I was woken up with the bed and doors shaking. I live in the centre of Syria and despite not being in the immediate vicinity, it was really scary! And it comes at the worst possible time, it is bitter cold and we have 30 minutes of electricity every 6 hours... truly horrific situation!

So awful. What a traumatized nation.

I was living in Istanbul, Turkey during the 1999 earthquake and survived because I resided in a well built building constructed of stone. There was a summer heatwave at the time, adding to the agony of both the trapped and the survivors. The most important concern for responders is time. Responders need to go now. Going now, no matter how imperfect your preparation, is better than going tomorrow fully prepared. How do I know? I was there in Istanbul in the midst of the tragedy. There was much talk about responders on the way and how skilled they were. Yes, they came, and they certainly helped save lives. I cannot say it was too little too late. But for many, it was just too late. If your group or organization is going to help you need to go now. Winter cold and dehydration are potential life takers. Time is not in their side.

Here in NZ they were trying to get survivors out of the rubble in CHCH (in 2010) and a fire started under the rubble and the people were burning while trapped :c I hope those who are trapped can be rescued safely without suffering any further 🙏🏻

The affected areas in Turkish territory mainly include 10 provinces (out of the total 81 that make up Turkey). About 12.5 million people are directly affected by the disaster. Buildings either collapsed like accordions or crumbled. A hallucinating degree of destructive force generated by the sheer nature of the planet. The situation is unimaginably terrifying over a very large area: about 200 Mila km². And as if that were not enough Two separate earthquakes, only 6 hours apart and born in a depth of ONLY 7 km and with hallucinating magnitude power from even one of 7.8 and the 'other of 7.77 have triggered more than 150 aftershocks of which 3 within magnitude between 6.4 and 6.7. It is snowing in some areas and the snow is spreading everywhere. Within a couple of days the temperature will drop to -10°C. ! From Hatay to Diyarbakir the distance is 600 km. Along this range the most affected cities are 10. The total population of these cities is over 12.5 M! How many thousands of rescuers do you think would be needed to save hundreds of thousands of lives (children and mothers) in a few hours? Roads, highways, etc. are destroyed, some of the airstrips are now smashed, there are collapsed viaducts on secondary roads... And all these disruptions are spread over an area of approx. 200M sq. km. where a polation of over 12.5 M inhabitants live. This is the stark summary of what is coming in Turkey.
