HughesNet vs Viasat Review - Between COST and SPEED, who's the best?

Today we're reviewing the two titans of satellite internet: HughesNet and Viasat (formerly Exede). I was originally going to do a review just of HughesNet, and then one for Viasat. And maybe I still will. But it turns out it’s really hard to talk about one without talking about the other. So we’re going to go over the strengths and weaknesses of each today. We’ll talk about price and speed -- those are the two most important categories -- and we’ll also touch on data caps and customer service.
----------
Viasat vs HughesNet - the full review:
www.reviews.org/internet-serv...
Which satellite provider is best?:
www.reviews.org/internet-serv...
----------
Here's the bottom line: I love that HughesNet keeps things simple. There are no games with introductory pricing, their plan structure is easy to understand, and that’s all good. If simplicity and transparency are worth a lot to you--first of all, I don’t blame you. If 25 Mbps is enough speed for you, HughesNet might work! But with all the necessary caveats in place, I’d generally point people toward Viasat. It’s got a better variety of plans to choose from, so you’re more likely to find something that fits your style. And on top of that, Viasat can be cheaper in absolute terms (although it can also be much, much more expensive) and it’s often cheaper on a per-Mbps basis.

A quick note on introductory pricing: In the video I said that HughesNet doesn't really do the introductory pricing thing...And then after I filmed this they started an introductory price promotion going right now on their site for some locations, through March 31st of this year. Maybe you'll see it, maybe you won't. My point still stands, it's just, uh...watered down a bit!

We have viasat and it's mediocre at best. We pay $138/mo Little to no connection if it's raining, snowing, or thick cloud cover. We've cut tree limbs way back to ensure better connection with little improvement. We feel it needs to be adjusted but we're told it's aiming correctly. We pay for 150GB per month but when we use up 70% of our data they throttle the speed back so much that is practically impossible to use without blowing a gasket lol. AT&T has been installing fiber optics in our area and the junction box is across the road from us, we are just waiting for it to finally behind available and then we will be dropping viasat like a hot potato.

Correction…it’s not AT&T it is Swift. Either way at the time i wrote this it was not offered to us yet but was a couple of months (Aug 22) ago and we were fortunate enough to be accepted into the Starlink residential plan and it’s been amazing and continues to improve. We did cut ties with viasat Jan of 21 because no other satellite service can compare. The swift fiber optics is more per month than we currently pay for Starlink and we invested a lot in the equipment so decided to just stick with it since it works so well for us anyway.

I have hughesnet. I am completely dissatisfied. It's slow, inconsistent and you dont ever know what to expect. Phone network internet is usually much crisper. Sometimes you get great speed, and that is a treat, but mostly it's slow. And you use your data quickly. Its just not worth it. Use a phone network service instead. It sucks and feels like 1997 dial up sometimes...and you're stuck for 2 years

I told my sister who lives in NC i would teach her how to trade the forex market we call on discord because fb sucked... she sounded like a broken robot i told her how shit her net is. I ask her who her provider is and its hughesnet? Ok So i made her to a speedtest.net... She got 932 ping less the 1.00 mbps download not even 0.20 upload i asked her how much shes paying because thats horrible she said 80$ a month and said shes stuck in a contract till october and was a 2 year contract i was pissed for her. Told her shes litteraly been being robbed blind for almost two years and the cost is way overpriced for the service she was recieving and litteraly should find a way out of the contract without penalty because it is blatant theft and clear false advertising when they say 25mbps and shes not even recieving 1/50th the speed they advertised. Then i read that if she wants out the penality fee is 400$ minimum and can go up to 1000$??? Fucking ridiculous and the first 400$ is for them to just come to the house to take back their shitty modem? So your telling me she has to pay them to return a crappy modem that they will just give to someone else and they are basically charging you 400$ for their 5$ gas use to get to your home? When they are recieving their shit modem back instead of you giving them a broken one back i told her i would throw their fucking modem hard into the street making sure it shatters because if your charging me 400$ to pick up a perfectly working device they gave you with no damages id rather give it back to them broken since the shitty thing doesnt even cost 50$. Then the other 400$ is a early termination fee for a service you basically never recieved since it was un un usable and where you never recieved the promised advertised speeds!? Just these 2 charges are fucking asinine and the fee over the modem is truely ass fucking backwards id rather pawn the fkn modem get some $ back because no matter what your paying that 400$ whether you return it or not. I told her she was better off not having any internet at all and saving the $ they basically stole from you over the year and a half. As for me i live in NY and have optimum thank god cuz my ex had cox in Arizona and that sht sucked just as bad. What in getting at though is these satellite companies rob their customers blind constantly lie to your face with excuses like bad weather when its perfectly sunny. They fasley advertise which i believe is grounds for ez lawsuits and if you want to leave your contract you will need to cut out 1 of your kindeys for these fucks.

fuggle buggle The problem is many of us have no choice and without it we would have no service. I hate these companies just as much as you and wish I could have broadband. I pay 150$ a month with ping in the 600s with data caps it’s trash. Broadband companies refuse to invest in certain areas that don’t seem profitable which is why so many people have to use this trash.

Currently, our only option is satellite internet. Viasat has been very reliable. And......since we started using their Viasat browser..........speeds are much better since the browser is stopping all those annoying ads and videos that we don't want to see anyway! With that said though, I am super excited about the satellite options coming soon........based on one of your other videos. Hooray! More satellite competition and less latency issues.

Viasat's packages and speeds are not available everywhere especially on the west coast. Some areas only 12 Mbps is available starting at $100. For some reason their discouraging new customers in certain "beams" or areas. HughesNet has always had introductory prices. Usually for a year. I believe you have to lease equipment from ViaSat and HughesNet you can either purchase or lease. If you purchase you can avoid $15/month lease fee. For some reason HughesNet's dish got bigger. Right now their not really competing with each other. 2021 things will probably get a little better. Hopefully.

Another thought. There is a diffenence between Mbps and Latency, while you can buy high speed, theres two extra hops on Geo-syncronous satellite internet, each roughy 23k miles. That takes time. Not an issue for streaming data, but VOIP and gaming takes a big hit.
