The Hultafors Talmeter tape measure may very well be the best tape measure you may have never heard about. I have been using the Talmeter for over 10 years and is the best tape measure I have ever used. If there is a better one, I don't know about it. My favorite is the 3M version and the only current source in North America is in the link below:

The "talmeter" is a perfect tool also when getting tired or stressed since there for the measurements inside and outside for cutting and fitting aren't necessary to read out the actual measurement value; I just transfer the measurement from the fitting place to the workpiece. Perfect for making circles, and also available in the VP model, which I personally find more sturdy and robust.

I have used 6 meter talmeter for several years in various renovation jobs. I came to know it when my father-in- law used original version in sheetmetal work. Talmeter is super accurate and belt clip is great. I only wish they would make mirror image of it which could be held at left side and used with left hand.

Scribe feature is very handy here in europe for builders as you can cut easily through plasterboard and just snap them with Talmeter. No other marker needed.

I suppose that diameter measurement would come in very useful for measuring a pipe or something which is in situ, where you couldn't get at the end to measure across.

We use them for drawing ac parts on metal. My teacher even said that you shouldn't really use it for measuring. It's like magic when you see a pro use it for that.

Hi! You wanted to know about great tape measures, I found one! Its called SnapGate! Its priced fairly and available at Harbor Freight. I dont know if its at all Harbor Freights, but in Grants Pass Or. Usa. It is. I use it to maintain 328mm on my violins. I liked it so much I bought several for spares. Hope this helps someone! Bye😅

Hi Steve, I decided to swtich my shop to metric after I attended the September Alpine Workshop. I had purchased a Starrett metric tape earlier this year. I'm going to pick up one of these tapes to give it a try. Always enjoy your videos.

Hi Steve - Great video. I've used US-made Stanleys and Kleins, they were good, still have one of the Klein. Currently have some FastCap, ok, no real complaints. For woodworking, I have some LongLife folding rules, I use one for inside measuring. Inside measuring w the LongLife is ok, I wouldn't call it easy. I will check out this Hultafor, it looks real interesting. The pi-scale may be used for measuring around trees, to get a rough diameter estimate. Cheers . . .

So where is this tool from, well, Sweden. Here is the history. Engineer Ture Anders Ljungberg was dissatisfied with the existing measuring devices, such as rulers, which were available during the construction of his own house in 1947, and therefore developed the first Talmeter that was presented in 1954 in two meters version. Initially, the production took place entirely in the own garage, with a single engine that had to be moved around between the machines. The machine park was gradually expanded and the Talmeter was manufactured for 50 years by T A Ljungberg AB before Hultafors AB bought the company in 2005. By 2003, approximately 6.7 million had been manufactured The name TALmeter start with his three initials (Ture Anders Ljungberg).

I have both tapes shown in the video and like Steve rarely use the 6 metre version. I also have BMI Quicky tapes and they are at least as good as the Hultafor 3 metre tapes if not better due to being way more suitable to putting in a pocket and can be used as a straight edge for marking out.

Nice tape measure, hadn't heard of this brand before. It's quite a bit cheaper here ($25) in Europe it seems. Still seems like a good deal though, I always get annoyed with cheap plastic ones where the locking mechanism breaks after some time. Might buy this one as a backup to my old metal Lufkin.

@@extremewoodworker I 've used it now a couple of times. It does have all the nice features seen in the video and I 've already got to use some of them. However I find it to be difficult to open because you don't seem to have a good grabbing point. The "scribing" point is sort of in the way and I 'm always afraid of getting a cut in my finger. I 'll definitely keep using it for inside measurements and quick/rough parrallel scribing, but I don't know if it will replace my "stanley powerlock 3m" as "go to" tape measure

Steve can you be so kind to let us know the main reasons you switched to metric. Thanks, and as always your videos are a delight !
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker Жыл бұрын
Hi Fernando. I initially switched to metric to make it easier on myself when using European hardware and I got tired of using both systems in my work. It is also much easier to do math in my head with metric and no fractions. I had some struggles initially with scale of anything more than 100mm but it quickly became second nature. To me, the biggest challenge in the US is the lack of access to metric router bits. Steve

Steve, do the machines you use, get you to switch to metric? Just curious on why you chose this preferred method. Thx

Hi Tundra, I chose to change to metric to make it easier dealing with cup hinges and drawer slides. Using both was for the birds so I just changed to one. The mental math was much easier too. Steve

QUICK QUESTION: I was watching your video on making an air clamp using MDF to cut six-sided lids. You showed the MDF was so porous that it could hold up six pieces of stacked MDF. Although you sealed the sides of the clamp with super glue, wouldn't there still be a loss of suction thru the top? Though it probably wouldn't be needed for the application you used it for, wouldn't one made from acrylic be more effective? Apart from it just being a case of using "material on hand", was there any reason why you went with MDF? Anyway, glad to see you are making videos again. Keep up the good work.
@extremewoodworker
@extremewoodworker 2 жыл бұрын
Hi GK. The decision to use MDF was that I had it on hand and was inexpensive. There is definitely leakage through the top. I think any plastic would work much better than MDF. I have watered down some PVA glue and used it to seal the MDF. It helps but is still not perfect. Thanks. Steve

It's good but it was way better when the talmeter was made by the talmeter company. Hultafors made it a much worse product. It was available in inch before hultafors bought them.

Hi Made in Sweden. I guess it is not uncommon that changes for the worse get incorporated into a product (or is discontinued) when a company is bought/sold. My wife and I used to be Husqvarna sewing machine dealers when they were made in Sweden and I believe were at their best until that portion of the company was sold with the bean counters taking over. I guess change is inevitable and is not always for the better. Take care. Steve

Disclaimer: im a hack and an imperial guy. That said. I did pick up a Festool metric tape for kicks but, didn't use it or feel like it was quality (i could be wrong about that). I may torture myself and make my next paulk bench in metric to try to at least give it a go. Im gonna grab one of these for the heck of it (unless it is stupid expensive). Will check the link..

Hi William. Nothing wrong with using the system you are most familiar with and I had to force myself to change. It was difficult at first but I quickly discovered the advantages of metric when dividing things into halves, thirds, etc. This is much easier using metric. Steve

I don't know what to admire here, no decent carpenter in Europe uses a class II measure and this measure does not have a sliding nose, which distorts the dimensions, I recommend Fisco BT5M Big-T Tape 5m and throw this measure into the trash or give it to someone who cuts the plasterboard.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but in the realm of woodworking, the 0.2 mm thick non-moving tip on a Talmeter tape measure with 1 mm incremements does not matter.
