How a Failed VW Transmission Sent This Car to the Junkyard??

This Automatic transmission had poor shifting. That lead to this 2006 VW Touareg basically being scrap. In this video we teardown this transmission to find the transmission failure. Transmission failure is a common vehicle failure, but this Touareg transmission is pretty solid! #humblemechanic #VW #fail

Mr. @@HumbleMechanic, do you know why an Automatic car would stall at a stop when in drive I replaced the clutch & disks on an M-Editon MX6 V6, however the prior stalling unless I put it in Neutral isn't happening but it feels like it wants to happen as you can hear the engine fighting to stay alive against the resistance of the brakes I did use bunch of thick Lucus to limp it home when it burnt out, but the whole unit was disassembled aside from valve passages(&TC I can't remember)so the fluid should all be quality Castrol stuff meeting & exceeding the recommendations So is there something else wrong, or is it some amount of Lucus causing it to feel like the wheelspeed or lack thereof creating drag against the engine idling at a stop in gear, out does another part need replacement?

“Lifetime fluid” is very expensive in the long run. I’ve always done my DSG changes strictly on 40k intervals. Even though the fluid looks fine I still change it on time and have never had a problem with any of them.

depending on the dsg there is a service interval. the dry cluch dsg boxes dont need to be serviced because of the mech unit being seperate from the gearbox side

Lifetime fluid is the correct title though, because when the fluid stops working well, it kills the transmission.

Changing the DSG fluid and filter is good, but there are shops which do DSG flushes. I have seen plenty DSGs that shifted worse after the flush. According to Scotty Kilmer, the flushing machines blow contaminated fluid through the solenoids where the particles may stick in the solenoids. Causing them to work improperly. Just change the oil regularly.

I've never owned a Nissan, but supposedly a lot of the reason CVTs today still get a bad rap is because Nissan slapped "lifetime fluid" on all of the models in their first few years and then it completely backfired on them when people realized CVTs hate old fluid.

I absolutely marvel at how complex automatic transmissions are, and that they last for as long as they do. Now the adoption of classic automatic transmissions are coming to a close with the adoption of electric vehicles. Servicing these old transmissions will be a black art 20-30 years from now. Heck - it's a black art today with some dealerships/auto shops! 😆 Thanks for the teardown Charles!
@scott8919

I mean, economically... it's easier and cheaper to replace a transmission in a lot of cases than it is to tear one apart, diagnose the problem, get the parts, replace them, put it back together, throw it in, and pray it works. Pop the old one out, pop a new one in, DONE.
@pbe6965
@pbe6965 8 ай бұрын
@@scott8919 yeah, if the problem is not properly fixed it's another 3 grands in labour later, I'd rather have it replaced with a new or at least known good 2nd hand rather than trying to fix this one. The clutch was faulty but we don't really know why, if the reason is not running low on fluid it will happen again.

Kinda why I shudder to think about the disappearance of manuals in new cars. I know it’s a big job and most people don’t have a trans jack but I can theoretically service my manual myself. I’d be fucked with a DSG or traditional auto.

The first transmission I ever opened was from the 90s, first it was 98% metal second it looked way better than this one, and the outer case was covered in dirt and grime. kinda funny, buying the whole overhaul kit was less than 500 dollars, but it does take countless hours of Assembly to rebuild a transmission. It's sad to know, like on any other industry the coast to repair never comes from the spare parts, it mostly comes from the aggregate cost of service. and that is why everything is disposable, and they stop making spares for old models.

Awesome video. Thanks so much! You kept saying thank God it’s not going back together. Why exactly? Was this transmission Not a good candidate for a rebuild? And how come rebuilds never last as long as the original factory ones? Even if the car financially isn’t worth it, I’ve had cars that it’s worth it to me to pay $3000 to fix the transmission if I really like the car but it’s not worth it if I pay $3000 and the transmission goes bad in two years so I transmission rebuilt in the shop inferior to brand new ones? Because the shops always try to say they’re superior but that’s not been my experience.

A question for you and your subscribers: if you burn out the clutch on a manual car yet it is still functional, would it be harming any other components of the car, such as the gear box, if you delay replacing it?

No not at all, possibly the dual mass flywheel but unless it has physically failed (its springs for example), shouldn't be damaging a DMF either, though the DMF might not like the heat if it's being slipped constantly - nor will it last very long!

Speaking of faulty transmissions should I have anything to worry about with my 2016 golf sport wagon fwd non dsg? Yes I’ve changed the fluid every 40k miles but I’m curious.

Ah , Touareg . Unless it's a TDI they are in my opinion donor cars . My 2nd Smyth Ute ran an R32 clone engine built up around a Touareg 3.2 VR6.

Can you look at the 6 Speed Tiptronic from say 2003 to 2010? They almost all failed (including my 2005 VW New Beetle), just out of warranty are were very expensive to replace. Some component(s) were clearly up for the job and I'm just wondering exactly what the cause for these failures are.

I think the problem with out society starts with the pricing of the car to less than 3000 forcing people to buy new cars. Fix them! Their utility value is a functioning car.

Since the first video you have posted I have been hunting for a Touareg Gen 1. Did this SUV have hitch on the back? I cant recall. Do you happen to have a list of items to watch out for when buying a VR6 version? Where would you go for trans parts for DIYer?

Have you ever taken apart a jetta hybrid transmission? They had a recall on it from hairline cracks in dsg 7 speed transmission. My hybrid jetta had 62,000 miles and I was told it needed a new transmission which VWsaid they aren’t responsible for, even though my car had same symptoms as recall jettas. But my car, along with so many others, is not on the recall. VW doesn’t even take transmissions apart.

Could you please do a teardown of a knackered differential on a 3.2 VR6, both front & rear? These are a VAG non-serviceable item but my 19 year old cherished A3 3.2 quattro came a complete cropper due to the fluid overheating after a high speed drive. Greetings from the UK!

Hey, sorry to disturb you. Watching you for years now.. i did learn a lot from you. But i have a weird problem going on. Golf 7 mk7 gti performance stage 2 (315hp) I get epc when full throttle (6500rpm shifting) when i restart the car its gone. Weird thing is if i shift before 6500k rpm there is no problem. What can it be? I changed the bobine and coils to from a Audi RS which can handle up to 600hp.. Can you please help me out? What should i get checked out? Or what can i do? Car has 135k km. Should i check the throttle body? I got the gti bcuz of ur R videos. Felt in love and did many things to it you did 😁😁😁
