I knew my Porsche 911 repair bill wasn't going to be pretty, but it was only after I got my 993 back that I was able to decide whether or not it was worth the cost.
In this Porsche 911 repair bill video, I share with you the following information about the repairs I had done to my Porsche 993, including:
- Exactly how much I paid for an "engine out service" on my Porsche 911 993 Carrera Coupe
- Exactly what was included that made this Porsche 911 repair bill what it was
- Strategies for dealing with an engine out repair and how you should decide what to do while the engine is out...including how much it will drive your Porsche 911 repair bill up
- How much a Porsche 911 repair bill should be just to have the engine dropped
- A link to a video I did covering my air cooled mechanic talking about the engine while it was out of the car
- Whether or not I would recommend putting this much money into a Porsche 911 repair
- What the clutch feels like since I've had it replaced
- Whether or not you should put a 3 spoke 996 steering wheel in your Porsche 993
- Whether the Rennline magnetic cell phone holder is worth the money

About My Channel:
Rennthusiast (formerly Bavarian Enthusiast TV) is for the most part a Porsche 911 channel centering on experiencing air cooled Porsches, but will also feature other vintage, analog vehicles I add to the collection. The channel is the result of my deep passion for air cooled Porsches, my interest in the air cooled Porsche community, my obsession with modding, improving, buying and selling cars in general and my desire to put myself out there on KZfaq and share these passions with other enthusiasts.
As I continue to build this channel, I'll be adding more cars to the mix, and will likely branch out beyond the German sports car genre as is the case with this video. Why? Because I LOVE cool collector cars and as my interests morph and change, so will this channel.
As of the date of this video, the collection includes a 1995 Porsche 911 993 Coupe, a 1986 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Coupe, a 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo, a 2000 Toyota Landcruiser and....a 1993 Toyota Landcruiser FZJ80 (no they're not German but they've been bucket list vehicles for me so they're now in the collection).

Just saw this video yesterday, and watched a bunch of your inspiring videos since. I have a 997 and want to add a 993 to my (world’s smallest collection) but I have been strongly considering a 964 or 930 so, I’m very interested in what you’re doing. Also, your presentation skills are great and the honesty shines through! Keep doing it! 👍. I’m subscribed with the bell! 🙂

I was getting ready for you to say at least $10k for the whole repair so honestly I think that was a good deal on your end. Adding in just 2 more grand to have the engine out with a lot of refresh parts is definitely worth doing. Your car looks and sounds great! Lots of folks are fearing that our 911 will go down in price in the midst of this crisis but it doesn't bother me one bit. I'm keeping mine forever and handing it down to my son when I'm too old to drive it.

I think it’s a safe bet that values will fall. While I’m not a pro analyst or anything, it only makes sense. That said, the values are largely irrelevant to me. I’ll be keeping my 993 and the 3.2 for a long time to come so not really concerned. As always, thanks for watching. 👍🏼

New clutch, new exhaust, new suspension, brakes and lots of other minor repairs modifications and regular maintenance. Worth every penny tough. Ha! This is why I do 90% of the maintenance myself. Wait until you have to change the two ballast resistors on either side of the front fenders, HVAC and oil cooler. BTW, if it's a true 1995 (pre obdii) a rusted, crappy SAI valve will NOT trigger a CEL. My 993 is a 1996 and I change that little bugger every 30,000 miles. Tip from me: coat every rubber gasket, or o-ring, with Moly 111, e.g. during oil/filter changes, valve cover gaskets, etc. Also, once a week, peruse fleabay for parts that have come off old stock or old 993's. For instance relays are very expensive! And stop pressing the trip-button below the odometer. There's a tiny planetary gear in the speedo that will ruin your day.

Water cooled vs air cooled. That’s the question. For many, the budget really drives the decision. You can get a clean 996 911 base Carrera for like mid-$20’s, I think. Then again, you can get a clean 993 turbo for like $130,000. A new GT3 for like $250,000 or more. But if you haven’t been able to tell already, I am partial to the older, air cooled cars. I am doing a new series comparing my 2 911’s to eachother. That might help your decision making process. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7SRhbimx5y4aXU.html

I own a 95'. I fortunately have the time and a lift in my garage, and DIY 99% of repairs on it. I pulled the motor and did most of what your mechanic did. I think I spent close to $2K in parts alone. My guess was $6K. I think you got a decently priced service for what they did. I would say it probably runs better and smoother because I bet they re-times the cams. Curious were the plugs and wires done as well? Nice car! I'm sure you are enjoying it! I have the same MY02's and steering wheel on mine too. Light and gorgeous additions from the 996 cars!

I had a 997.2 C4S before I fell for the air cooled 911’s, and no doubt the look of the rear end of those cars is 2nd to none. I do still have 2 BMW’s (a 1970 BMW 2002 and a track-built e36 M3) but both will be sold at some point soon. Appreciate your sharing the costs. Based on experience with my 964, the bill seems reasonable. I know it hurts to write the check; I’ve been there too. I also agree that even though your wallet hurts, there is a great sense of satisfaction in knowing that you had it done right. A great mechanic shares enough of the process with his / her clients, that they understand their car more and more as time goes on. I think psychologically, the more you have done to and learn about your car, more it feels like an extension of you as a person.

I work at a Porsche Specialist and $5,700 for ANYTHING on a 993 is a bargain... get ready for a top end rebuild on it in the next couple of years- that will set you back $15- 20k. When your check engine light comes on and it is burning a lot of oil- you'll know it's time. The valve guides wear out very early on these cars- it's a well known issue- and will need to be replaced- that means the top end needs to come apart- it's time consuming and expensive. BTW- the engine removal isn't expensive (although specialist like to act like it is)- a competent spealisit can pull a motor and gear box out in under 35 minutes- and back in in about the same time. It's the time while it's out getting through the layers of components that gets expensive and the parts have become astronomically expensive.

Great price for engine out anything. Plus just imagine if it was a Ferrari 355, many services require engine out and would cost 3x that (don’t ever get one, you’ll have more in repairs than the car, and that’s even with them appreciating to the 60-80k lower end now (used to be $40-60k years ago )) anyway the 993 will always be sought after and relatively reliable vs alternatives

Nice video. Had a 993...then moved to a 996tt with track focus (suspension, brakes, CAE shifter, gt3 buckets, etc......blueprinted.....). At some point, it cost so much to run that I decided - what do I care about....the RWB 996tt or being able to not worry. Moved to a Subaru STI with a 7y/100k warranty....again, ohlins/brakes. It is a 4.0 s car not a 2.9s car - that is stock....with lighter wheels..... I can park in on the street....use it in snow...and not care about it..... P cars are great cars.....they are just expensive and very much attract too much negative attention (who hat rich “prXck...” sort of stuff). It is nice parking at a middle of nowhere shop and not worrying about the car..... 993 engines, from my experience are great, but need to get rebuilt at some point ...seemed like 100k miles......

Well I seen this coming, a converted BIMMER guy, we are pleased... lol. Well truth be known I had the same life, still have a soft spot for a BMW, beautiful machines. I sat in a 997 and the Z4M and its family was in the used car lot and auto trader. You will have to make a vlog on your true feelings with your move and why. My short story I saw this 997 parked at the front door in a used Ford car lot. I always wanted a 993, but unaffordable. Drove in, the plates were off, so I sat in it, sales came running out..we haven't cleaned it up yet sir.. I smiled and gave him my credit card, I will take it. Much later..I bought a mint Black 2008 997 with lobster claws, naturally aspirated, 6 speed Carrera S with 18,000 km all original, untouched and mostly stored. from a gentleman who just traded it in for a Ford diesel truck.. lady luck. Man wish I had a mechanic like Charles around. I am happy you did all the updates mechanical repairs etc.. to the 993, you won't regret it. The car that was suppose to be a daily driver..lol, you won't regret the dollars spent, I am sure you can tell the difference in the drive and handling.. your investment will only grow $$. Porsche has 50 plus years of racing history and wins.. it's a true track car built for the road.. This channel will only grown..kudos, very proud of what you are creating.. we knew you could leave all the unsure feelings behind... the freedom is yours Will.. have fun, create and enjoy.

I do most of the work for my own 996 the past 2 years (in college so I'm on a pretty tight budget.) I would say the best way to do it is make a big ass list of stuff to do for the engine and replace everything you can. (For ex 996 aos is a part I tend to always replace if I have a budget.) I had the engine out 2 times (first time was when I just got it and it wasn't running, second time was the air to water cooler was leaking badly so had to drop that.

Charles is a bargain. I owned a 993 RS (yep the real thing). No AC or radio, rear seats deleted etc. I bought a full set of maintenance manuals and did my own maintenance; worth every penny. The car was fabulous on the road but a real handful in heAvy traffic. Sell your wheel and replace with Light Weight Flywhheel and proper racing clutch. LSD 80% also worthy. Send your ÉCU to Manthey Racing. My car made 330 at the clutch. Italian cars with 400 HP always behind :-). German horses are obviously bigger…

A lot of this stuff could've easily been done on your own although of course it's probably a pain to put in all those exhaust shield screws while the engine is in the car. Thanks for sharing your insight. Yep, I totally get what you’re saying. I’ve done some projects in the past (bushings, fluid changes) but have never really had the patience, skills and knowledge to do this kind of work, especially dropping an engine out of a 911. Here’s a video overview of the book if you’re interested: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nK6TepqBydTQe58.html Honestly, I have concluded I’m more of a driver than a mechanic. Pretty reasonable. Most of what you did is pretty standard and needed to keep the car going for thousands of miles. It’s a Porsche, you need to pay to play. I think many people buy fancy cars and don’t calculate in the carrying cost and those are the people you don’t want to buy from. The guy with all the shop records from New is the seller you want.

I had 2007 997 TT with Ceramic Brakes and got rid of it after 5 years / with 27k miles which I regret to this day. $5,700 is the pocket change compare to all the happiness your 993 will give you.. The good thing is you will be able to drive the car for 100,000 miles with no issues. On labor you can save an insane amount of money by doing it yourself though. However most people don't have the free time a 16 year old with a dad who owns a porche has lol. Most people save $5,000 on labor. However with the cost of the tools needed, it will probably cost the same. However once you get the tools you don't need to buy any more lol.

993 is not so expensive to maintain, you have spent money that previous owners should have paid to preserve the car. The clutch needs 2000 miles, and then you will understand perfection in the gear change. If Porsche were to make a 993 today, it would cost over 250000 USD.

That was not a big bill, try a 915 rebuild on an older 911, or an upper end rebuild and head stud repair. Talk to use when you have $20-30K in repairs. These cars are so over rated, the fact the everything on these is x3 the price it should be is insane. Sadly most Porsche people hold high repair costs as a badge of nobility, and chalk it up to "Porsche Character". An equally well maintained Corvette is 9/10 -10/10's the performance for 1/3 the cost or less. Before you suggest that I don't have a 911, think again. I loved Porsche's before owning one, they are stupidly expensive for what they are.

I've had my 993 Carrera 2 for 8 years. I recently had engine and gearbox out to have all the seals done as I had some leaks - nothing bad but the work had to be done at some stage. I followed the same logic - "whilst the engine's out, is there anything else that needs attention". It's reassuring when it comes back and everything is right. The 4 wheel alignment wasn't cheap but absolutely necessary.

Thanks for sharing this experience. Just curious if you are a member on any Porsche forum, or even club? ie. Rennlist etc etc. I ask this because a lot of what you paid for to have fixed shocked me as they are easy to do your self and helps you know your car better. I was really shocked you had someone fit the steering, phone holder, heat shield etc etc. As you were expecting a significantly lower bill, this could have easily been achieved. Can I suggest to you Bentleys Porsche 911 Carrera Service Manual 1995 - 1998. It is an absolute must for any serious 993 owner, that's if you value your wallet and bank balance. Also try spend sometime on forums, join the Porsche club, Rennlist, hell even on youtube or else you will grow more white hairs very quickly.

Anyway, $5700 is about the price of one of Jeb's watches . lol.... Greg

Not inexpensive for sure but I do think it adds value to the car (in a normal market without the current Coronavirus pandemic and associated economic issues). Certainly not dollar for dollar, but it’s worth something, not that I’m gonna sell it. This is work anyone who knows these cars would want done. And, as I mentioned in the video, I am now not hesitant to pound on it now that I have had it thoroughly gone through. We basically did everything. In fact, I’m gonna run it in a DE event at VIR once we can get through this pandemic. Thanks for your consistent engagement. 👍🏼 And $150/hour for standard BMW work is why they call it a “stealership”
