Huge roads do not have to be huge barriers for cyclists. This video shows an example in Utrecht in the Netherlands. A large roundabout was constructed in this road in 1971. The original design included separated cycle paths from the beginning. Making a convenient and safe crossing of this road possible for cyclists.

All town planners Worldwide need to watch your videos! In the UK, I think it will take one town to take the step of implementing Dutch-inspired infrastructure. Then, when everyone sees how well it works, there would be a snowball effect! These videos have really opened my eyes.

In the US, crossing on-ramps or off-ramps as a pedestrian or cyclist is asking for a deathwish. The majority of ramps are slip lanes that allow traffic to flow continuously, but typically disregard any other kind of traffic in their paths. I don't ever see US cities changing these slip lanes to justify pedestrian and cyclists, especially for on-ramps. Very nice video, thank you for sharing how the Dutch approach these intersections.

Yes pedestrians and cyclists are almost always separated in the Netherlands. I will see what I can do about a video.

Wow - such intelligence. I would give anythng to live in a country like that. Your country is beautiful. The US has inlelligence - in military weapons design - They spend 60% of our buget on military and have removed almost all money from walking and bicycle funds. Many of the people here act like our armies on the roads... Nice video - Thank you

I know that and it is also why the approach angle of the roads is different and the cycle paths are not circular but straight. But these technical details do not stand in the way of the overall story I believe. The average road user does not notice a difference between a roundabout and a traffic circle especially since who-goes-first is regulated by the lights.

I noticed how pedestrians were kept safe as well. It seemed as though pedestrians are also seperated from cyclists, and have their own space. Is that common? Do they seperate pedestrians and cyclists as well in The Netherlands? If so, could you do a video on this?

Yup. Pedestrians and cyclists are (almost) never sharing. By default, the rules say bikes share with cars (though not usually on roads that big), and the cycle tracks/paths/etc are taking the cyclists off the roads. Usually, the first thing that appears on a road (as it goes from quiet one lane country road to inner city busy road and thus gets less safe for all to share one piece of asphalt) is pavement for pedestrians, and then after that cycling infrastructure appears. And then after that you get a median.

Another aspect about lights from what I've seen and read is that at many intersections, there are no stoplights on the far side, only nearside ones. So cars that pass the solid stop line will not be able to see the light signal. I've read that this is also common in Germany and parts of France. And coupled with no- right-turn-on-red, you don't have motorists perpetually blocking the pedestrian crossing.

You may see lights on the far side of a junction in Europe, but they're far less common, and you'll ONLY see them as a repetition of lights at the stop line. The rule in EU is that you cannot pass a red light under any circumstance if it's red and on your right hand side. So if they placed lights on the far side of a junction, by law you'd have to stop for that light, if it was on your right side, thus blocking the junction. You will sometimes see lights on the far side of a larger junction here. But it will only be placed as a repetition of the legal lights at the stop line, and will then only be placed on the left of the road or on the middle reservation if there is one. But since it is placed on the left side of the road, it has no legal "power" so it only works as repetition and clarification, and you could legally ignore it...

You call the junction a roundabout in your voiceover, but technically it's a traffic circle (verkeersplein). A roundabout would be marked with a D1 sign (the traditional round blue sign with the circular arrows) and would afford traffic already on the roundabout priority over entering traffic. This junction functions otherwise.

I used to cycle to work and back 4 times a day across Leicester (England) in the 1960's when there were no cycle lanes, I must have been mad and survived by a miracle, i had plenty of close calls and was only knocked off once (not serious)

In Australia its against a law to provide signal noise for blind persons with flashing lights to assist guide dogs. Its violation of transport accessibility laws not providing them. I am so shocked been to few countries that never have sounds on these signals! UK, USA and Hong Kong are so guilty of this

Is there a light within the circle that stops cars from leaving the circle when the bicyclists get a green? If not, what about the design prevent cars from leaving the circle when bicycles cross the car output roads?
@Michiel_de_Jong

Yes there is. Look at 0:20 (left-up) You can see two stop lines crossing the road. At both lines are traffic lights for cars. Moreover the waiting or crossing cyclists are in the line of view of the car drivers.
