When the GySEV/Raaberbahn was built, it was nearly completely in Hungary (only Ebenfurt was a border town in Lower Austria) when it was a part of Austria-Hungary. After WWI a part of Western Hungary was transferred to Austria, so suddenly the GySEV/Raaberbahn was situated in two different countries.

Also worth noting is that GySEV continuously kept operating cross-border services even during the cold war. Despite communism it continued to be a semi-private company as to not lose access to the Austrian rail network.

I join to the group of Hungarians who highly appreciate your great effort to pronounce our words quite well! Your train videos are absolutely great and informative and I simply love them. And the fact that you managed to say our difficult names (in almost every case) right makes them more trustworthy-you really care what you give! Thank you!!!

Pronounciation is a good attempt. Sopron is also called Civitas Fidelissima as the majority voted to stay in Hungary after the border arrangements of the Trianon Treaty (that is conculding the end of WWI from the part of Hungary)

Honestly speaking, trains in the western part of Hungary are simply unbeatable. Very good track conditions. But if you go towards Szolnok... that is a real pain in the @ss. That is an international main line, but trains at some points rarely go faster than 40 kph due to the sickening tracks.

You should! The rail system may not be Dutch or Swiss quality but it is definitely well polished and improving by the day! In addition the country has loads of buses interconnecting far reaches of the country not served by rail. So travelling around is really easy!

GYSEV Flirts are really nice way of commuting. I am a local in Western Hungary. I take the train from Fertőszentmiklós (which is also a junction, trains departs from here to Neusiedler am See and some direct ones to Vienna) to Csorna and Sopron, you can't beat the train. The track is 120 km/h in the most part. If you want to experience some retro fashion you should also try the old Austrian DMU-s in GYSEV livery in Szombathely to Kőszeg. A weak point in GYSEV operation is the Raabercity branded nightmare ex-OBB intercity coaches, try to avoid those. I enjoy your videos keep up the good work

Amazing video! As a Hungarian/Canadian railfan, this video contained a lot of amazing information! I’ve never actually been on GySEV but I would love to some day as I discover the western regions of the country. I appreciate your attempt at pronouncing the location names as they are pronounced instead of just blatantly butchering them. I also would love to add some cool quick facts. Sopron is often touted as the most patriotic city in Hungary, as after the signing of the Treaty of Trianon (the devising of the Hungarian empire to other surrounding nations) Sopron was given the choice to either join Austria or remain apart of Hungary. And they chose the later. The narrow gauge railway is one of 26 narrow gauge railways currently operating in Hungary! There used to be many more historically including some that spans impressive distances. Many of these railways started out as mining and forestry railways however are now mainly tourist attractions and museums, although historically some were also used for passenger transport as well!

Good video - actually the name Csorna means black only in slavic laguages, but not in Hungarian. There are multiple theories on the origins of the name, one of them is that it comes from the slavic "Black" others are different, but anyway the name was first mentioned in writing back in 1226.
