Hummer H3 problem - intermittent crank no-start on first crank but immediate start on second crank. Model: 2006 Hummer H3 w/2008 to 2007 converted 3.7L engine.
Cause - 2006 3.5L intake cam sensor was incorrectly placed on the 2008 3.7L swapped engine resulting in improper computer timing.
Solution - relocate intake cam position sensor hole & set proper "air gap."
Thank you so much to everyone who has provided ideas and input with troubleshooting this issue! I hope my findings can be of use to others in a similar scenario. Leave questions and comments below! :)

Thanks so much for documenting the dyi videos of your hummer. There are many out there and I have found yours to be the best. Well composed and clearly presented. I also have a 2007 Hummer H3 which I purchased new, I’m the original owner. I have taken excellent care of it, however, it is inevitable with 160K miles the age is catching up with her. Videos like yours are a gem, I will be replacing the fuel pump this weekend - thanks for your help and advice!

I have the same problem, the owner I bought it from had a motor swap. I will definitely be checking tomorrow morning cam sensor. How did you keep metal shavings getting inside the motor, when fixing the hole?
@H3Humper
@H3Humper Жыл бұрын
Sorry you're experiencing this, as well! I really hope it resolves your issue. It seems like it could be a very easy problem to encounter during the swap, unfortunately. A person has to be super detail-oriented to position the sensor properly. I recommend making a stencil from an engine with the proper placement (I found a 2006 3.5L Colorado at a junkyard to create my "stencil"). I would mail you the one I made but I must have gotten rid of it, unfortunately. To avoid metal shavings from entering the engine, I stuffed a lot of paper towels and grease around the area. After shaving the material off, I took a vacuum and sucked up loose shavings and then carefully removed the rest of the shavings laying on the paper towel and stuck in the grease and pulled them out. I took care to not drop any and then took clean paper towels to clean up any remaining shavings. I believe the side of the head covers just the timing chain, so you don't have to worry too much if a single shaving drops in because the likelihood of it causing an issue is incredibly marginal (I think).

I guess changing the year of the cam sensor wouldn’t work either, I thought about finding the year of the motor and find the cam sensor for that same year.
@H3Humper
@H3Humper Жыл бұрын
@rob marti Great idea! For some reason the newer engines just straight up don't have the intake-side cam sensor, which is why this year-specific swap requires installing a sensor. To go without installing the sensor, I think a person could replace the whole harness and PCM with the newer year but it'd probably end up being even more work 🤔

I have the exact same problem with my '06 with the original engine. I assume the sensor can go bad? Is it easily accessible? Excellent video!
@H3Humper
@H3Humper 2 ай бұрын
Dang! It is a strange problem. I would suggest visually inspecting your current sensor, and yes, it is pretty accessible. I believe only the intake baffling (big black box on top of engine) needs to be removed to access it. The belt might have to come off, too. Let me know if it looks damaged, loose, or anything suspicious. If there is an obvious issue with the sensor, replacing it would make the most sense. I believe there is a way to test it, but I don't know the method. Has your H3 always had the issue since you've owned it? If you are unsure if the cam sensor has been replaced, it might be worth just having a "CASE relearn" procedure done on it (can be done with HPTuners or an Autel, I think). Most shops should be able to do it, too. Make sure the CEL isn't on and any codes are cleared before the relearn procedure. Also, some places describe a relearn without a tool, but I believe a tool is required for our H3's. Let me know when you get eyes on your sensor!

@@H3Humper I've owned the H3 for 8 years and I know that the first owner was an elderly lady (believe it or not) so I doubt there's been an engine change. I will inspect the sensor connection and let you know. This problem developed within the last few years. By the way, I use my red H3 to transport Marines from the 29 Palms MCAGCC Base to the airport for a local charity, so I need it to run flawlessly. Thanks for your great videos!

My problem turned out to be the fuel pump; it would not hold pressure when the vehicle was shut off. Works great now, but I have a new problem with it. I can’t pump more than a couple of gallons without the nozzle shuts off. I took it to my mechanic and he did something, but it’s doing it again. I told him I’d run out some off the gas before I bring it back (just in case they need to drop the gas tank again.

What's up Dingle? I know you've seen some of my videos on start up issues and the fuel pressure test before and provided some insight, but what are your thoughts on this same (or very similar, at least) issue you experienced but with NO engine swap? I'm still battling the same issue that has plagued this car for nearly 9 years where the engine nearly loses all power, and sometimes does shut off entirely, after it's been driven during the day and then sits for a few hours. The reason why it might not be the exact same issue you had is because it will always start for me, but most of the time it dies or wants to die within a few seconds unless I give it some gas and get the RPMs up to ~2,000 for 3 or 4 seconds before letting off the accelerator. If it dies on me, it will always start up on the second attempt, although sometimes I have to hold the key position for longer than normal and the engine seems like it turns over more than normal. But eventually, the RPMs even out and it idles just fine. The throttle body is as clean as it can be, MAF cleaned on a fairly regular basis, VVT solenoid recently cleaned up really well, camshaft and crankshaft position sensors replaced, vapor canister purge valve replaced, induction cleaning performed at a shop less than 5,000 miles ago, and I just replaced my fuel injectors last weekend which did nothing to improve the situation. I was really hoping it was going to be a leaky injector because I have been smelling gas at start up ever since I performed the fuel pressure test but still the same issue as always. I do not have years and years of experience and knowledge of the inner workings of car engines but it just seems like it's gotta be a fuel delivery issue. Again, no real definitive reasoning behind that but it's just what my gut tells me. I do have a new OEM MAF that'll be here on Saturday but I'm not holding my breath that replacing it will miraculously fix all of my starting problems that have been going on for 9 years. You think I should be looking harder for leaks? I haven't taken a look at the fuel pump or anything down by the tank like you did, but I also don't have any codes that indicate an issue there and replacing a MAF for $50 that might not be the problem is a lot easier to be alright with then it would be to replace the fuel pump. I will add that I did not perform a case relearn after replacing the camshaft/crankshaft. Feels like I'm running out of things to look for and/or replace so any additional thoughts you can provide would be really great. Appreciate all you have done with your H3 videos!

Do you ever go to Utah? If so, we could meet up and I could help a but more with diagnosing! It sounds like it could be a variety of things 🤔 Did you ever replace or remove or hollow out your cats? If you did, the problem persisted ofcourse, which makes me wonder about a possible vacuum leak causing it to lean out and stumble (which you can usually overcome by revving it really high). Have you ever gotten an occasional lean code? What codes does it have right now? Can you hook it up to a scantool and tell me what "STFT" and "LTFT" say on the tool's live data (I think the loaner car part store tools show this information, which is long-term and short-term fuel trims). If it has really high or really low fuel trims, it can help a lot with diagnosing. I saw your fuel pressure and compression test videos. I used the same testers and the fuel pressure one was faulty for me (was leaking pressure). If your fuel pressure is doing weird stuff, it can be related to sensor-read timing (CASE relearn would definitely be on my list to get done quick because it takes less than one minute to do). Have you tried a second test with a kit from a different store? Also, did you compression test all 5 cylinders? If so, what were your results?

@@H3Humper i'm in Kansas so it would be a bit of a drive to get over to your neck of the woods! In the fuel pressure test video I posted (5:18 mark: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nc6ladeXtLa6lX0.html&ab_channel=DJ) I captured the STFT at 4.69% and LTFT at 3.13% at idle and then .78% and 8.59% at 3,000 RPM. I did replace the first cat when I swapped out my exhaust manifold a bit more than a year ago but I still need to take care of the main cat leading out to the resonator. Historically, the only codes I've had on a consistent basis are P0300 and P0420. The compression test results had all cylinders at 140-150 PSI with very quick drop off. I did not do the fuel pressure test again because I had to get the tool back to O'reilly but maybe I should head over to Harbor and grab one of their kits. I will also see what I can do about the CASE relearn. My Bluetooth scan tool and OBD Fusion app for sure doesn't handle that so I'll try to find a tool that I might be able to borrow. I've also been curious about a potential vacuum leak but have not actually done anything to test that theory. I guess it's probably time though.

I'm have the same problem but I put a motor from 2007 to 2008 Do you have idea? How can make it work?
@H3Humper
@H3Humper 28 күн бұрын
I believe it may have something to do with the reluctor wheels (aka camshaft actuator wheel/sprocket). The 2007 has a 24x reluctor wheel (camshaft sprocket) and the 2008 has a 58x reluctor wheel. If you change the wheel to a 58x, I imagine your engine will run right.

@@proaudiodm8161 My pleasure 🙏 I would definitely try the relearn because it takes about two minutes worth of time, is free, and could solve the issue since the relearn is meant to recalibrate the sensors involved in timing, which could cause an intermittent crank no start. If the mechanic has an adequate scan tool, it would be silly to not do the relearn!

@Tom Tom Let me know how the pass lock delete thing works 😎 I'm interested! The H3's really do drive well haha, I almost feel like it's a sports car sometimes. I prefer smaller engines myself, so the 3.7 is great. I have actually been working on a tune for a hypothetical 4 cylinder swap for my H3 (2.9L from a Colorado). Not sure if I'll ever actually do it, but I might one day. With the Christmas tree delete idea, HP Tuners allows the user to "deactivate" check engine codes, which means the check engine light won't come on for those selected. I have four check engine codes on right now just waiting for warmer weather to repair haha, but my check engine light is off because I deactivated their trigger to the light with HP Tuners.
