I wasn't paying over $130 to buy new cables just because my current ones weren't built to what i would call a quality standard. So to save money and waste i am going to fix my current ones.

Not any more than any other tech company nowadays is. iPhones last significantly longer than most Android phones. There are people that still use iPhone 4s and 5s for a reason. And I'm saying this as someone who had only had Samsung phones for years. They're also much easier to repair.

The Story behind those Cables: In 2009 Greenpeace did a lot of lobbying against Apple. They have criticized the fact that the cables are made with PVC-containing plastic. After some pressure, Apple bowed to this. Since then, Apple has advertised that the devices are made without toxic plastics and PVC. Around 2009, Apple also changed the plastic of its cables. Of course, Apple is now benefiting from this. Keyword: Planned obscolescence and greenwashing.

I have a working example or two of radios from the 40s, given I would never use them long term until the proper repairs have been done. I've been doing the heatshrink trick on these cables for quite some time, but one thing you can do to make them more rigid and keep the heatshrink in place is to fill the heatshrink with some hot glue before shrinking it. Then when it's shrinking from the heat, the glue will remelt and fill all the nooks and crannies and stiffen up. I've had some cables repaired in this method last for years more.

A much appreciated video, I'd like to recommend looking into the different types of heat shrink. You may have single wall heat shrink tubing which is usually 2:1, however the next step up is double wall adhesive lined heat shrink which is usually 3:1 allowing you to go with a slightly larger diameter to slip over your cable ends. The adhesive lined is often used in automotive and marine applications where oxidation and abrasion is more a concern because of the harsher environment. I hope this doesn't come off as condescending, I really appreciate your videos and the British vehicle you are restoring on the other channel, Cheers

2:10 Ah, some things never change. I remember buying an iPod Video around 2006 and commenting that the thumb wheel on those things was a bit too sensitive and that it would be great if Apple added a sensitivity adjustment to the Settings. The employee scoffed and told me I was using it wrong - I should be using the thumb wheel with my index finger! Funny enough, even back in '06 their cables weren't so great either. I think my iPod's charge cable has held up alright (wherever it's hiding now), but the shielding on the earphones gave out within a year.

Actually, you should use the heat shrink to cover the cable after you bought the phone. That is the first thing I do when getting a new phone. That way, you can avoid the cable from getting dirty or disintegrate. Just like people do to their new car, wrap it up to protect the original paint. For this case, repair it is just the only option.

At least rumour has it Apple will be switching to braided cables for the upcoming iPhones. That will solve this issue. Personally I haven’t had too bad of luck with their cables, my family has broken some though, one I suspect was being in the heat/cold too much because it is always in our car so it gets the heat of summer and cold of winter. Also dropping a device off the couch while connected and bending the cable by pushing it against the couch has made them break quicker. I do also have an Anker lightning cable and it’s really nice.

Bro it’s been almost 5 years since I’m using that cable, and yk how prone these Apple cables are to wearing out over time. But yea you’re right, for someone whose cable is new they should take care of it so that it lasts for a long time

I'd recommend putting a whole cable in a heat shrink since the cable will start to tear apart in lower portions. Also, you can even put a "healthy" cable in the heat shrink to prevent its deterioration in the future.

I’ve been using the same Apple lightning cable since 2015, it has no breaks so unless you abuse your cable it’s not going to fall apart. I have a relatives 30 pin cable from 2012 which was used every day and I still use it today and it as well doesn’t have any frays.

A common technique (you might find interesting) is to line the thing you're heatshrinking (usually a cable, or wire) with silicone, so that when the heatshrink conforms to what you're shrinking it around, it is very waterproof.

The first and last thing I bought from Apple is my iPod Classic. It was 2007 and both the iPod and its original cable are alive and working - no discoloration, no hardening of the cable and no connection issues. The battery on the device itself is also the original one. Doesn't last more than 4-5 hours nowadays but it shows that Apple used to build hardware really well.

Mine too. I am tired of buying new cables so I cut a hard plastic straw in half. I then cut a slit length wise. I slipped my cable inside the straw then glued up the slit and both ends of the straw with hi-temp glue. I used it like that for a month now and it is still going strong.
