The UK's working-age benefits bill is set to reach £100 billion for the first time this year, driven by an increase in disability claims since the lockdown. Welfare payments, including universal credit, housing subsidies, and disability benefits, are projected to rise by nearly 30% in real terms to £130 billion by the end of the decade, according to Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) forecasts.
Estimates from the DWP indicate that the cost of working-age benefits will reach £100.9 billion in the current financial year. Payments experienced a more than 20% surge in the year following the 2020 lockdown, climbing from £78.9 billion to £95.6 billion in 2020-21. This increase was attributed to a rise in claims related to mental health and muscular pain.
This news comes amid an unemployment crisis, with official figures revealing that a record 2.8 million people are not actively seeking employment, citing illness as the reason.
Peter Cardwell speaks with communications officer Reem Ibrahim and CEO of Disability Direct, Amo Raju.

I think Lockdown did an enormous amount of damage to peoples mental well being. We are social beings and making it a crime to seek human company was a huge mistake.

I AM ON UNIVERSAL CREDIT AND LOOKING FOR FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME WORK, AND THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I FACE IS THAT EVERY VACANCY THAT I APPLY FOR HAS ABOUT 20 ON AVERAGE ALSO APPLYING FOR THAT VACANCY AND THEREFORE THE EMPLOYER WILL GET THE BEST PERSON WITH THE EXPERIENCE OR QUALIFICATION FOR THAT VACANCY. I DO NOT DRIVE OR HAVE A CAR, SO I NEED TO USE NOTTINGHAM PUBLIC TRNSPORT BUS OR TRAM TO GET AROUND.I HAVE NOT WORKED SINCE MAY 2022 AND FINDING IT DIFFICULT AT MY AGE OF 58 WITH SOME HEALTH ISSUES IN FINDING FULL-TIME OR PART-TIME WORK.

The NHS needs to be reformed. We need less drugs and more nutrition, detox(sauna), funcitonal medicine testing protocols: the standard blood tests are not up to snuff. I bet we would see a huge increase in health if the NHS gave out liver and onions or cod liver oil as opposed to drugs. Pharmaceutical drugs are just a money spinner, we would be spending less money if we actually cured people and prevented people getting sick.

Of course it's increasing, you are letting people into the country on mass who have no intention of ever working. My question is, what happens when the jobless far outweigh the workers? Who's going to pay into the system so everyone can get out?

IR35 ended my working career in the UK. Tax bill doubled. Refused to pay such huge levels of tax. Now do short contracts as a consultant in UAE. Can’t pay tax for the Government to waste it on benefits to those not genuine, illegal migrants and net zero lunacy.

Spot on. The jobs need to be listed as a "priority" in the UC system. No excuses. No Games. No going to different job sites and making the user jump through more hoops.

In terms of the waste of human potential, people who choose benefits in preference to work usually lack qualifications or skills needed for well paid or interesting work otherwise they would probably choose to work.

Part of the problem is that even working 40 hours a week isn't enough to pay bills and buy food. Personally i can recommend setting up your own business but it is hard work.

There are some people with disabilities who want to work but their disabilities prevent them from doing so. Some have to get cabs to hospital appointments because they can't use public transport and free transport arranged by the NHS doesn't always turn up. Working from home may be okay for those who know how to operate a computer but what about those who are not techno savvy? How can they learn how to use a computer when they can't leave the home often (due to their disabilities) to attend a course to learn. I don't think the government has considered this.

I totally agree with a few people in the comments working full time does not benefit workers at all with how much everything costs so why wouldn't people stay on the benefit system, there actually is no benefit to working apart from having some change to treat yourself. I work 2 jobs Full time and Part time, I do 90 to 100 hours a week and that still keeps me above water to treat myself more than most. the economy has gone down the toilet and tax payers don't benefit at all so I don't blame people staying on benefits. I also see this in the jobcentre everyday first hand how people abuse the system and it's embarrassing how some of them are doing better than us, I seen one guy and I can not make this up, he parked with a Tesla outside Stockport Jobcentre, like seriously, do you know how much it costs to insure a bloody Tesla?

I'm currently out of work due to a sudden illness last summer, having worked In a variety of skilled jobs over a 33 year period. I can honestly say that it's never been as difficult as now to find a meaningful job. Can't get a sniff at things I've got lots of experience in and at nearly 50, try doing something new 😂 yes there might be a million vacancies out there, but a lot of 8 -10 hour jobs. No good really😢

I had to leave the NHS due to disability, as much as the law states that the disabled have rights to work, a lot of businesses get around it because we have to have limited or altered hours and workplace safety put in place. But you're right, if a single mum works 16 hours, you actually get more benefits, I used to do that as I was a full time carer too.

Amzimg isnt it? Brits being called lazy and fat and all on benefits the last couple of days...yet if you go the UK Gov Unemployment and Ethnicty page...you will find that the white UK group has been the consistently lowest group of unemployed ...and the stats go back to 2004 (and white is still the largest group so go figure) asian as in pakistani and bangladeshi are by far the largest group on benefiis. Dont forget that the population has risen in the last couple of decades as well and with net legal migration reaching 700k last year....who do you think will be paying for the pensions for them and the families they bring across in the future....jobs with wages that people can really live on , would help...how many of these benefits are having to be supplemented by housing beenfits or working credtis...which is in effect, subsidising the employer...cant pay decent wages..you shouldnt be employing folks

Ok, what Reen can know about real world and what is her experience (or lack of) to lecture others? Straight from LSE to TV channels and now Institute of Economic Affairs (which is not a real scientific Institute anyway... but a research company for hire)... Also, that million or so vacancies - not real number as many vacancies are advertised by multiple job agencies, better paid positions are already filled but still advertised due to legal requirements, plus a lot of companies have "fake" jobs only to show to competitors and to the market/stock exchange that we are expanding, we are hiring, we are on upward trajectory (sham vacancies)

The number of people who became ill through long covid and the vaccination injuries, its no wonder that the number people on benefits has massively increased since covid. Disabled people would on the whole love to work, but employers make it difficult for them. Despite laws that were made to try to make it easier for them to go to work. Other employees also make it hard for them, there is no sympathy or understanding given to disabled people. Employers expect them to do exactly the same job as none disabled. If the disabled take more time off work due to illness firms treat them exactly the same way that they treat non disabled. Disiplinary hearings, sending them to see drs to see if they are just pulling sickies. It becomes really hard and worse still if the disability is not easily seen. No the laws have not made a level playing field. Employers pay lip service to these laws while treating disabled people and the laws with no respect.

1 million vacancies 5 million out of work. No vacancies still 4 million out of work. Still a massive problem So what is to be done ? Growth in the economy needed to increase jobs but why import 740.000 ? They become the workers while we still have 5 million non workers. Can these people not count on this programme.

Im sorry but he's solution is not just the answer The work from home jobs needs to be listed in the UC system and be offered to people as "priority". None of this going to multiple confusing job listing sites. Work Coaches should be listing the jobs for the claimants and UC should have access to the jobs first as a priority. It should be easy and straightforward and it should clearly list the hours and salary. And non of this "must have prior experience" or "must have a degree". It should allow "training on the job". If they don't do something like this nothing is going to work and it will get worse and worse. And there should be a period where they can take a job for a trail without losing their benefits.
