"Rifles on the Danube" Kickstarter is live!
www.kickstarter.com/projects/...
Today I took my AMD-65 out to the range. I've shot regular AKMs with AMD muzzle brakes, but never had the chance to try the AMD-65 in its original proper configuration. And you know what? It's actually not bad, at least in short helpings. The brake is really concussive for people around the gun, but it's not bad at all for the shooter. The grip would get tiring after a while, but for just a bit of shooting it's not bad at all.
Thanks to Brandon Herrera / The AK Guy Inc for building this rifle for me!

Ian, the original magazine was 30 rounds for the army, the 20 rounds magazin was for the police, but their version's handles was somewhat blueish colored.

@@laszlokocsis7817Wrong. The original mag capacity was 20 rounds because the larger ones will make reloading a bit difficult with the position of the front grip handle (I just simply mounted my handle to a hole forward). The gun was mainly designed for military officers and paratroopers who needed something smaller and more manurable to operate. One other thing most forget to mention about this little Hungarian beast is that it's literally the first AK ever to be made from all steel construction

Back in the 80s, my father, as a Bulgarian army serviceman, took part in a convention, held in Hungary of the Warsaw Pact military small arms producers. There were competitive shootings conducted for all the primary assault rifles of the Europe's Eastern block. The best came up the Soviet AKM, followed by the German AKM. They all complained about the Bulgarian milled receiver AK, though my dad achieved with it the highest score on the range😊 And he told me about the concussion the AMD muzzle brake caused. And it also put the resting pillow on fire while they were shooting it prone.

Looks like the army started to get rid of them around that time, as we got AK-63Ds by the time I was in in 2002-3 at Tapolca. Sarge mentioned that they got rid of the old AMDs a year before, and "they were all shit". Never went into detail whether they were shit because they weren't full sized infantry rifles, or because they worn out due to constant use by not very enthusiastic conscripts. Granted, even the AK-63D s have been ranged from freshly taken out of original packaging that day(yep, our unit just had it's rifles replaced, straight outta boxes. oil flowed freely that day..) , to the ones, that have been dragged around by the guards company every other day for a 24 hour duty. (And guards company was a very "special" unit, full of very "special" people) Of course, by the 2000s, the Hungarian military have been cut down drastically, so there were quite a lot of guns in storage to cycle through, so it was a lot easier to get rid of the old AMDs for something better.

I purchased some 20 round Hungarian AK mags years ago and they are handy as a first magazine if you want a compact gun. I also owned a Century Arms Hungarian AK for a bit and while I purchased it new, the bolt look like it had seen thousands of rounds already as it probably started as a parts kit.

My father was conscript of the Hungarian Peoples Army (Magyar Néphadsereg) during the early '80s. He served as NCO at the mechanized infantry, their service rifle was the AMD-65. As an NCO he has opportunity to train with other types weapons also. He said that AMD-65 was a fine gun, but even the AK-63D (AMMSZ) was more comfortable to shoot. On the otherhand AMDs compactness was very useful generally, and especially when it was shot through the firing ports of a BMP.

Their old Swedish M40 in 8x63 also had a muzzle break. After that, there is no concussive blast they can't handle. Elbonia adopted the Hungarian AMD-65 after their first model paratrooper carbine failed to go into full production. The ventilated lower handguard reminded them of their trusty old ZB53 machine guns in cute handheld form, and the muzzle break made it sound like a mini ZB53.

In the book and movie “Royal Flash”, one of the characters (von Sternberg) has a “game” called “Hungarian Roulette” - same as Russian Roulette, but you don’t hold the gun to your head, but point it at your opponent’s head . Seeing the concussion and how much it hurts around the shooter, this could be the inspiration…. Not fatal, but , after a long day on the range, everyone in the squad certainly would have headaches

My AMD65 , & MADDI are my most favorite AK 's by far. There's no doubt the AMD break is way over the top when it comes to being loud & concussive for bystanders,, but man do they ever work well ! There worse that a F-16 breaking the sound barrier at tree top level, and that's no exaggeration !! Mine are slightly modified to have 4 extra 1/8th " holes on top which helps muzzle rise even more than the standard ones,, but no less loud though !

Always thought a forwards-angled front grip might be a good idea. If you ball your fore hand into a fist and then raise it to rifle height with minimul tension or stretching, that's where it ends up. Maybe a bit flatter than the AMD's in a ideal world (something like an upaide-down, back- to-front Bren carry handle), but the cost advantage of using the stock grip reversed was obviously too good to pass up on an el-cheapo gun.
@SpartanIVAlpha015
@SpartanIVAlpha015 2 ай бұрын
Also worth noting that the front grip is placed exactly far enough to give clearance for a standard 30 round AK magazine (Ian demonstrated this in the previous video). If it wasn't a reversed/forward slanted grip it likely wouldn't have the clearance without moving it up a bit further.

I had this gun like that when I was a soldier. I liked it, it was a good gun. I could even hit a machine gun formation at 350 yards (used 4 -5 bulets). It wasn't noisy when you were wearing your armored helmet. Because the earpiece on that one had good noise reduction. If you were more than 10 feet away, it was tolerable.

Hungarian here. I freaking ENVY you man. Because in 1995 when I did my mandatory service in the Hungarian Army, we were taken to the shooting range ONCE (after weeks of preparations during the training period) and got the "chance" to shoot NINE rounds. Yup only nine rounds AND we had to divide the shots to 3 single and 3 burst (2-2-2) shots. :D (Bang, bang, bang..... pause.... bang-bang, bang-bang, bang-bang.) It was over before we get the feel of it, only to get some ringing in our ears because we did not get proper earplugs but cotton balls. :D 1 year of service and no more shooting range for us. :( And the stock is bad indeed.

Ian "I can see the usefulness of this, if I were in a stack or something..." All I could think was, Firing that gun inside any structure, would be like holding a flash bang while it went off, multiple times. Standing next to someone while they shot it inside a building, would be like getting punched by a heavyweight boxer. So clearing a building with it would be like getting punched by a heavyweight boxer, while holding a flash bang that's going off multiple times.

Ya I have a similar styled break on my regular 16-inch barreled AK and everyone already hates standing anywhere in the vicinity of it. I can't imagine how bad this one is with a short barrel too.

This was my first AK I ever bought, it was a parts kit gun from classic firearms and I think ran me like $450, it was the cheapest ak you could buy at the time. The only issue I have with it is if you’re running it at the range all day that sheet metal forend turns into a nice grill for your fingers lmao

Heh well they do say the effectiveness of a muzzle brake is proportional to how much it sucks for people standing next to you.

In this video, Ian fired more rounds than Hungarian conscripts during their entire military service. The front grip really is indeed awkward, but it's really comfortable in a prone shooting position.
