Only the youngest one of the poor man’s three sons can protect the grapes because he gave food to the frog. The frog repays his help with three magic horses. These horses help the boy to win the princess’ hand.
Made by the Kecskemét Film Studio.
Directed by: Marcell Jankovics, Mária Horváth
Storyteller: Gyula Szabó
Music: Kaláka band
The makers used the decorative art of a certain countryside region at each episode. The trio of folk art, folk music and folk tales are masterfully combined in the episodes, which have unique imagery, sometimes spicy folk humor in the dialogues. Thanks to the natural presentation of the storytellers, and the music of the Kaláka band, the viewer can experience something unique and special.

For folks mentioning how similar this is to The Simple Prince, you're absolutely right. The way I understand it, these sorts of variations from from regions, much like how German fairytales are similar in all but names/elements of the tale. In one section of Hungary, for example, a vineyard might have been more common than hayfields, thus, the change. Cultural significance for a region or small territory also would explain why it was rosemary, an apple etc and not a single slipper--or it may just be word of mouth and a story changing hands turning to suit the teller who may have said 'Eh, I don't like this tree thing but what if it was a glass mountain with a gold slipper?' Folk tales are wonderful, aren't they?

I have also noticed very specific themes in these Hungarian tales: potentially lethal sibling rivalry is common, beautiful women are currency, youth is highly valued, animals are anapamorphised, food security is a serious concern, and kingdoms are as common as towns! 😊 I love looking at folktales from various cultures and seeing the differences in the writing style, themes, and contextual meanings! It is interesting how different the folktales are in countries that colonize others vs countries that are/were colonized.

@renomiz2373
@renomiz2373 6 ай бұрын
Kinda? Folk lore depends on well, the folk. As the story is told it changes over time so in different regions you get different stories that are similar. I might be making this completely up but most folk lore were probably during a time before reading or writing was common so it pretty much could only be told to you which is why some stay relatively the same like this one but then you get things like the seven ravens and snow white which probably were the same story but have drastically been changed over time but keep many similarities.

Animals are symbolic of course. Also they are pretty entertaining now. So I imagine they were even more entertaining back in the day.

Most people in central and eastern Europe have brown or black hair with varying eye colors. To be blond is/was originally seen as sinful, women using it to ensnare men. Later, blond to red hair was seen as pure and virgin. Thus, many protagonists were pale.

Possibly, because each was collected from different storytellers maybe even from different regions in Hungary that's why you see the same patterns with only minor differences. And another point to add, these stories never represent the level of real life. The king doesn't represent the highest ranked in feudal society but the level with the highest knowledge of life ( but i think that was obvious of talking to animals and such)

it's just common in visual adaptations, because blonde hair color is often seen as a symbol of purity in western culture. most folk tales don't describe their character's appearence, sometimes just mentioning some details or simply describing characters as "really ugly" or "heavenly beautiful".

Just once I'd like to see all three brothers be kind-hearted. Which is more likely, considering how loving parents generally produce loving children, and unloving parents produce cruel children.
