What are you legally required to do when you find hundreds of live rounds? I often find the odd one or two rounds of ammunition when out mudlarking, but I was shocked to discover a cache of over one hundred emerging into the daylight from the thick Thames mud. I duly scraped them up and took them to the local police station but I was surprised at what happened there!
If you find live ammo on the foreshores you must report it to the police. if it's one or two bullets then hurl them into middle of the river, but substantial amounts should be reported. If it's an explosive then do not touch it. Call the Police and they will come down and deal with it.
Finding these bullets from WW2 reminded me that it was Armistice Day (the day I made my video) and that the day that it is released it will be Remembrance Sunday. So I decided to take a trip to see the grave of a soldier whose luggage tag I found a few years ago. His name is Frederick Jury and you can read about him here:-
www.tidelineart.com/tideline-a...
Thank you for watching. If you want to try mudlarking you must have a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find all the details on the PLA website here:-

Thank you.

Very moving episode! Here in the US, November 11th is now called Veterans Day to honor all who have served our military. The most moving part was Clive and Dave clearing the brambles off the grave so it can be identified and honored as you did. I always admire people who do that kind of work so our cemeteries can be found and graves identified, and not just service peoples' graves but anyones. Thanks Nicola!

Unfortunately we live in the UK where they decided to remove all the head stones from our towns cemetery and dump them in the local landfill without any consultation whatsoever so again unfortunately we dont even know where are relatives greave are now as the whole graveyard has been grassed over. When the local clergy were ask adout this they quoted its looks better on wedding photos.

@@chrisardern4594 That is such a shame removing headstones from a cemetery! So short sighted. You can only hope that they took photos and set up a grid to know where everyone is buried. I’d be totally insulted that they did that and refuse to go there for a photo op just because it looks prettier. They erased history!

Some of you have shared such moving stories about your relatives who fought during the war. I noticed that the BBC are collecting stories from the war and if any of you are interested in taking a look - you can find the link here. If the link doesn't work, let me know. It's good to be able to share the stories far and wide before it is too late! Future generations need to know. Take care all. Love Nicola www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63504826

I wondered if Bambi was in fact Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer from the 1960s clay animation? Both Rudolf and Bambi are American creations but I think Bambi is the best known ruminant outside the states so it is most likely Bambi. I remember when I was very young, there was an old man who often appeared as a guest in parades. He was a veteran of the "Spanish/American War" He was among the last soldiers alive in the 1970s from that war. The war its self was very dodgy in it's justification but a soldier is a soldier and it's good to honor their memory, from year to year.

My daughter's father and my ex-husband, fought in WWII and the Korean War and received 2 purples hearts. He was buried at Arlington Cemetery with full honors (at the age of 89) and deservedly so. While our marriage did not last, I believe he and thousands of others have earned the right to be remembered for their service.

I found myself brought to tears watching Fred's grave being cleared of brambles. Thinking of my own young uncle that was killed just weeks before the end of WWII. He was only 23 and I still have the letter from the Chaplin to my grandmother ( his mom) asking her to reach out to the young girl he met in England whose hand he had asked for in marriage. I never known the name of his sweetheart but often wondered about her and about her life after the war. It's something I think about every November 11th

If the Lime Juice sign was mine I would most likely trim off the large solid rust part off of the top and a section just like it on the bottom. Then maybe find a standard sized wooden frame that the remaining piece could fit into and add some paint to it to spice it up a little. Some people really go for the recovered relic look but who knows that better than you??? Your videos are a joy and I wish you and yours the best.

The lime juice sign is quite unique. I can only find the most-known Rose's Lime Juice, and no mention of anybody else making lime juice in the UK. The upper band of the sign is not "Rose's" but someone else, and not a lime juice maker - so this must be some parlor shop, pharmacist, druggist, apothecary, chemist name on the banner in the greater London area - making a lime juice drink for their customers. One would have to find such a name that is hard to read the final letters of the name - to find the actual business owner and where they were located in the London area. The date of the sign with enameling would suugest that it is in the post-WW I era and could have seen the Blitz of London events - and be a post-WW II sign of prosperity and peace - eventually discarded by an extinct (?) business. Your placement of the sign in the camera focus makes it extremely difficult to read the faded lettering. Maybe you can assist me in reading out the letters in the bottom and top banners. Looking again at the sign the bottom banner has an appearance of a megaphone with (CO)LD in the SW area, while large SOD(A) is in the SE corner. COLD SODA. The top is a horizontal line of the business owner's name xxxxxIE'S or NE'S or LE'S and what might also be under the name in the triangle area under the name and the diagonal LIME JUICE. There are over 45,000 United Kingdom surnames (and no possibility of looking for a surname with an IE, LE, or NE suffix) It is possible to use the 1736-1943 London business directory and find a hit for a soda maker or soda shop ... soda water connections: ?J. F. Cockle(s) /J. Coles /Jos. Coppendale /Hannah Davies /F Deane ?Devine & Co/Divine/Devine Co /Gale & Co /Fred. Heales/Freak. Hales /James Co/George James/James Co Ltd /Edward Jones/Charles Jones/Sandland Jones/Jones & Co ?E. Knowles /Line & Co ?McDoddies /Miles & Co ?E Minories /James Pailes /Payne & Co/Duke Robert Payne/John Standon Paine /Pittville /G. Stiles/G & J Stiles/William Stiles & Co/Stiles Ltd /Stone & Co The full sign with LIME-JUICE is 10 letters, having someone say DRINK JONES is 11 letters, so anyone saying DRINK LINE'S would seem non-commercial, versus saying the name which can be up to 10 letters. Thus surnames with 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 would appear to be negated. But wide-lettered names (B, C, D, E, F, H, K, L, M, N, S, T, V, W) could be 7 or 8 letters. Cockle's (sic?) Cockle's or Cockles' Devine's - wide-letter D E V - N E ' S Knowle's (sic) Knowles' McDoddie's (sic) McDoddies' Minorie's (sic) Minories' Removing the inferior spellings of the (sic)s ... leaves the only valid sign lettering and advertising lingo: Devine's Lime Juice COLD SODA. Devine & Co are known soda manufacturers This is 7 hours of research - you owe me 2 P of Black and Tan !!!

Wow....Thank you for sharing your finds and for getting Fred's grave cleared. It was very moving. He is truly not forgotten..Thanks to you. My own grandfather was a simple countryman from Wiltshire who joined up in WW1 and was wounded at the Somme, being shot through the cheek and neck. He survived, was sent back but later discharged as invalid. He carried so many mental scars, like lots of those young men did and never really recovered. Sadly he took his own life in WW2 when it looked like we may be losing the war. Though I never met him, I always think of him on Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday. Thank you so much for the sensitive and caring way you research the lives of those to whom you connect through your find. You are a good person.

Oh Nicola, what a journey! Or, after mounting it on the boards in the hallway or in my studio, use it as a magnet message & idea board. I can see it with sticky notes, magnets and clothes pegs that have magnets attached helping me remember Ideas, plans & projects... Your visit to the graveyard touched all of us I think. It is a day to remember indeed, all of those amazing beautiful souls that had/have our freedom in their hearts. Thank you for sharing that journey. After that amount of time these 9mm bullets would most likely be inert, due to the water penetration. At the base of the bullets are the primers, if the primer isn’t sealed with waterproofing the bullets can be susceptible to water, the water then would get to the powder or cordite and ruin them. It’s a impressive find. That was very touching you cleaning up the area and exposing the headstone. My granddad was from London, went into the trenches at 17 years old, he was wounded numerous times. After the war he worked in the office of Bryant & May of swan vest matches fame, after a few years of working there he must have been wrestles and immigrated to Canada and joined the RCR’s regiment ( royal Canadian regiment) and spent many years in as regimental sergeant major and retired in 1946. Awesome! In 1942 they had the early STEN Mk II 9mm SMG. But remember, they had the Lancaster SMG and just after WW2 the Sterling SMG, not to mention the Browning Hi Power pistol. All shot 9mm.... I had a parts kit for a late WW2 STEN Mk III made by Lines Brothers Mechanical Toy Company. I'd intended to build a dummy gun with it, but never did. I sold it. You know, STEN stands for Sheffield and Turpin, the designers, and ENfield. 👍😊🇺🇸🇬🇧

Shepperd and Turpin and it was a Lanchester and used by the Royal Navy. 9mm was selected because of the quantities of captured German ammunition from North Africa. 9mm was also a lot easier for the Resistance to source as well when Sten guns were dropped to them.

What a moving video Nicola - very touching indeed. Thank you for sharing. Three of my uncles fought in WWII, my Uncle Glen, an American Marine, was stationed in Shanghai in 1937 (pre-WWII) protecting the International Settlement during the Second Sino-Japanese War. The International District consisted of the British and American settlements which combined in 1863. My family lived in Shanghai from 2007-2015 so it is very interesting to me. My Uncle George was an American Marine who landed and fought in the battle at Iwo Jima. He would never speak of it. And finally, my Uncle Donnie was in the US Navy and was twice plucked from the sea when ships he served on had been attacked. He also would not speak of the war. Thank you for honoring these people. Thank you Nicola! Wonderful tribute to those who fought in the wars of the past. My father did two tours of duty in Vietnam and also fought in the Korean Conflict. I will be taking my mother's ashes to Hawaii to bury with my father next year. We just celebrated Veterans Day here in America. I have many Vets in my family and I am forever thankful for their service. God bless you Nicola!🥰

Hello Nicola, That we’re A very interesting film, especially the last piece about Remembrance Day & Fred/ Milly Jury buried in Greenwich. That we’re such a thoughtful gesture to get help to clear his grave and place those lovely white roses🙂🙂❤ It were especially touching showing the Last Post’ at Hero’s Corner in Greenwich Cemetery. My Gt Grandfather, Alfred Edward Minter, RN, is buried there and his name is commemorated on the bronze frieze at the Memorial . Very Sad but very ‘Heart Warming’ to see this on your lovely film today. Thank You so much Nicola ❤️🙂🙂

Thank you for clearing off Fred’s grave and laying flowers for him. It’s a shame the cemetery is so overgrown, that people can’t visit the graves there. I think it would be a wonderful project for the people of the city to go out there and clean up the cemetery. It would be a great way to honor those who have lost their lives❤

What an amazing video, it touches my heart when I see old soldiers graves, and the soldier who was laying the wreath at the cenotaph, and the dugouts. Well done to those 2 fellows clearing away the brambles. My grandfather fought in the first war, and my father in the second war, he was actually in North Africa fighting against Rommel. You are an amazing young woman so caring about humanity. Well done Nicola, have a great week and I look forward to your next project.

Leave it - the sign, you have more viable signs yet to find. I love your opening scenes and music, I am sure I have not said that before!! lol I am currently looking forward to the closing.. I will hold off on this post until the VERY end! As I type you are on the TV screen with your round up! OH, you brought it home. oh dear! Those bullets, they have bad things to be released into your lovely river. Broad Arrow mark on them! They look so pretty all together and maybe a memorial could be done.. for peace on earth? Nice Remembrance about the World Wars. So many good people gone. Wonderful piece on Fredrick Jury, he must have a horrible time in the trenches. So nice of those fellows to help you, sweet of them. So glad you took the Crystal Palace pen nib - James Bond! How clever! Never pass up coins, exciting or not. My father spent time in England during the war as a RCAF pilot who was an instructor teaching RAF pilots to fly Mosquito aircraft. He enjoyed his time in England and found the people very friendly. Thank you for your appropriate ending.

It was so lovely of you to seek out Frederick Jury's grave and seek out help in clearing the overgrowth around it. I spend a lot of my spare time wandering around cemeteries and taking photos on behalf of people doing their family trees, and I've ended up making it a little mission of mine to photograph all the war graves I can find. Sometimes I just take the photo and move on, but I've definitelty become 'attached' to some of the people behind those photos and revisit their headstones frequently. Rewilding cemeteries is a wonderful idea, but it does make grave-hunting a little tricky at times!

I worked for 25 years in maintenance at a police service. One of my duties was picking up the spent brass casings from a firing range. I cringed a bit, when you poked around that ammo with your metal trowel. Haha! On another note, I live in Guelph Ontario Canada. It is the birthplace of Lt. Col. John McCrae. He was the Canadian army doctor who wrote the world famous poem In Flanders Fields. For a good number of years, I lived on Woolwich St.

I thought you might not take that sign but I lost because I guessed wrong. It was sad to see Fred's grave overgrown and my hat's off to those 2 heroes who cleared away the brambles for you. Kind of made me sad to see it like that and he would be happier now knowing it is cleared. Why not adopt Fred's grave? I doubt any family members remain and if I recall, Fred didn't have any children. This way, he is not forgotten and someone remembers him. Thank you for bringing him back to life as it were when you found his tag. Yes, the old gentleman with the cane and who placed the wreath was indeed one of the few remaining WW II veterans. Too far away to identify and specific medals but he seems to have 4 campaign stars, for sure 1939-45 Star, possibly Africa Star, Italy Star and the France and Germany Star and related Defence and Victory Medals. Too far to be absolutely certain but a good probability, could be a couple of others, again the distance. Thank you for a lovely video. Hugs and love from Canada.

Yes, had the same when mudlarking the local river - and suspect that that local police had disposed of a LARGE amount of .45 rounds - and they were all live - and not water soaked. Dangerous to say the least if they start to cap off - and start hitting each other and going off ... As long as the cartridge ingredients remain dry within the brass and ammo neck - they are viable products (no matter what 30-50 years of age !)

I want to think the ammo was from a Battle of Britain era submachine gun. Perhaps the very one Churchill was photographed with. 😎

Ammunition does not ‘cap off’ by by them hitting each other. They need a good sharp impact in the centre of the primer for them to discharge. Even then there is very little danger from them, not enough energy from a round going off to penetrate a cardboard box. A round needs to be in a gun to develope enough pressure to be dangerous.

I love the way you do a lot of research into finds when you can, so interesting to learn about them. Thank you for getting those chaps to clear away around those headstones, the flowers were a big gesture of remembering someone who fought for our freedom, sadly most of the veterans have no desendants to tend their graves anymore so you did well there Nicole. I hope the chaps clear more of that area as I suspect there are more headstones tucked away, if we read the names on them then we are showing respect in remembering them. Thank you for a lovely video. The 11th November has so much meaning for me. Both my grandad faught one in ww1 and the other in ww2, they both thankfully returned but both with injuries, one was shot through both legs and the other lost a lung due to mustard gas. We also lost family in both wars. Another good meaning of remembrance Day is on the 11th November 1963 my brother was born, I was five years old and adored him. Both myself and my husband served in the army so it does mean a lot to us. Thankfully we were not injured, but know folk who were. I think if we all look back at our families we will find connections to both wars. I thank all who didn't come home and all who did, we are a free nation because of them.

Nicola I am the weird guy who gets left outside at a house party so take my suggestion about the rusted corroded sign. Some things should stay on the foreshore but not this piece. I would get Si to help you build a frame with a back board and frame it as Art. It is Art you know. It says the past is the past and we cannot go back there again. So that is my thought. Finding and exposing that headstone is so humbling. That you found such an obscure little tag and in the year 2022 you uttered his name! I think there is power in that. You wield more power than you know young lady. You bring back the dead so that we can hold their names in our hearts and remember.
