No useful comparison here. The Unimog would leave a Hummer standing in off-road terms.

What this video shows me is how well a HMMWV/Hummer H1 performs against a short-wheelbase, high ground clearance 4x4 vehicle with lugged tires. The shorter, higher vehicle had better arrival, departure, and break-over angles. The taller vehicle was likely less capable of perpendicularly crossing a slope, and could haul, what, three people? I'm sure it costs more, too. How well would the HMMWV/H1 do with 40" lugged tires (which should fit on a stock HMMWV/Hummer H1) against this particular Unimog? To summarize, the surplus HMMWVs out there provide a very high level of performance for a low cost.

Both vehicles are a lot of fun to play around with, but the civilian H1 does provides lot more creature comforts. But the Unimog is probably better from a creature comforts stand point than a surplus HMMVW. At least it has doors and the lock too. Neither vehicle in the video is stock. Thanks for watching and will try to get some more 4 wheeling videos up sooner rather than later.

Unimog will only seat two people, far too many levers in the middle of the cab, though some have a slightly wider passenger seat for possibly 3, there is a double cab available which would then seat 5, but the extra cab and passengers will raise the centre of gravity, although it's a lot lower than it appears due to the design, not at all top heavy. Surplus HMMWVs do give a lot for the money in my opinion, as even a cheap Unimog in this model will be more than double or triple the cost of an HMMWV.

Hummer is faster on the pavement . The Unimog I think consumes less fuel . Maintenance costs are probably similar. I imagine a clutch for either one of these would cost alot of money .

You are partially right. Fuel economy is probably a touch better on the Hummer as it has a 12V cummins vs the GM diesel. Maintenance cost are a lot lower on a Hummer. At least here in North America as the parts are much more available vs a unimog. The tables might turn if we lived in Europe. The hummer uses a standard 4L80E transmission, which came in most 2500 and 3500 GM trucks for over 10 years, so tons of them around. Unimog is again a much more specialized beast and parts are up there in price.

These came in a lot of different configurations. This one was a winch truck back in it's working life I believe.

I'm not a professional film maker at the moment and don't have extra mics to put inside the trucks to get their sounds. Neither truck is very loud so you end up with more wind noise then truck sounds unfortunately with the way we were capturing the footage that day. Next time we will try to do some cold starts that seem to be mandatory to start every car video.

Hello bro. Unimog is on its place but 💪💪HUMVEE💪💪 is something like unmatchable. Its my dream to own and drive in my daily life there on narrow roads. Love from INDIA😊.

We were just out for a little fun. Perhaps we can do a side by side scientific comparison between the two in the future. All the usual metrics, fuel economy, cargo space, cost, comfort, 0-60 times. Both are very capable and it would be really hard to do a true side by side off road comparison. As to push them to the absolute limits off road you would be putting some pretty expensive vehicles in serious jeopardy of being damaged.

put any service member behind the wheel of a hmmvv and it will do far more than shown. hes babying the things so hard. plus the "H1 alpha Hummer" is a luxury SUV, not a true humvee with CTIS or the right suspension. the only upgrade from a humvee to the H1 is the engine trans and interior, yet it downgrades in off road capability because the H1 wasnt meant for hardcore offroad or combat environments, its a damn luxury truck not a offroad combat vehicle. now for the unimog in the video, NO SHIT itll outperform the H1, similar wheelbase, taller tires and much higher clearance, so of course itll outperform it. compare an Oshkosh MTVR against a humvee and itll be the exact same result. the humvee in itself was built to be a workhorse, troop carrier, guntruck, ambulance and have enough offroad capabilities to do all of those jobs in a combat zone. a unimog is primarily a troop carrier or a HEAVY hauler, so of course itll be built for such a job. in my experience with military offroad vehicles the humvee is good as long as you know what your doing while the unimog will do a better job for the vastly obvious reasons in just the terrain scaling sense. as an allround vehicle a humvee does just fine all you need is a driver willing to go full send when needed. you cant baby military vehicles, they were built to be beaten up and keep on going, not babied and treated nice. as any offroad guy there are plenty of moments that require a full throttle and momentum to get past an obstacle.

You should really do some more research. There is very little difference between the civilian and military units in terms of a rolling chassis. So suspension, CTIS, bead locks are all the same the off road capabilities of both units are the exact same.
