100 a box in value when the boxes are 110-120 is AMAZING. Whereas in SWSH if you are paying $150 for a box and the only card worth more than the price of the box is one in every 3-4 cases you are gonna be averaging $30-40 boxes all day long and the boxes are more expensive. SV is doing it right haters just gonna hate.

First half sure the trainer gallery sets can’t be topped in my opinion. That’s what makes Paldea Evolved incredible a lot of mid priced cards you felt like you were chasing but also got a ton of great cards. I think going forward they can’t do these 1 Japanese sets for our equivalent this set is a joke I feel they need to do 3 Japanese sets to our equivalent of one

also short sets like this if u like the cards u buy the set, but if u dont u simple skip it to the next, but when they make large sets, like many japanese combined its hard not to like some cards, but with it comes a large numbers of unwanted trash, they make u buy product u dont want and pay extra, doesnt matter if its sealed or single, sealed u will need to open lot more to pull it, and single u will have to pay extra for the good cards to compensate the trash cards the seller is pulling, thats why large sets with few good cards like evolving skies are so high in price, most secerts are less than 30usd compared to the 450usd a booster box

Also in the end of the day ripping packs/boxes are basically gambling for the hits, so no one should really be complaining that they didnt profit

It's also worth noting that these are early sets. The "best" cards in these sets are mostly just normal art rares.

As a day one Pokemon fan that stopped collecting cards in around 2000/1. i recently bought a obsidian flames display and pulled the fancy beautiful charizard card i wanted and a lot of other awesome cards like the pidgeotto full art, this lit the flame inside me again and i started collecting again and also bought some missing cards on ebay cheap, i ´m so excited for 151! So i would say with the pull rates they did everything fine to bring me (and i bet a lot others) back to collecting again.

I think pokemon is doing it correctly for their tcg players. Keeping the pull rates fairly easy to obtain makes very welcoming for new comers when it comes to the tcg. Investors will ultimately make money, but it'll probably take a lot longer. I honestly wouldn't mind if I don't see another Evolving Skies situation happen again.

Just so you know, there are more collectors than actual players that play the game so what do you think when a set like this becomes worthless? 🤣Collectors stop collecting, leave the hobby and move on to other things.

I always say that anyone trying to make money opening is nuts u can can always buy the singles u want ur top 5 is cheaper to buy, in any set than it would cost u too pull the top 5 cards u wanted ripping packs. Pack opening is supposed to be fun and a gamble and u rip what u find affordable than buy singles it's the best way to do it , and than after completing sets, sell doubles and bulk and buy singles but u can't expect to spend less or make money ripping packs. It's just facts.

I love the cheaper prices of cards. One it’s great for making decks, and two, it makes collecting a master set so much cheaper. I can slowly open and wait for the prices to drop to pick up singles.

I love these pull rates as a general lover of pokemon and a collector. It'll be refreshing to buy singles and not have to worry about essentially being told to essentially take out a loan for a card I like.

I'm torn. On one hand it's nice to actually get pulls and not feel ripped off. On the other hand its watered down the value/rarity which is part of the thrill when you finally do get the chases.

This is a very interesting way to look at value. I like it but we need to keep in mind that the only difference between this and paldea evolved for instance is those two art rares that people are drooling over. In reality the average values on this set are more accurate because there are fewer cards skewing the prices. Other sets are actually worth less but because of a few cards appear to be better. I'm really glad you showed all these because I'm two boxes in and was underwhelmed considering how easy everyone says the pulls are. I suppose only wanting the SIR charizard is a bad bar to set even in an easier set. Lol.

If history has proven anything it's that sets like these (cheap box price, cheap single price) are incredible products to hold onto long term. Because the actual market value isn't great, but you get a lot of cool stuff from a scarlet and violet box. And people will want to open this in a few years

I snagged a booster bundle and a 3pack blister at gamestop this weekend for us to open (still waiting for preorders to come). But, pulled the Geeta SIR in the booster bundle and the Charizard IR in the 3pack. Plus a normal Revaroom, Dragonite ex and a Glimmora ex fullart. But, pretty happy with that. It was fun!

ok.. I opened a ETB for obsidian flames and only got 2 hits out of 9 packs. Not including the Charizard. We also did the prerelease event with the battle boxes. 8 packs and got 2 pulls there as well. So far my experience of "good" Pull rates is very different. 17 packs 4 pulls.

Ppl who are opening boxes and not building master sets are missing the point of Pokémon. Just enjoy the hobby. Ripping packs, trading and building master sets is the most fun in my opinion.

Think the issue is for some its not a hobby but an investment and only see the $$$ and not the feeling of completing a set or enjoying the game. The only way for pokemon to fix this is to reduce production. Scarcity will add value to a card which has high pull rates.

@@greathitnick3034 its a wild circular argument to some extent. People are investing in the game pushing up demand and pokemon will continue to print more cards to meed demand. If pull rate ratios stay the same it means the quantity of the rare cards will also increase which but its nature would mean more supply creating cheaper prices so then the market will adjust and prices will fall. Lower pull rates will only happen if they lower the quantity of chase cards which would push up scarcity but that in turn hurts consumers

yea that SIR zard is best art work I've seen in long time I think it will depend on how reprints are done if they keep pull rates same or how much will this set even be printed ...who know never know but no way the zard stay at 100$ the art work alone will carry value best art work I've seen in awhile for zard card

I’m glad the prices are coming down to a reasonable number, always a good feeling pulling a big money card, but having to buy it for a master set after spending so much on packs sucks, makes master sets more realistic for people that aren’t so financially well off

Those employees stealing all the hits from SWSH sets were fired, and maybe now they have better safeguards for big hit cards; that’s what I think is also boosting pull rates from wild SV booster packs.

It's just hilarious to me that people are upset that values aren't shooting to the moon day one. It really goes to show how the alternate art hype era has really warped people's expectations of the PTCG. Y'all really weren't around when people collected Pokémon cards because they just liked them (how shocking that people would like something for what it is) or played the game and low values in modern were common place.

Any time I crack a box of mtg, fab or poke and I dont see a rov of about 70% then I get a bit irked so based on your totals you did fine. Granted, with how easy it seems to pull a zard (especially the ex)...I would have to think these cards will drop in value considerably. Open a box or 3 for fun and keep the rest sealed.

no more for me got 3 booster boxes. first pack out of it all i got a gold charizard. The next two boxes were trash and mostly off centered. I honestly started to think the sellers were opening the boxes and taking the charizards then resealing what was left after they hit a zard. Until I saw this video and I guess im just unlcuky. but man $350 for one $38 zard is lame.
