Hugh Laurie meets the man who brought the Blues to Britain, jazz trombonist Chris Barber.
Filmed at Abbey Road Studios London.
Donald Christopher 'Chris' Barber (born 17 April 1930, Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire, England) is best known as a jazz trombonist. As well as scoring a UK top twenty trad jazz hit, he helped the careers of many musicians, notably the blues singer Ottilie Patterson, who was at one time his wife, and vocalist/banjoist Lonnie Donegan, whose appearances with Barber triggered the skiffle craze of the mid-1950s and who had his first transatlantic hit, "Rock Island Line", while with Chris Barber's band. His providing an audience for Donegan and, later, Alexis Korner, makes Barber a significant figure in the British rhythm and blues and "beat boom" of the 1960s.

I have no memory of being more grateful to anyone for posting something to KZfaq than I am here. Two of my all-time heroes, actually playing together - and I didn't even know they knew each other. Thank you so much - you've made my day!

Possibly my first introduction to jazz trombone was hearing my dad's Chris Barber records. Thanks for sparking something, Mr Barber!

The first vinyl record I bought was a 45 rpm of Chris Barber. One side was a title by the name of Petite Fleur. The flip side was Birthday something.I think I still have it in my collection.

Hugh, as a looong time trombone player, I knew you were my kind of guy when Wooster played trombone, holding every note to the bitter end. Loved it!

As a Blues purrist I was very impressed with High Laurie's two Blues albums. His arrangements with suburb guests musicians at its best. Unfortunate didn't get a lot of publicity and/or air play.

Just another little thing about Chris Barber. He sponsored several top British Cyclo Cross riders in the sixties and seventies, including my then hero Kieth Mernickle from Kingston. A propper champ. Funny to think the punk bands, who played at Chris's '100' club, made there contrabution to British cycling!
