Subscribe so you won't miss the babies from hatch to their first flight!
🧾 Frequently Asked Questions
❓What species of hummingbird is this?
This is an Allen's Hummingbird which normally breeds on the West coast of the United States and Mexico, although the bird has been spotted in other areas of the southern United States.
❓Does this mother hummingbird have a name?
The contest to name our mother hummingbird is over! And the winner is... EMERALD (40% of 970 votes). We wish the best for Emerald and her babies!
❓When was the first and the second hatch?
The first egg hatched at 1:29pm on February 7.
The second egg hatched at 10:40am on February on February 8.
❓What day was the first hummingbird egg laid?
The first egg was laid on January 19 and the second on January 21.
❓How long will it take the baby hummingbirds to leave the nest?
The juvenile hummingbirds will fledge between 18 to 28 days after they hatched.
❓What is the nest made from?
The nest is made from grasses and small twigs filled in with soft and fluffy fibre that the mother hummingbird finds on fuzzy plants like seed pods, dandelion down, cottonwood and the like. The nest is held together with spider silk and is soft and spongy to accommodate the rapidly increasing size of the baby birds. To camouflage the nest she put paint chips on the outside to try to blend in with the house.
❓How can I help with the nest building?
You can supply soft material for the mother hummingbird to use in her nest. You can buy nesting material for your hummingbird here: amzn.to/3qMImAM
❓Will the nest be used again?
This same location has been used for a few years. Hummingbirds often have two or three clutches per year, so when these babies fly away we might not be finished for the season!

Beautiful! My mother passed may 23rd. Her favorite thing in the world was to sit on the porch and watch the hummingbirds! I'd like to think she's free of her painful body, and out there flying around having so much fun with the hummingbirds now. She is very loved and will be missed very much also!

Erin, my son died age 31 in 2018. The night before he passed he told me don’t forget mom to buy hummingbird feeders! He was going back to his apartment in Philadelphia my husband was taking him. I still have his sweaty kiss on my cheek as he had just been planting till late at night he loves the outdoors he loved nature and he was very in tune with hummingbirds which I didn’t really know that he had been. But he always saw me feeding our little birds in a nest and since a young age I brought him into nature, The pain of his life is so great I will never be the same. But I have hummingbird feeders and that would be hold in April after he had passed about a week after the hummingbirds came I stayed outside here in Southeastern Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia and by the time the summers and I had the hummingbirds eating out of my hand in a bowl. I have so many videos and I have so many little things that remind me of him that are hummingbird related. I’m sorry for your loss. We only get one mother in life and it’s so hard when they are gone and we love them so much. My mother died in 2014 she was the one that led us onto the nature journey and I took it from there and my son took it even further loving plants and nature. It’s been so hard for me being on medication’s a few grief groups, therapy …everything but nothing brings your child back. God bless you. And God bless your mother. I hope that I see hummingbirds in heaven with my son one day and I hope your mother has them flying around her in heaven!

My Dad loved hummingbirds. He passed in 2000. When my husband & I started build our log cabin ourselves, a single hummingbirds would come everyday, fly around the house as if it was checking our progress, then come to each of us in turn & fly away. This went on as long as we were working on the house. I always said, it was Dad coming by to see us. He also loved woodwork. Due to circumstances, we had to stop building for a few years. Our little hummingbird friend quit coming by. Then when we started working on the house again, the 3rd day we had a visitor. I'd like to think , it was Dad coming back, as if to say, it's about time yall finished the house. Unfortunately, I lost my husband to cancer last year and no we never got the house finished. 😞

As a 54-year-old disabled man I’ve taken up birdwatching 13 years ago in my backyard abode. I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed getting to appreciate birds of all species with hummingbirds among my favorites. Ruby red throat’s here in Georgia, I have to say, I would love to be able to put a nest cam like yours out. Of course I would never find the nest to begin with. I clicked on your video and watched with fascination but it is you who made the video so interesting. Such a lovely manner you have. As one poster said, what a blessing you are. Thank you.

Living on a 370 (+/-) acres forested "farm" with perhaps 50 acres ate in green grass pastures I often sit under the carport and watch a humming bird who flies about within easy sight. It often disappears into deep throated blooms and dances around for a few seconds before moving on to another flower. Took my phone camera and was able to capture her both in the flower and flying by close to its petles. At 84 at his has been such an awesome experience. God truly blesses. Peaceful and sweetness in abundance. Praying this joyfulness upon each and all... God is good... Indeed!

A priest's old sister had me accompany her to her lakeside vacation cottage that she built by hand (except the roof) out of stones that she handpicked. Somewhere in Ontario, I don't recall where. There were hummingbirds visiting all the time that I was there. Beautiful creatures. Too bad I didn't have the zoom lens to take their pics. Never seen these birds in person since then. I had a Hummingbird visit me really a few on the bird feeder, but I remember this one the best. I'm in the garden one day watering the plants I had the door open to the house and one of the hummingbirds flew inside and then tried to fly out of the window on top of the roof it would sit there trying to get out and get tiered and slowly fall I'd catch it in my hand and sit with it allowing it to gain its strength back and drink from the feeder. I then let it go and continue watering my plants i walked inside the house and there it was in the same spot, so I waited again it fell into my hands. I sat back down let it feed again and gain its strength back once more it flapped its wings letting a little feather go i still have the feather 10 years latter it then took to the sky. I then continued to water my plants trying to finish up for the day all of the sudden this hummingbird flies around my head i could hear its powerful little wings flapping in the air and then it stops directly in front of my face just sitting there flapping its wings as to thank me for helping it out I turned on the mist of the water and gave it a lite mist of the water and it took off into the air and came back down and then left what a wonderful thing to happen. How tiny these things are VERY CUTE.

I'm in awe looking at these feeders with so many hummingbirds harmoniously sitting side by side, around the feeders. I've got 2 feeders, one that feeds 4 hammers and one that feeds just one. I have rarely seen them sharing; they are incredibly territorial. There's usually one who "owns" the feeder and scares all others away.
@HummingbirdSpot
@HummingbirdSpot 3 жыл бұрын
These birds have given all of that up years ago. Fights have been won and lost over generations. They still fight, but at "swarm time" they know there is enough for everyone and they just fill up for the night.

They come here into my garden every day, loving birds and having always water for them for drinking and taking a bath. You can set a watch at which time which birds are coming. They never use the same waterspot together, always waiting polite until the other species is gone before they take a bath...humans can learn a lot from birds 😘😎♥

Years ago, in Tucson, AZ, we watched a Costas hummingbird build her nest and hatch one egg in the eucalyptus sapling in our front yard. The mama bird used Easter grass along with twigs and fluff to build her nest. It was quite decorative. During storms, with the wind whipping and whirling the young tree so strongly, we couldn’t believe the nest and mama bird stayed intact, but she had anchored it firmly with excretions she applied to the twigs. When the chick hatched, it quickly grew to be nearly as large as the mama. It took up the entire nest. It’s call sounded just like the chime on my husband’s sport watch. If another bird got near, Mama bird would attack it in a fury of flapping wings and dive bombs. No bird was too large for her! One day, the nest was empty. We discovered the pair in our back yard on our stone fence. The fledgling was still chiming, and Mama was still feeding her huge offspring.

Once, in San Jose, California, I watched a hummingbird build her nest on a tree branch right outside of our second floor window. She had two babies and dutifully fed them regularly. One day there was a terrible rain storm, and I just knew she wasn't coming back. I called the Audubon Society for help. They simply said it wasn't the season for hummingbirds to breed. I argued that the babies were in the nest outside my window. I tried vets and anyone I could think of - no help. The weaker baby died. I carefully lifted it out of the best so as not to leave my scent and waited. Nothing. There was no way to help.I buried both of them in my front yard. I learned a lot from watching the process and will never forget the experience.

After my son died 19 years ago my husband and I became constant bird watchers. He had written a poem about the birds and said if we would watch the birds we would see Gods grace and glory. The hummers and cardinals are the best. I have 5 HB feeders and still sit on porch eating breakfast and watching them. I don't have many but what I see are amazing. I know your mom is now seeing them abuntly. Thanks for the video Velma in Florida

My boyfriend & I are very into our birds & we recently decided it's best to go get a few hummingbird feeders installed. So we're newer to the Hummingbird thing however, I am very grateful there are channels, like yours, dedicated to this subject because I absolutely AD♡RE the few Hummingbirds we've acquired here so far in Pennsylvania. So truly, THANK YOU for caring enough to educate others on this! Keep up the phenomenal work! ♡

Just love these wonderful lil birds so much. We had a storm with tornado's roll through a couple weeks ago and I was worried about them as I have a few that buzz around all day. Learned one of the babies was injured across the street. She contacted a sanctuary that recommended she put in a cage in tree to see if it improves. Mum comes to feed it all the time through the cage ♥️ If it recovers, they will let it go. If not by next week, it will go to the sanctuary.

@@jimcowan8770 That's so neat! Thanks for sharing. I did have a couple of them fly close to me and look at me. The bench I sit in is only about 4feet from one of my feeders. I noticed that they each pick a certain feeder they like. On a couple of days when I first put my 3 feeders out, it was like a war zone. They were dive bombing each other and squeeking up a storm. It was so awesome to watch them.

I was wondering if any fellow hummingbird watchers have ever seen anything like this before. I was in my backyard when I saw a hummingbird fly straight up into the air until I couldn’t see it anymore, then it came straight down again and it was traveling so fast that it made a high-pitched whistling noise like a bomb would do in a movie when dropped from a plane. It made a sudden 90° turn right before it reached the ground. I was stunned. I told a few friends about it and they said it was probably a male showing off for a female during mating season. It was definitely a spectacular air show!

We’ve had Hummingbird feeders for years but never saw the hatching or even a nest! I could be wrong, but it appeared the mother was sucking out the ‘amniotic’ fluid, if you will, from the babies’ lungs and spitting it out. When a ‘human’ baby is born, the nose is cleared out by way of suction. Did anyone else notice that? Thank you so much for this amazing video. I’m new today and instantly subscribed! 🪴

Chicks actually start breathing inside the egg before they hatch. The eggshell is permeable to oxygen and an air pocket forms inside a membrane in the egg which the chick will begin to breathe before hatching. There is no amniotic fluid like in a humans. Our mother was trying to give her hatchling its first meal. Fascinating stuff!

Nest building and the nests themselves are so amazing. These tiny Birds get all sorts of little bits of tree and plant matter, spider webs to hold it together!, and whatever they find and build a very sturdy home for two eggs and then two little hatchlings. Nests are a wonder of love and care, and True skill on the part of the bird who weaves all these objects together to create a very secure home, one that will not fall apart in the rain and one that stands up to wind. Beautiful.

Love hummingbirds and birds of all kinds! I held a feeder from my hand a few times and the hummingbirds came to feed off of it. They are so loud when you don't have glass between you!!! It is so amazing that my hummingbirds come back each year to the same exact window and hover if the feeder isn't there when they arrive. Their God given GPS is perfect, unlike man's GPS which is off and has to be adjusted!
