@@windycityliz7711 Agreed. It is only tangentially about gender identity ... by virtue of the fact that people who have a sex generally also have a gender identity. If you cannot withhold (for example) needed hormone treatments from a cis man or woman, it would be discriminatory to withhold them from a trans man or woman.

@@arjaygee For at least 20 years now women (by sex) have been denied HRT for menopausal symptoms which can be severe - because of short and long term health risks. Even though it helps them. Denying a man (by sex) the same hormones but at 4 times the levels and for life would not seem to be discriminatory but protective.

I'm pretty liberal in almost all of my beliefs. But I do believe that gender identity belongs to the person...not their parents, not doctors, not politicians. So I would not want any authorization of sex/gender altering surgery before the age of 18, and then on the determination of the person / adult himself/herself. (I can imagine a sick parent who wanted a girl insisting that her son look, dress, act like a girl. Lots of sick people out there, and I wouldn't want some poor child burdened with their parent's sick decision.) That doesn't mean there should be discrimination against youth who want or need other health care related to their gender or gender identity.

If plastic surgery is covered is should not matter, why you are getting it. If such a thing is considered beyond the scope of a health plan, then no. Unless law is passed to have a special carve out for such surgeries it should not be covered. The whole thing is fringe, if the activist wanted it, they could fund it.

There is a significant difference between discrimination and requiring provision of medical services where standards of care are not established or where contradictory evidence exists, as is true for medicalized "trans care". This is why liberal European countries have dialed back such care and even banned it for children. U.S. should pay attention.

If by standards of care you mean “clinical guidelines,” they _are_ established in the U.S., and in general, they are less aggressive than the European standards I have read about (UK, France, Sweden, Norway).

@@arjaygee I can't imagine a more aggressive "standard of care" for trans youth (children) than that in the U.S., where affirmative care only is basically required - in a for profit system. Those "standards" were established by ignoring questions, disallowing debate, and neglecting long term patient follow up or research - far from the normative process. Example: In at least one state adult men were able to get cross sex hormones from a PA (no DR visit required let alone an endocrinologist) in a virtual visit, while women going through menopause cannot get HRT because it is too dangerous. Liberal European countries have redrawn their standards over the last few years because of evidence that their previous standards were harmful - they looked at the outcomes and the science. The US should do the same.

There is an enormous amount of important information missing here. There is the reason for discrimination and then there's what's being denied. It may be the case that those things are closely related but it is fundamental to know these details. Discriminating based on gender identity is in the first category and denying gender reassignment coverage is in the second. The Gorsuch decided case said that you cannot fire a person for being homosexual. If Harry Litman wants to claim that this new case is like that one, he needs to explain why. Just saying it is LGBT-related is not good enough.

Gender reassignment is a really big deal.Even when you’re an adult and very sure, it can be a difficult and often painful thing. Professional med and psych personnel being there to support people through everything connected to the transition is vitally important - and damned expensive!
