Huge thunderstorm with a LOT of lightning, thunder & the occasional very loud thunder in Michoacán México on August 18, 2021. There were actually 2 thunderstorms during the day, and both produced very loud thunder. But the title was already too long to include both. The first thunderstorm, while close, didn't affect us directly, and even if it did, the second thunderstorm took the spotlight as it lasted for a while and produced a lot of lightning as it slowly made its way towards us.
Timestamps:
First thunderstorm: 0:31
Loud thunder: 1:14
Very loud thunder: 13:57
Very loud thunder: 16:39
Very loud thunder: 17:35
The second thunderstorm (the one advertised in the title and thumbnail): 28:16
Distant lightning and thunder: 31:28
Lightning strike, also the lightning and thunder is getting closer: 40:28
Thunder is starting to get more constant: 46:11
The thunder is constant now and the lightning very frequent: 53:09

This is the perfect storm for watchers like me. The storm's approach and then passing overhead. This is how storms should be recorded. No talking just the sound of thunder and rain. Listen with headphones for an even better experience

It's amazing you got the entire storm from start to finish. It seems like whenever I think a good storm is on the way it peters out before it gets to me. Most of my close loud crashing storms caught me by surprise in the middle of the night.

Same. Where do you live? I have found the heat island effect of the city I live in to be horrible for storm watching lol! We will have massive storms with half dollar hail heading straight for us, then the storm splits in two around us, leaving only some light showers and distant thunder :-/ (I mean, I'm glad to not get hail of course, but I'd love to have all the other storms go over us!)

Some of the best thunderstorm content out there, with the build up before the storm really sets in, i get the feeling i am there with you. A decent set of Sennheiser headphones really puts the cherry on the cake

I just played this magnificent video again via my great Hifi equipement. It is so stunning, not to say hallucinating! At what time period of the year the frequency/chance of such mega great, severe and long lastig storms is most great? Many thanks for your reaction!

During the summer months. So from June through September you'll have a greater chance of experiencing such storms, especially since thunderstorms form in a daily basis during that time period.

This is great! Monsoon storms are so different from storms up north. They move so slow and last so long. Here lightning is close overhead for a few minutes at most, then it's quickly moving away. It has a tendency to happen late at night too. I did get a storm that fairly constant loud thunder for couple hours on Sep 2, 2018. It was between 4 and 6 am so I was too sleepy to film more than about 30 minutes. I also got some really close strikes late at night on Aug 27, 2018, but again I was too tired to get it all. I recorded about 3.5 minutes then went back to bed. Also didn't have a view of the sky due to living in the trees back then.

Sometimes when storms do last too long late during the night (any storm that happens during the time period of 1-4 am) I just leave the tripod by istelf and I go to bed. Sometimes I even take some short naps. The downside though, is that the video I leave recording ends up being longer than an hour (If I dont wake up), sometimes even 2 hours. It basically records until the battery dies. And the only decent footage ends up being the first 10-20 minutes. So I end up with a heavy video in which only a very small percent of it is useful lol. I only go to sleep when the lightning isn't as close anymore though. Also, not all storms move that slow. I'm assuming that this particular storm was moving slow due to the lack of strong winds as the storms that do move very quickly here tend to bring strong winds. But I do think that most storms are in the slower side. Especially during the dry season (November-May). During those months, we still get some thunderstorms here and there, but they are way weaker than their summer counterparts. And even when we do get strong storms or hailstorms, they do move quite slow and lack wind. The fastest storm I've ever witnessed was on April 15, 2015. Unfortunately I did not record it since I was still scared of lightning. I still get frustrated with myself for not recoding it. It was easily the best thunderstorm I've ever experienced. It was very disorganized. I haven't seen a thunderstorm like that again and it wasnt even during the wet season. The day as it went: At 10 am we got a brief shower. Then at 11 the sun came out and all of the clouds in the sky started to dissipate. At 12 pm the sky was completely clear and the sun was quite warm that day. At 1 pm cumulonimbus clouds started to form in the distance. At 2 pm a thunderstorm formed in the distance but it was still quite far. Now here comes the interesting part. You know how thunder sounds when it is still far enough to barely be able to hear it right? Well, whenever that thunder that far away was heard, the ground I was standing in shook a little, which was odd since I had never seen something like that. Anyway, at 2:30 pm the storm arrived. First came heavy rain that lasted for about a minute. Then everything went silent. No sound of rain, or wind or even thunder was heard. After about another minute of silence, very close lightning started to strike with high frequency. The loudest thunder I've ever heard in my life to be exact! Why? Well, every single lightning that struck close to us that day was positive. So right after hearing the first positive thunder, it started raining very hard again, this time the rain coming down from a different direction. It again lasted for about a minute and was then followed by another minute of silence (well silence minus the thunder). After that minute, a lot of hail began to fall, for, you guessed it, about another minute. This time though, after the hail stopped, my mother and I gathered the courage to look out the window, just to see that there was a funnel cloud coming down right on top of us. And it was quite close to the ground. It almost touched the top of my pine tree. It was surreal watching how the pine tree has splitting and how the top branches of the tree were moving in a jumping jack kind of way, with the branches almost touching the ground every time it opened. Fortunately, that didn't last long and the funnel cloud dissipated. The thunder continued for 5 more minutes, sounding further and further each time. So after those 5 minutes, when thunder was far enough I went outside to watch the storm (I forgot to add that those were the darkest clouds i've ever seen). Surprisingly, the storm was out of sight in 5 minutes. I've never seen a storm move that quickly since! *sorry for such a big comment*
