@@SythDracous Probably was not a thing prior to the banning and as such would only exist if it was allowed first. A small curse. A large effect. If a word is banned from being said people tended to not look to say that word there. As a child your first curse word is learned and it opens a new world of language. To the unknown, when all is avoided for fear of repercussions, you don't learn that first word until you make a mistake and get punished for it. Their punishment is probably removal from society on a long term basis. A war of speech. Who better to fight said war than a deathworlder?

I think humanity is dead in that one due to it said “we were saved by a dieing race” and “the United Terran Republic that is an alliance of hundreds of species.” That or humanity is very few in numbers.

From these enjoyable stories, something is missing. The humans are portrayed as altruistic, which is nice but unrealistic. A military incursion such as happened in the second story is easy to see and thus relatively easy to defend against, given that the defenders have powerful allies - but the danger of economic dominance comes next, after the battle and during the peace, and that is harder to point to and respond to. Oh, sure, there are humans who care about being "fair" in commerce, even many who are altruistic - but it is certain and undeniable that there are significant number of humans who are thrilled to exploit such a situation for their economic gain - it seems to be part of the nature of a significant percentage of the human race. So, realistically, after saving the inhabitants will come commerce, some of which will be "fair", but some of which will be exploitive. There will be economic winners and losers but hopefully the situation of trade and commerce will result in the presence of a large "middle class" who live comfortable lives.

Hiya, I'm the author of story 2. The humanity i had in mind is a post-scarcity society. I may write more in the same world, but the idea would be that each species is given a radius around their home system that is theirs. until they are up to speed on how the republic works, they are protected by law and any who try to tip the scales in their favor are punished severely. This humanity has made that mistake before, and is not about to allow it to happen again. After all, it's what nearly destroyed them until another race said "Fuck it, we are dying to the same evil and it is too late for us, but we will give these crafty monkeys everything they need to ensure they can fight back!" The republic is built upon the ruins of the empire that attacked humanity, and it consists of the victims of that empire and the races humanity has found who are willing to co-operate. If they aren't willing to co-operate, then humanity will leave them to their own devices unless provoked. It's a very "Star Trek tinted glasses" view of things, but keep in mind this is thousands, if not tens of thousands of years in the future. Humanity is an old race by the point. another story of mine, a single pinhole, covers the very start of the republic.

I like that second story. "You owe us nothing." When in fact, they owe them everything, but its so human to forgive such a debt. All they want is to be friends if the newcomers are willing. 🤌
