A very important story that HAD TO BE told! Respect to the fishing men and wives of Hull!

Feel so proud to be from Hull. It took me 30 years to learn the history of this. I had no idea.

It's essential that these stories be remembered and told. It is staggering to realise that you live in a country where it is all forgotten.

An inspirational documentary. Shame it only got to BBC4. This heritage needs to be kept alive.

The bravest of men. The strongest of women. RIP

Never knew of this. I grew up in a small fishing village in the NW Scottish highlands. Seeing how much the fishing industry has suffered since I was a kid in the 80s, these women who fought for their men and community are my heroes. How sad that we weren’t taught about them when we were in school. The country owes them a massive debt of gratitude.

I am from Hull and proud to be from that City. My father started out as a trawler man and indeed was a "decky learner" prior to making his way further in the Merchant Navy. The triple trawler tragedy, though slightly before I was born, still loomed large throughout my childhood. This was basically a good documentary, however, a few points need to be made and borne in mind. First of all, if all of the people who claimed to be born and brought up on Hessle Road are to be believed, it must have started in Hull and ended in Johannesburg. I was not born there but I did live there briefly in later years. The second thing is that the image of the Hessle Road fishing community as being salt of the earth working class heroes is not strictly true. The area was known to be extremely rough and indeed was looked down upon - rightly or wrongly - by those residing in other parts of the city. Thirdly, it was not just the younger, single men who spent their wages on drink during their three days off. Many family men did it too. There were many families with large numbers of children who were often neglected. Many went barefoot or had plastic shoes. Physical abuse of spouses and children was widespread and common. Cases of sexual abuse were also not unheard of. Watch the film and celebrate the achievements of the women involved. Do not however be taken in by the rose tinted view of the community presented in the documentary.

I can't remember the amount of times we sang the hymn Eternal Father as a child in the school's assembly, but it was many many times and always brings a tear to my eyes.

Very emotional. Grew up on Hessle Road, Hawthorne Ave. All the men in my family were trawler men. Good to see my uncle in the film.God bless Lil and all the women. The owners and their representatives were absolutely revolting.

Proud to be from Hull City - I'm not from a fishing family but respect to all who worked in the fishing industry, then and now.

Have so much respect for these men and women. I'm from Leeds but have spent a lot of time in Hull working, the people are great people, real and down to earth. Love going there.

I have just seen the Documenary about Lil Bilocca and the wives of the Trawlermen she was brave but paid a price for the victory of Radio officers she was threatened with beating s and further and treated like pariah ! She was a brave women and she fought for the right of security. God bless her!! Dr S

Thank you for posting. Unfortunately the pure free market without regulations resulted in the untimely deaths here. People don't do the right thing without laws. The regulations that came about did not destroy this industry thst was outdated. Thank you brave women for your voices and protest to bring about change.

Very impressive, emotional and captivating. I worked on board the "Ross Revenge" and had a lot of talks with our chief engineer who worked on her when she was still fishing. This brought his stories even closer to home. Thank you for uploading.

my old man was an hull trawler man and so was his brothers but he would never let me go in the industry so i went in the merchant navy and now 40+ years on im glad i did

I remember all of this happening, and these women should be honoured for what they did, I've always held them in the highest regard. It was thanks to them that changes were made, sadly too late for many but we should never be allowed to forget.

This is one of them 😢❤..The message I got from this is the same message the miners got..Never fight for the working man because they will always let u down just like this lady was let down when not one person who she fought for went to her funeral service…

Very few at Lillian's funeral,unlike the so called Queen mother,years later. But l know who I'll rember most! And who contributed most to humanity?

I remember this. I knew folks who lived on Scarbrough St. Wonderful people.

My granddad was on the ship nearest to the Ross Cleveland. Brave, brave men.

I remember this well i am a hessle road girl and proud of it big lill was a lovely lady

By the 1960's...the greatest deep sea fishing industry on earth. Twenty years later all of it had gone . So sad. I was born in Beverley and grew up in Kirkella and Anlaby Park. I don't remember these boats that went down but my older brothers do. There was so much pride in the fishing fleets and to see it all gone by the mid Eighties was heartbreaking really. I left Hull in 1982 . I went back a few years ago and the town just seemed bereft of the character it once had. Whitefriagate was a ghost street.

Could be a good movie like the Perfect Storm.

And others slate us born and raised on Hessle rd!, we were proud and still are of our heritage !

Ironically the cod war might well have saved many a trawlerman's life in that it put a lot of those trawler owners out of business. Yes men lost their jobs but at least they were still alive. Many of those rust buckets were not fit for sea and they were finally sold off, many of them for scrap.

My memory not so good these days....we that went to sea had a separate dole office.early 70s...end of an era then

Its sad so few people have viewed this, and the ladies who fought for the fisherman remain mostly unremembered today. Like the video says at the end they should be rewarded for their courage and actions.

Is there an official statue in Hull of the head scarf revolutionaries? Because if so I'd like to visit it and pay my tributes to these fantastic women.

Roly(snowy)dunk,watching this brought to mind a chief engineer(don Jackson)I sailed with who said...if it wasn’t,t a legal requirement for the owners to fit lifeboats they wouldn’t and I believed him.
