The Humvee brakes work so well because of the reduction gear in the portals. Since the brakes are mounted inboard, the gear reduction multiples the torque between the wheel and the brake rotor.

When I was in the military our early model non-uparmored HMMWV's had different payload ratings 2500lb and 5100lb. I believe this one would do much better unloaded like your friend is running it with some lighter coil springs in the back. To get the Torsen Diffs to lock up we pressed the brake and throttle at the same time. With all our butts, gear and armor in it the rig will articulate more than the one I saw in the Video. Not trying to shamelessly plug any product but those 6.2 and 6.5 motors really like Engine Restore, it helped me get mine started in the cold and they like a little transmission fluid or 2 cycle oil in the fuel as well especially if you're running jet fuel.

Some softer coils on the back of that H1 would probably help it out a good bit. They were rated at either 1 ton or 1-1/4 ton depending on which kind of humvee it is, and I think it's safe to assume it will no longer need the payload capacity that those springs were originally put in for.

The Jeep is awesome!! And I already know that some people won't understand why you were talking about the Humvee having much better brakes, They will think your Jeeps antilock brakes are much better, which on the highway they are, but when you're offroad rock crawling they're not. The Humvee's brakes are better on the rocks because they lock the entire driveline and not each hub separately like regular vehicles braking systems, which can allow one or more hubs to have play in them and can cause certain tires to slip or just not hold as well as all the others.

The electric auto transmissions have a manual lever, to put it in neutral. In the ram pickup it is behind a panel on the left side of the steering wheel, the Grand Cherokee it is in the center console towards the back, not sure where it is in the JL but check your manual.

This has to be one of your best videos! What a fun bunch of friends; kids playing in the snow and the rocks! Great to see the different rigs and how they drove. I miss my ZJ... It seemed to me that every time there was a traction loss on the rocks, the vehicle, no matter which one, had hard tires; letting air out might have helped, especially on the HumV. The military had tires and wheels hooked up to an on-board deflate-inflate system that could change the air on the roll. Those sure didn't look the like military wheels! I've always thought the Military could have used a few thousand Jeep Wrangler variants instead of as many expensive HumV's. How did your vinyl wrap hold up in the brush? StepChild should sounds and looks terrific! Thanks again for a great evening's entertainment! Love the banter between you two!

i gotta say, i had no real interest in jeeps when i first clicked on britt's diatribe '5 things we hate about our new JL', but following the StepChild's transformation from beast to beauty, i am awestruck! this is one Very valid use of the word, awesome!! as to JL vs H1, Very interesting!!! i'd like to see you both at Ocatillo Wells, the Mojave, Baja, or the like. the StepChild has blossomed into an offroad Ferrari while the H1 is more an offroad tractor! still, its in those extremes that the appeal (or lack thereof) for an evolving collection of parts is truly illuminated. please dont take the evaluation of the H1 as a tractor in a negative context, it's not a bad thing; the same is said about my big red pig(xr650l), but thats part of it's charm & appeal .

Hi Kevin and Britt, Last weekend I was at the Toledo Jeep Festival. I was talking to a guy from Ripp superchargers and he told me that the JL has a learning ECM after so many cycles of the ignition being turned off and on it can make changes. That's why they haven't released their JL supercharger yet, they want to make sure the tune is right before they do. This is probably why you could never get the tune right In your turbo.

I tested these for the military in 86 with the 9th ID. If he knew all the tricks to the HMMWV it would have gone even better. I must say, he did great for a new HMMWV driver. BTW, ya'll were so worried about the tipping point. Without the flex, the idea is that the low center of gravity and non-shifting center of balance or Fulcrum point, keep stability. When the wheel articulate, the weight is constantly shifting. Also, you are running a 30-year-old, perfect design against the best today has to offer. Geared hubs alone win the day. Or the brakes being located on the driveshaft. Oh, and initiate the brakes while gas is applied and you set the front and rear lockers. That one Sketch rock climb would have been a walk in the park. We took them over much worse terrain...and what, you think Afghanistan has paved roads in the mountains? Oh, and they were initially tested to stand 14 years of the worst war conditions. I only knew of 2 times they rolled. Both the same driver, (Lovejoy, you idiot.) and both times he rolled them by driving the passenger side over a cliff on gravel roads. Not even 4X'ing.

Sweet video, and awesome views! Maybe you all can do a meet up with James (STRADMAN)? He is about to pickup his Gladiator from having the Hellcat swap and you both could do a trail with the big V8's? That would be epic. Show James how to wheel, and checkout the two swapped Jeeps that are the most famous?

As usual, GREAT job spotting Brit! And GREAT job driving Kevin! I'm going with the '85-'89 4Runner (I'm an owner). I owned a H-1 in the mid 90's. They are incredible! I owned a few Jeeps too. So take no offense Step Child. YOU are indeed a BAD ASS! Keep being a BAD ASS and getting these kids into, and out of, TROUBLE! CHEEEEEHOOOOOO!

@@boughtnotbuiltoffroad7784 1996 (I'm so old lol) I bought my first, 1st Gen 4Runner. I don't want any other year. Of all my vehicles currently, my straight axle holds a spot in the Top 10. Of my Off Road vehicles, it's always in my Top 3. HOWEVER, all the upgrades to the Step Child make that thing so F'N fully offroad worthy! Just one suggestion, and it's only a suggestion, from my unworthy view point, build a cage as soon as you can. Wishing you 2 a crazy and super adventurous rest of 2019!
