One of the many things that Adam Smith is famous for is his ardent advocacy of the division of labour. To illustrate its advantages, he gave the example of the process of manufacturing pins: it’s much more efficient for people to specialise, so that one cuts the pins, another one makes the head, another one sharpens the point etc. Yet Karl Marx came along and pointed out that there is also another dimension to the whole process….
